See everyone doubted me when I thought they brought in a stunt double for Andre when Solomon Wilcots did his NFL Network visit. He didn't look anything near 370 and that was what a month ago?

I don't know about you, but I'm beginning to worry about Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Andre Smith.

And worrying about Smith means I'm worrying about the offensive line.

Smith was expected to seize the starting job at right tackle, but February surgery that required the insertion of a pin in his fractured left foot has landed him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP)/active list.

In other words, Smith didn't pass his physical and won't practice until team doctors clear him. That could take a while.

Bengals fans should not be shocked if Smith lands on the PUP/reserve list on Cutdown Day, meaning he'll be sidelined for at least the first six games of the regular season.

"Andre stays on the progression of the doctor, and he wasn't cleared for contact yet, so we're able to do this and work with him and get his conditioning the way it should be," head coach Marvin Lewis said.

"I imagine he'll probably be (out) two or three weeks – we'll see. But if not, then we have the right to put him on the (reserve) PUP and bring him in during the season. So we'll see how that goes with the foot and the entire thing."

lots of freaking out about Andre.

Yes it really sucks he's not out there right now, but it is what it is. Marvin's saying 2-3 weeks, Andre's saying he plans on being in the last two preseason games. If that's true, he's still the opening day starter at RT trucking fools.

His weight was an issue at Alabama and he was dominant. He was dominant when he played last season too.

Frankly, I'm happy that the word is its more an issue of stamina and conditioning. than the foot. The foot keeps you out of games, stamina only keeps you out of a handful of plays per game.
that's a very good point. the foot is much more of an issue than the weight.

just for the sake of comparison, when andre signed his contract last year he weighed 364.
:39: ...so at this rate, ...next year he'll show up weighing 376.

They are both an issue and one that affects the other. The OP of this thread was a quote from Willie. He knows better than anyone about a foot issue on a big man.

Guys, Tits will either be ready to play or he won't. If he can't, Roland will step up. We went 10-6 and sweep the division without his fat ass last year, and we appear to have better depth EVERYWHERE this year. Something tells me that Chip is owning the fat boy right about now.

I also bet Roland is buying that mother Bags of Double Cheeseburgers every night!! :D :D

I thought he couldn't work out because of the foot.

Yeah, this whole Andre situation is not a doomsday scenario. While its frustrating, its not like the ONLY reason we couldn't throw the ball down field last year was because our RT would get Palmer killed if we tried. Getting Reggie back into the mix, upgrading Carson's weapons and bringing back an OL that is AT LEAST as good as last year should result in an improved passing game.

So long as Andre's foot can eventually heal, the conditioning thing is really only an aggravation. Little too early for everyone to throw their hands up in the air a cry "bust!"

i disagree. guys that big can shed 20 lbs in no time. hell, they probably take 5 lb dumps. it wouldn't surprise me to see him play at 340-345. ideally, at some point, he gets back down to that 330 level where he feels he's most effective.

Doesn't he have to be able to work out first to lose all that weight?

Water tanks, elipticals, stationary bikes. There is plenty the big guy can do to shed pounds while taking it easy on his foot.

exactly, you have to believe his lifestyle will change dramatically from whatever he was doing pre-training camp.

I could show him how to lose 15-20 lbs in a week with no exercise, good food (6 meals a day), and plenty of water. He'd have to commit to it and I doubt he has it in him. I'm certain he'd cheat the diet

I've helped coach guys like him through the diet, ...I wouldn't waste my time with this guy.

fwiw, its very hard to predict the weight of guys that big just by looking at them from the stands. After awhile the weight just packs in around organs. He very well could be 370, but he probably looks the same at 370 as he does at 350.

yep. he wasn't in great shape in college and dominated some of the best DE's in the college game. The weight doesn't worry me much.

The most concerning element of the Andre saga to me is the fact that he seems listless and unmotivated to make this right. We think he can be a pretty good RT and solidify a pretty good existing OLine. But the guy can't even PRACTICE b/c he doesn't seem to have an ounce of determination or sheer will in him. He has always skated by on sheer ability and little else. If a work ethic could be worked into him the sky seems to be the limit. But you wonder when or maybe now IF, that light will ever come on for him.

I'm not going to start caring about this guy until he shows some interest in his own career.
