Bengals FA Interest and Dealings

Every morning, grab a cup of coffee and get your AFC North wake-up call here:

Another day in free agency means another day to count the losses in the division.

On Thursday, the second day of free agency, the AFC North parted ways with four more players (including three starters): Ravens guard Ben Grubbs, Browns safety Mike Adams, Bengals guard Mike McGlynn and Browns backup offensive tackle Artis Hicks.

To update our free-agent scorecard, division teams have watched nine players sign with other teams while adding just one from another team (that would be defensive end Frostee Rucker going from the Bengals to the Browns).

These numbers look bad on paper, but I'm not preaching the end of the AFC North as we know it. Most of these losses were expected and will amount to a dent in the fender. Teams probably didn't even give a wave goodbye to the likes of Adams and McGlynn.

The Browns have been the most proactive team in the division, but most of their signings have been re-signings. Now it's time for the rest of the AFC North to start going on the offensive here. Let's see the Ravens sign Evan Mathis to replace Grubbs today. Let's see the Bengals add some depth at cornerback by agreeing to terms with Tracy Porter or Aaron Ross.

Just do something.

BENGALS: McGlynn, who started the final three weeks in the regular season as well as the playoff game, posted on Twitter that he agreed on a deal to join the Indianapolis Colts. He was pushed into the starting lineup for the Bengals after Bobbie Williams broke his ankle. ... The team hosted four players for visits, all of which will extend into today: cornerbacks Tracy Porter (Saints) and Aaron Ross (Giants); defensive lineman Kendall Langford (Dolphins); and guard Jacob Bell (Rams). The best bet is for the Bengals to sign Langford and a cornerback today. Porter might have the edge over Ross because the former second-round pick is younger (25 years old). ... According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the free-agent visits for both running backs (BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Michael Bush) will now occur Monday. ... Left guard Nate Livings visited the Cowboys on Thursday.

Scouts Inc. scouting report from 2008 draft

Strengths: Anticipates snap well, can locate the ball carrier quickly and flashes the ability to make plays in the backfield. Active feet and makes it difficult for blockers to sustain. Works hard, takes sound angles to the ball and can make plays in pursuit. Wraps up upon contact, generally brings the ball carrier down when gets hands on him and flashes the ability to deliver the big hit. Has a quick first step and shows adequate not great closing speed when gets a clear path to the quarterback. Flashes an effective rip move and is a relentless pass rusher. Moves well laterally and runs line stunts well.

Weaknesses: Undersized and isn't tall enough to add substantial bulk to frame. Tough and physical but gets engulfed by double teams and lacks ideal lower body strength. Doesn't use hands well and is far more effective attacking gap than occupying blockers. Lunges at times, ducks head at times and loses balance far too much. Can be overaggressive and gets caught too far upfield at times. Doesn't show great body control in space and has some problems making plays in the open field. Has yet to develop effective double moves and doesn't always force blockers to move their feet. Drives legs once in position but doesn't have great lower body strength and isn't a great bull rusher. Slowed by ankle and hamstring injuries in 2006, he missed three games with an elbow injury last year and his lack of size raises questions about his ability to stay healthy over the course of a 16-game season.

ESPN
Fluellen is a solid athlete with good functional strength for an interior defender. He has improved his ability to restrict run lanes with active hands and proper pad level. He has decent range outside the tackle box. He can push the pocket at times but has not developed his overall pass-rush package to be a consistent contributor in this phase of the game. Fluellen provides valuable depth but might be too one-dimensional to challenge for a starting role.

Oooooh

Andre Fluellen. Never heard of him either. Anyone know anything?

Drafted in 3rd round (#87) of 2008 draft by Detroit Lions. College: Florida State.

He's pretty underrated. Is a DE/DT hybrid weighing about 6-4 285 (same as Fanene). Would fit the Bengals rotation perfectly as a pass-rusher occupy blockers type guy. Good athletcism and quickness, and explosion off the snap. Is alot like Fanene in that he's a hard worker. Main concern here is his durability, with achilles and ankle injuries in the past.

So they all leave without signing? WTF? I think people around here know I'm not an alarmist, and more patient than most, but this is starting to bother me.

It is strange. You would think there would already be a loose understanding / agreement on the numbers from both sides before one would even visit. Things that make you go hmmmmm

I hate confirmed completed visits without a contract being signed.

Just thought I would throw that out there ....
