Let's recap the Bengals passing game from last season:

Chad Ochocinco.

Let's talk about what "weapons'' were available to Carson Palmer's right arm in the fall of 2009:

Chad Ochocinco.

To review: What was noteworthy about Cincinnati's air game last year?

Chad Ochocinco.

You might not like Planet Ocho's act. (Which is different from not liking Planet Ocho himself. He is impossible to dislike.) But without him last fall, Palmer's right arm was as useful as wings on a frog. There was no passing game last year without Chad Ochocinco. And yet we persist in wondering about Carson Palmer.

He's not the same since (pick 1): The knee, the elbow, the high ankle sprain, the left thumb. If you're not in that camp, you're in this one: Palmer had no weapons. It has been the biggest local chicken-and-egg topic since Kimo vonAxeMurderer did the knee job in January 2006.

Memories are short. Attention spans are shorter. As the Bengals won seven of their first nine, we praised Number Nine's lack of turnovers and his clockwork ability to win games late. During the 3-5 finish, including the playoff loss, we suggested the Bengals should consider drafting a quarterback.

Now that the team has added rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham and veteran wideout Antonio Bryant, the pack agrees: Time for Nine to show us what he's got.

Nine doesn't run with the pack. "It's not something that keeps me up at night,'' Palmer said.

The Bengals last year evolved into a defensive team, partly owing to the will, leadership and talents of Mike Zimmer, and partly because their once-feared offense was living on its rep. In no special order, here's what occurred with the offense last year: (1) Laveranues Coles couldn't get open; (2) tight ends excelled at dropping passes; (3) Andre Caldwell didn't develop and Jerome Simpson was nonexistent; (4) the revamped line was better at run blocking than protecting Palmer; (5) Chris Henry wasn't used enough before his death; and (6) See No. 1.

The offense withdrew as the season progressed. The Bengals used three tackles. It could be a little difficult, as a receiver, to get open when your team plays three tackles. Not a lot of respect for Dennis Roland down the middle, you know?

That left Palmer-to-Chad, a very good combination that lacked the trust and reliability of Palmer-to-Houshmandzadeh. Also, other than Brian Leonard, no running backs were asked to catch. And with the bad thumb, Palmer's ability to playfake was zero.

Other than that, the passing game was devastating.

That's not making excuses for the QB, or to suggest he had no role in the boredom that occurred on that side of the ball. And there is reason to believe this will be a telling season for Palmer, a year ago considered by most experts to be an "elite'' NFL quarterback.

It's to say that Palmer is armed and dangerous again. Not to the level of 2005. The cast isn't that impressive. But he's not going to a knife fight with a Popsicle stick anymore. "We needed the emergence of some people,'' Marvin Lewis noted, without adding, "that didn't emerge.''

"We went down a notch,'' Lewis said. The experts call it the "vertical passing game.'' The Bengals went horizon to horizon.

Now, Palmer says his arm is "stronger than ever'' because of all the exercises he did to strengthen the elbow. He says Bryant is "a real threat inside'' the way Houshmandzadeh was. "He's a guy you can throw screens to. He can break a tackle, he can block anybody in the run game. You can put him on the outside and have him run a fade.''

Bengals need Palmer to rebound to contend
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on May 11, 2010 6:20 PM ET

By the end of last season, the Bengals passing attack was almost unrecognizable.

It was dinks, dunks, and Chad Ochocinco. When Darrelle Revis arrived to take away 85, there was almost nothing left.

The Bengals have made noise this offseason for their reclamation projects, but Paul Daughtery of the Cincinnati Enquirer points out in a great piece on Tuesday that Carson Palmer's arm is the real Bengals story to follow in 2010.

Something didn't seem right with Palmer's wing by the end of last season. The admitted member of PFT Planet insists his arm is "stronger than ever'' after exercises to strengthen his troublesome elbow. It looked otherwise late last year.

This was a guy five years ago that looked just a notch below Manning and Brady. Now, no one seems totally confident where the rest of Palmer's career will go.

He wasn't played with a full deck last year, but the additions of Antonio Bryant, Jordan Shipley, and Jermaine Gresham at tight end should help.

If the Bengals can improve their below average passing game from a year ago, they have a chance to surprise people. Again.

Didn't use Chris Henry enough . . . CHECK.

Chad was the only Reliable . > . CHECK.

Sorely missed Hoosh . . . CHECK.

The TightEnds Stank . . . CHECK.

Leonard was the only Back who caught a pass (seemingly) . . . CHECK.

Line has issues with giving Palmer time . . . to find everyone covered and chad doubled . . . CHECK.

Late in the Season (for whatever reason) Palmer had some accuracy issues . . . CHECK.

How to fix?

Get your Ultimate Weapon (B.Scott) the ball more out in space. . . . Pending.

Draft a sweet Tight End and put his skills in the Gameplan . . . Check and Pending.

Sign a sweet veteran wideout who could be a 1 . . . Check.

Shore up the line by having your numberone DOMINTATOR PUMMEL FOOLS ALL SEASON, add depth in the draft, and resign BOBBIE!!! . . . CHECK.

Draft some - and sign some talent to light a fire in the Recieving Corps . . . CHECK.

Shit can Bob . . .
Welp the last part doesn't matter now though because this team (ahem barring injury), with the magnitude of assembled talent, could beat all comers with Katie B. phoning in plays from tahiti.

WHOOOT. :locomotive: WHOOT.

I think we might have more talent at WR and TE this year.

The 05 line was pretty spectacular. Levi Jones. Steinbach. Braham. Bobbie. Willie.

C.J. Hoosh. Slim.

Rudi and Chris Perry.

Damn shame what happened to Carson in the Playoff game I think they had the Stuff, at least on offense, to go deep in the Playoffs.
They could have whooped the Seahawks.

Now it appears the Defense is Star Studded, and the Offense could be getting there. As I look at the team me and Marvin like what we see.

In 2005 they had a great OL season. Got very good seasons out of 1-3 wrs.

I don't think those groups this season are as good. I think they are much better in the backfield and TE could be a major up swing when compared to 05.

TE? Absolutely. WR? Close, but not more. Unless you mean more WRs with some talent. Chad's still very good, but I doubt he will be what he was in 2005. Bryant should be a huge upgrade over Coles, but better than TJ? Maybe, but I doubt it. Matt Jones is the closest we will have to Henry, but he's not there. Shipley and Briscoe will give us 2 more options, but, at least until they learn the offense, and click with Carson, I wouldn't expect a whole lot early this year, if at all this year. Hopefully Caldwell takes the next step in his development this year.

I agree. Also our O-line will be better tha last year, but still not as good as '05.

Plus, so many people only remember the shell of Chris Perry that played here in '08. They forget that when he was healthy in '05 he was a major part of our offense.

Memories are short. Attention spans are shorter. As the Bengals won seven of their first nine, we praised Number Nine's lack of turnovers and his clockwork ability to win games late. During the 3-5 finish, including the playoff loss, we suggested the Bengals should consider drafting a quarterback.
You can draw a line right through the middle of the season at the point we lost Henry. At the time I argued that he wouldn't be missed that much, but I have rarely been so wrong about anything.

In the first 8 games Carson faced 4 teams that finished in the top 8 in the league in passer rating defense, and 6 of the 8 finished in the top half of the league. Despite that tough competition he was still on a pace to finish among the top 5 in the league in tds (28) and in the top 12 in passer rating (89.5) and yards (3664). We were also leading the league in td percentage in the red zone.

Over the last 8 games Carson only faced one team that finished in the top half of the league in passer rating defense. Despite the much weaker competition his numbers were among the worst in the league. His tds dropped by half from the first half of the season (14 to 7). His yards per game dropped by 30% (from 229 to 158). And his passer rating dropped considerably (89.5 to 76.2). Considering the weak pass defenses that he was facing his numbers over the second half were close to the worst in the league, and we were helpless in the red zone.

yea,... carson better not get sacked the second most times in his career while having the second fewest pass attempts in his career again...

PS: line was juuust fiiiiine...

And this was without even attempting to throw the ball down field (except on a flea-flicker).

No O-line should give up many sacks when the QB never takes more than a 3-step drop.

Then we are in real trouble this year. Same LT, LGs, C, & RG that started last season. The only difference will be Andre at RT full time. Hope that is enough.

Agreed on the O-line. But I expect Bernard Scott to become a much bigger part of the offense this year, and at least in the receiving end I expect him to make us forget Perry very quickly.

I think having "The same at..." makes it better. Continuity is an important part of an O-line. And as I saw it, RT was our biggest problem last year. if Andre does lock down RT, the O-line should be a good deal better.

I think having "The same at..." makes it better. Continuity is an important part of an O-line. And as I saw it, RT was our biggest problem last year. if Andre does lock down RT, the O-line should be a good deal better.

I think and hope you are right. I trust that the coaches were comfortable with who they had on the oline or they would have done something about it. Just pointing out that we could have the same problems again this year, without improved play, because little has changed.
