Cincinnati Bengals schedule analysis
April, 19, 2011

By James Walker

Breakdown: The Cincinnati Bengals will try to rebound from last year's disappointing 4-12 season. Last year they proved they couldn't handle a first-place schedule. But this year's slate is more manageable.

Cincinnati has the NFL's 27th-ranked strength of schedule but has to overcome its inner turmoil this offseason. The Bengals have had several changes on the coaching staff, a franchise quarterback who has threatened to retire and expected turnover on the roster to in an effort to go younger in a rebuilding effort.

The Bengals are at least a couple years away from competing in the AFC North again, especially with quarterback Carson Palmer's future uncertain. But a relative easy schedule compared to last year should help. The Bengals have a chance to get off to a good start in Week 1 against another rebuilding team in the Cleveland Browns. One of the Ohio teams will be 1-0 after the first week.

Complaint department: It's odd that Cincinnati will play five division games in the second half of the season. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing for the Bengals. The only AFC North matchup in the first eight weeks for Cincinnati will be at Cleveland on Sept. 11.

The what-if game: Bengals owner Mike Brown has been steadfast in saying he will not trade Palmer, and based on Brown's history, there is a good chance he won't budge. But let's imagine for a second the Bengals do have a change of heart and decide to trade Palmer. There would several potential trade partners and opportunities for Palmer to play against his then-former team this season. Teams with quarterback questions like the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans are all on Cincinnati's 2011 schedule. If Palmer was moved to any of those teams, that would present an interesting grudge match between Palmer and the Bengals.

Honestly I wouldn't be bothered at all if we played every game at 1pm on Sunday every year.

I like my regular routine.

Why are the Bengals a couple of years away? They just swept the division a year ago.
I would argue they will have more talent than that team did. And they lost 8 games by
a TD or less last season. Which was against the toughest schedule in the NFL.

So Carson might not be here? He didn't exactly set the World on fire the past few seasons.

Wrong 2008 against the Jags was our 1st win of that season. I remember it well, I was cleaning my Garage. :)

There are only a handful of teams that can go 4-12 and get national games the following season. The Bengals are not among that handful.

The down side to that is that if the team has tanked, having three home games at the end of the season won't be a good thing.
