as much as this has been discussed, TE's aren't really hurting them too bad this year. If I can dig up the stats, its RB's and FB's that are hurting them the most.

Fred Davis is really the only TE to do major damage on them.

On the season here are the stats given up to TE's through 6 games:

31 catches for 381yds and 3 TD's.

An average of 5 catches for 63yds per game. Not really that bad. The amount of catches aren't hurting them, though the 12.3 yards per catch stings a little.
Perhaps its just a gut feeling but the TEs seem to be drive extenders against us, as in every catch and blown coverage against a TE is what puts the other teams on our side of the field or bails them out of 3rd down.

We will win this game... we will win this game... we will win this game... we will win this game... say it with me now... we will win this game.. we will win this game... we must win this game.... Hell, i'm driving up from Virginia to see this game... we will win this game..... we will win this game... Ok... it's now being sent through the minds of thousands... we will win this game.. we will win this game.... we will win this game...

That averages out to 83 catches for 1016 yards and 8 TDs for the season. If our TE group could accomplish that I think we'd say we have one of the best TE groups i the league... just putting it in perspective.

perhaps. IMO its RB screens and checkdowns hurting them the most.

Another way to look at the TE issue against the Bengals:

here are the stats against again: [background=rgb(247, 247, 247)]31 catches for 381yds and 3 TD's.[/background]

[background=rgb(247, 247, 247)]Now many here will say that the Bengals themselves are underutilizing their TE's. Bengals TE's on the season: 28 catches for 353yds and 2 TD's. [/background]

[background=rgb(247, 247, 247)]Not much difference.[/background]

Steelers: Defense nears full strength

Will linebacker LaMarr Woodley play against the Bengals on Sunday? He took a major step by participating in Monday's practice. (US Presswire)

Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley, suffering from a sore right hamstring, worked out with his teammates during Monday's two-hour practice and should start against the Bengals on Sunday night if he continues to improve.
The only defensive starter likely to miss the divisional game in Cincinnati is safety Troy Polamalu (right calf), who has missed three games and parts of the other two for the Steelers (2-3). Polamalu missed Monday's "bonus" practice, along with many others.
The Steelers were off Friday through Sunday after losing to Tennessee on Thursday.
"It'll be good if we can get Woodley back," linebacker Larry Foote said. "He's a big part of our linebacking corps and our defense overall."

The Steelers' offensive line was hit the hardest last week, as center Maurkice Pouncey (ankle) and right tackle Marcus Gilbert (lower leg) are likely to be out Sunday. Doug Legursky replaced Pouncey at center, and rookie Mike Adamssaid he expected to start for Gilbert. If the Steelers dress seven players, as expected, rookie Kelvin Beachum would be a reserve tackle, while John Malecki -- a Pittsburgh native -- would be the backup at center and guard.

Also on offense, running back Rashard Mendenhall, who missed the first three games while battling back from offseason right knee surgery, suffered a bruised left Achilles. He's optimistic that he'll play Sunday.

"This is just something that has happened, and I'm going to keep working hard to get ready for this next game,'' Mendenhall said. "It's a little tight right now, but I plan on working through it. So, I'm not really worried about it right now. I'm not really frustrated at all.

"I've been in this position before, so I'll just keep working at it to get back to where I want to be. Coming off a knee injury, I'm sure I favored it a little bit. So, that probably played a part of this, as well as it being a short week for us, but I'll just continue to work. It's a long process, coming off major surgery, so I'll keep working hard and moving forward.''

With running back Isaac Redman also struggling with an ankle injury, first-year player Baron Batch is the most healthy back in the rotation. Jonathan Dwyer has been inactive the past couple weeks.

"I don't look at it like I'm the man at all,'' Batch said. "I'm No. 20, the black guy that plays for the Steelers, plays some special teams here and there, and I'm just trying to get better. I wouldn't call myself the man, but Rashard and Isaac had a long weekend, so I'm sure they'll be ready to go. And I'll just continue to play my role, whatever that is this week.''

Ta'amu situation remains cloudy: Rookie nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu was not available Monday after a police chase and arrest early Sunday morning on multiple felony charges. The team released a statement that it would make a decision on his status after gathering more information.
"It's a tough situation,'' starting nose tackle Casey Hampton said. "You really feel bad for the kid, but he made a mistake. And that's the way I look at it. We still love him, but the guy made a mistake. Not taking away from what he did, because it was a terrible thing. ... I talked to him.

"He's real emotional and feels really bad. He knows it was a bad thing that happened, and he just has to grow from it. It's up to the (management), but I know in this locker room ... his teammates know that he's a great guy.

"You hate to see that happen to a guy like him. But at the same time, he has to make better decisions. He's a grown man, and he has to make grown-man decisions. He has to do a better job with that, but I'm going to support the kid all that I can and do whatever I can to be here for him. That's what he needs from me.''

Polamalu is the key. He's not as fast as he was but that D plays with so much more confidence when he plays. If he's out, I like our chances of possibly winning a high scoring game. If he's back, I don't much like our chances.
How is he the key? He hasn't even been playing. I'd rather him be out there hobbling around biting on play action than have a healthy dude back there. Polamalu is old and sucky now.

Bengals have better O-line and D-line than the Steelers. That should give us an edge.
I'm thinking offensive lines are a push, or maybe slightly in Stealers favor. While I think our front 4 is better our LB play is certainly not.

oh come on. Our run game is struggling, but the Bengals Oline is nowhere NEAR as bad as the steelers oline.

Agree most definitely. The Steelers O-Line is far worse than ours, no question.

@GeoffHobsonCin: Lewis: Have to be able to stomp on other team's neck. Play for keeps

True story... Now understand the playcalling needs to demonstrate this principle as well as the execution. Telling the team they need that killer attitude while calling prevent sends mixed signals. (you know.... in those games we were winning)

This is one of our biggest problems. This philosophy of Marvin's of keeping the games close and playing conservative with even the smallest of leads has to go....or Marvin has to go. ZERO fire in him. Zilch!

Notes: Leonard day-to-day; AFC parity sparks why not us?

Posted 4 minutes ago

The news is good for running back Brian Leonard. X-Rays were negative Monday on his rib problem and he's day-to-day for Sunday's 8:20 p.m. game (Cincinnati's Channel 5) against the Steelers at Paul Brown Stadium. With the bye week Oct. 28, he could only miss one game and rest it for nearly three weeks…
The news is still a bit foggy out of Pittsburgh when it comes to the Steelers' mounting injury problems. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley worked Monday and is expected to play after sitting out Thursday's loss to the Titans. But safety Troy Polamalu isn't expected to play. The top two running backs, Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman, didn't practice and neither did starting center Maurkice Pouncey and starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert….
The theme of the day at PBS Monday turned out to be s AFC parity. If the Broncos beat San Diego Monday night, that would make the Bengals one of seven 3-3 teams next to 5-1 co-leaders Houston and Baltimore. And Baltimore just lost two defensive starters for the season Sunday in middle linebacker Ray Lewis (torn triceps) and cornerback Lardarius Webb (knee).
It's still anybody's season. It's like we're starting the season from scratch," Whitworth said. "It's not time to jump ship. We're 3-3 just like everybody else in our conference. At the end of the day it's not about wins and losses, it's about making the playoffs and trying to win the Super Bowl. Our goals are still right there in front of us. Somebody that is 3-3 has to go win some games and get in the playoffs. Why not let it be us?" …
Defensive tackle Domata Peko thinks head coach Marvin Lewis is simply trying to challenge his team when he says they're not nasty enough. They certainly don't agree in the D-line room, so Peko says he's anxious to show Lewis nasty on Sunday night…
The Bengals still seem to be trying to figure out the safety spot oppositeReggie Nelson. Cornerback Nate Clements, who made the move there four games ago, only played 60 percent t of the snaps Sunday while Chris Crockergot a significant boost to 38 percent. Both Nelson and Clements got talked to on the sidelines after Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon split the safeties for his 71-yard touchdown catch on the first play if the second quarter…
More snaps? WILL backer Manyy Lawson dipped to 35 percent while backupDan Skuta played the most he's played all season with 20 plays, or 31 percent. Backup end/ SAM backer Dontay Moch made his NFL debut working out of the nickel package at end sometimes and sometimes at tackle. Troy is still pretty effective when he's in the game. He's certainly not the player he used to be, but he's still better than most when he is in there.

The real key here is that even if you were to cut one of his legs off, and tie both of his arms behind his back, he'd still be WORLDS better than his backup, Ryan Mundy. Troy may occasionally over persue and give up a big play, but Mundy gets beat constantly.

The Steeler defense is most definitely a better defense with Troy in the game, even if it's for the sole reason of keeping Mundy off the field.

That's kind of awesome to know. I was assuming the backup was competent.

Who is crappier, Mundy or Mays?

for as much crap as he takes, can anyone point out a single pass Mays has given up since the Baltimore game?

It's not like teams are exploiting him as some weakness.

I hate to point out the obvious, but Mays has played significantly less since then. Crocker and Clements seem to be on the field a lot more than Mays.
