Safety Ken Hamlin says he is going to Cincy to visit Bengals

Recommended Posts

I was gonna make a thread after the draft since we didnt nab a FS we should bring Hamlin in for a look, if for nothing else but to improve depth. He has not got alot of action since being released and would be like a Tank Johnson deal of last year 1 yr deal to provide depth and stability for a cheap contract. Dallas fans seem to treat him like Roy most were not unhappy he was cut but they were also considering the amt of money he was making. For close to the vet min he would be a pretty good pick up. Cant blame Dallas for not wanting to pay that much for him, apparantly they blame him for a couple of big plays from last year just like when we grabbed Roy. Sign Hamlin and we are looking pretty strong throughout the roster. Still a lil weak in the interior of the Oline but overall one of the best rosters in the league.

Ken Hamlin, a free safety who has started 96 NFL games, has tweeted he's visiting Cincinnati with the Bengals look for some depth that they didn't get in the draft.

Hamlin, 29, started 12 games for the Cowboys last season but Dallas wasn't looking to pay him the $5.6 million he had due this upcoming season. He had started every game for three straight seasons before a high ankle sprain took him out of four games last year.

A second-round draft pick of Seattle in 2003, Hamlin joined the Cowboys in '06 and when he came up with a career-high five interceptions the next season they have him a big deal. In that '07 season he teamed with Bengals starting strong safety Roy Williams, but Hamlin has had just one pick since Williams left.

The Bengals are looking for a backup to join Chinedum Ndukwe behind Williams and free safety Chris Crocker.

The Dallas Morning News reports that the Cowboys guaranteed Hamlin about $1 million of the $5.6 and that they'll pay him the difference of his salary if there is a gap.

Mike Florio says 2 teams, other than the Saints,
are reportedly interested in Darren Sharper.

Could the Bengals be one of those teams?

I doubt it...what are you gonna do bench one of your biggest defensive leaders (Crocker)? Or shift Crock to SS and have Chinny and Roy be the backups and if something happened to sharper switching Crock back? I guess thats possible.

Number 41 is Duke. Probably his host who picked him up at the airport or something would be my guess...

Joe Reedy said on twitter the #41 Hamlin was referring to is Safety C.C. Brown,
who also visited the Bengals today.

Yeah. Noticed that on his tweet. Didn't even realize when Hamlin said he and "41" were on their way that he meant Brown.

crocker is 50/50 each game on if he is going to play good or suck. Roy cant be trusted to stay healthy, Ndukwe seems to get worse and worse each year. Nelson shouldnt be on an NFL roster and Hebert is pretty much strictly STs. Even though Hamlin has some injury issues i think he would be a good pickup. The competition would help Crocker and maybe he can become more consistent and then you hope Roy + Hamlin can at least combine to play a full season and hope Ndukwe improves instead of regressing.

Hamlin starting his free agent tour
8:25AM ET

After spending nearly a month deciding on his next steps, free agent safety Ken Hamlin is embarking on a free agent visitation tour, beginning with the Cincinnati Bengals, per Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Hamlin's skills seem to have already crested, as he has just one interception in the last two seasons, and hasn't been the playmaker that Jerry Jones thought he was getting when he signed him to a $39 million deal following the 2007 campaign.Looking back over our previous speculation, some other teams that could show some interest based on need are the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Please back that statement up with something.

Ndukwe is elite against the run. And he had as many pass defenses as Ed Reed,
and had more sacks, while starting as many games. I know, I know. Ed Reed was
injured and blah blah blah. Fact is, Ndukwe started 12 games on a top 5 Defense.

He is not as horrible as you try to make him out to be. He is a good player
that adds great depth at the position.

He will visit with Cincinnati Wednesday after being released by the Cowboys earlier this month. The Cowboys released Hamlin and Flozell Adams on April 2. The Cowboys are on the hook for around $1.1 million of guaranteed money that was left on Hamlin's contract. If he earns more than that with a new team, the Cowboys would not owe him anything.

If he signs with Cincinnati, then he would be re-joined with Roy Williams - as well as Tank Johnson. While playing next to Williams in 2007, Hamlin intercepted five passes and was named to the Pro Bowl, leading to a $39 million extension the next year.

In 2008-09, he intercepted one pass, but the Cowboys coaches liked his ability to keep the peace in the secondary by getting everybody lined up. Due to make $5.596 million this year, the Cowboys decided they wanted more playmaking at such a high cost.

You can link the vast improvement in run defense to Ndukwe and Crocker. They are quality not trash.

I'd take them over Dexter, KK, Madieu. All 3 of those guys started for other NFL team. It's foolish to cut down the current Bengal safeties at a time the defense is playing good football.

I agree, especially about Crocker.

I don't think Bengals fan appreciate Tank, Dhani and Crocker as much as they should because of the way they were acquired and because they aren't flashy guys. Those guys have turned the middle of our defense from a huge weakness to as strength and they don't get any credit because they were inexpensive free agents.

I've seen Tank getting some love. However, I definitely think that Dhani and Crocker are way underrated by the fans in general.

I didn't understand the panic about not drafting a safety. First, we are not as awful there as everyone was saying, with Williams, Crocker and Chinny. Second, it's probably the easiest position to fill in free agency. Third, it's probably easier to cover a lack of talent at safety than it is at any other position.

That said the other safety was KK and that team went to the playoffs largely off 44 TOs produced by the defense.

He was not good but he was a last week addition and both preseason starting safeties went down early in that year.

I do think the next step for this current defense is to force more TOs.

Sharper meeting with Jags; Dolphins, Cowboys could be next

Free agent Darren Sharper is visiting the Jaguars on Wednesday, according to a league source, with more visits to other teams likely following.

Interest in the Pro Bowl safety has increased post-draft, and, despite recovering from an offseason knee surgery, he has begun making visits.

In addition to Jacksonville, Miami and Dallas are possibilities as well. The Redskins could also use a free safety, with LaRon Landry playing more on the strong side now.
