I know how Peter King could lose 30 pounds of ugly fat real quick.

Cut off his head.

Bengals' rookies to take the field

Sessions will acclimate them to team's ways

For most of the players who take part in this weekend’s Bengals rookie minicamp, the five practices over the next three days will serve as an orientation for how the team does things.

The draft picks, undrafted free agents and tryout players reported to Paul Brown Stadium on Thursday for meetings before hitting the field today.

“It’s everything. It’s an introduction to how we do things and then they’ll be able to get into the swing of offense and defense. OTAs will be their second,” head coach Marvin Lewis said.

Indiana State receiver Justin Hilton, who is one of the 15 undrafted free agents who were signed by the team, was eager to get the playbook and hit the ground running.

“I just want to get in the flow of how they practice and get into the routine,” he said. “I just want to get to the point on the field where I won’t be thinking all the time.”

Two of the 10 draft picks are under contract as a pair of fifth-round picks – safety George Iloka and cornerback Shaun Prater – were completed on Thursday. More could be wrapped up over the weekend.

Here are three things that we will be keeping an eye on during the weekend:

• How do the receivers fare?

Besides it being the first look at Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones in stripes, it could also be our first chance to see how much progress Armon Binns and Vidal Hazelton have made. The two former UC standouts are eligible to participate this weekend since they are still classified as first-year players.

During the offseason, Lewis has talked about Binns possibly being in the mix for the second receiver spot opposite A.J. Green. Over the past couple of weeks many have given the edge to Sanu, who was taken in the third round, because he can play both inside and outside and is that short to medium option that they lacked last year.

If one of these guys can emerge as a clear favorite for the second spot, it might mean they don’t have to go out and get a veteran. There has been increasing talk over the past week that there is an interest in Braylon Edwards, but that is possibly a month away since Edwards continues to rehab from a knee injury suffered last year.

• Can Pike earn a spot?

Former Reading and UC standout Tony Pike is one of a number of players who are participating on a tryout basis. The roster is currently at 87, which is three under the 90-player limit. They traditionally sign one or two of the tryout guys.

Pike was selected in the sixth round by the Panthers in 2010. Had he not made the final roster the Bengals would have put in a waiver claim for him. With a new coaching staff and an elbow injury, Pike was released by Carolina last year and did not sign with another team.

“Tony’s got ability and he got in a logjam in Carolina. He had a senior year where he had ups and downs due to injury. And he had some injuries of his own there,” said Lewis of Pike. “Hopefully he’s had an opportunity to get healthy now.”

• Burfict’s chance

From a national standpoint, the story of the weekend might be linebacker Vontaze Burfict. Once thought to be a first- or second-round pick when last season began, Burfict plummeted down draft boards after a rocky junior season and bad results at the combine and Arizona State’s pro day.

The one NFL coach who Burfict was impressed with was Lewis. After his pro day, Burfict called Lewis and also wrote him a letter asking for a chance.

Lewis compared Burfict’s situation to Ahmad Brooks, who was a supplemental draft pick in 2006, but noted that Brooks played better at Virginia but had more off-field issues.

“There’s no down side. What’s the down side?” Lewis said. “The positives are: Get in shape. You weren’t in shape your last season at Arizona State. Get rid of the selfishness in your play. Learn how to bend your knees. Let us coach you and let’s see if you are what people thought you could have been. Because I have no idea who you are. And so you’re starting from scratch here.”

The articles that were posted about Burflict makes me feel better about the move. He seems grateful and looks like he can turn things around. But as somebody suggested, is he the next Odell? Even if he turns things around now, will he revert back to his recent behavior. I don't see this to be as low risk as a lot of people here. I hope Marvin knows what he's doing.

what's the risk? Also, keep in mind that, unlike Odell, Burfict has no history of drug or alcohol problems.

He's far more like Ahmed Brooks, where undisciplined play is their issue.

not other than bad PR. He's not a draft pick, and he's not guaranteed a spot. He's not slated to start anytime soon, will have to make his name on special teams, and as an undrafted rookie he has absolutely no voice in the locker room. Never been arrested, never been in any kind of legal trouble. His issues are maturity and playing disciplined football.

If he doesn't work out, he gets cut in camp. If he DOES work out, you have a first round caliber talent under contract for the next 3 years.

What exactly is the risk?

I don't really.

In short: This is the way the NFL system works. Kids drop because of talent or lack of. Burfict dropped because of attitude. It's done. Now everyone of those kids has a chance to earn and disprove the reasons that made them UDFA. I see no risk in that at all. IMO, just because we are more familiar with Burfict's case doesn't make it anymore risky.

I also think the focus on off the field stuff to this degree is an example the NFL discipline policy working against itself. Burfict's has already paid the price. He's lost money he'll never ever get back. I don't understand him being a point of emphasis by the media.

Curious if those weights are their official weights as of today. Burfict at 248 - which means he hasn't lost anymore than his last reported. Of course, he had a ton of fat to lose and old muscle comes back quickly, so...

Also, interesting to note that BOTH of our UDFA Tackles were cut. Not a lot of Training camp depth there...

doesn't really need to be other than someone to push Roland. The top 3 guys are set, and both Wharton and Boling can play tackle in a pinch.

Push Roland, sure. Which would be a good thing. Also, call me a dreamer, but I would rather find a diamond in the rough to develop for a possible backup next season than have to use a draft pick (which is always early to get quality at T).

well, if they want they now have 4 more open spots to find a vet or a rook.

Anybody have a list of all the invitees? I've seen an invitee listed here and there, but not a complete list. Thought maybe Bengals.com would had a separated category for the minicamp roster, but only the guys under a contract.....

Stated by someone here from the post draft presser, but Sanu has some serious guns on him for a WR just coming out of college.

I actually didn't like that part, mainly because it's Dalton's team, not AJ's, and that's what Marvin should be saying.

I was a bit sceptical at first when reading this. However, if you read into it properly, Lewis is talking about AJ's team being the receiving corps unit within the offense and not the offense as a whole. The offense is Andy Dalton's team, and AJ is acting under him in leading the receiving corps. Which is a good thing. AJ is almost like a 5 year vet already in his skillset so it can only be good for the rest of our receivers to learn from him.
