Carson Palmer expects Chad Johnson to show up for mandatory workouts, but until then he'll get his timing down with the receivers vying for Chris Henry's third receiver job.

"I don't care if you're Ocho Cinco and have an alias or you're little-known Glenn Holt or ,little known Doug Gabriel," Palmer said Wednesday. "If can get to where you're supposed to be to get open, you'll get the ball."

Palmer said he has spoken with Johnson and he told him he'll be here when he has to be.

"I believe him," Palmer said. "And I'm excited for him to get here. we've got a lot of work to do."...

It may seem like the Bengals have the NFL's toughest schedule, but according to Elias Sports Bureau that honor falls to AFC North rival Pittsburgh. The Bengals are tied for the sixth-toughest sked against foes that had a .547 winning percentage. The Steelers go against a slate of .598.

Palmer admitted during a media session in the locker room that Henry's release two weeks ago after his fifth arrest "you could see it coming," but he thinks that players such as the newly-signed Gabriel, the second-year Holt, and a healthy Antonio Chatman can bolster a receiving corps led by the absent Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Gabriel, a five-year veteran with 101 NFL catches, has caught balls with Palmer for just about week. But he has caught this act before. During his one seaon with New England, a year that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw him a touchdown against New England.

Gabriel, who played with Palmer in the 2003 Senior Bowl, said his session with Palmer Tuesday in the film room reminded him of his time with Brady.

"With a quarterback with a mindset like him, it won't make a difference what receiver you had," Gabriel said. "For me personally, if you get into his head, he'll make you a great player ." ....

Palmer is also putting in his time on the NFL Draft and offered this take on fellow USC product Sedrick Ellis, the defensive tackle many Mock Drafts have the Bengals taking No. 9.

"I've heard great things," Palmer said. "He's a guy we could definitely use. Playmaker, and a great guy from (what) everybody) I talked to (says) as far as character is concerned. Great character."

Also on the board is USC linebacker Keith Rivers, but Palmer, sounding like a true draftnick, said, "Sedrick is more of a guy in our range, more of a top 10 pick."...

Linebacker Dhani Jones is back after singing a three-yer deal and,. as usual, brought a batch of incites.

On why he re-signed:

"You're allowed to be who you are," Jones said. "That's one thing I always looked at for a team. To be able to be who you are. The thing about us during the season, you have to be able to direct that energy toward winning.

"And i think that's the area where we have the most to work on," he said. "A lot of people, who ever they are, when it comes down to the work week, to the team that you're going to play, concenate all that who you are into the plays and into winning. Who is ever out there. Whether it's me, Eric Henderson, it could be, I don't know. Everyone across the board. You never know how things pan out."....

It appears backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to sign his one-year tender (estimated $950,000) for a restricted free agent...

It may seem like the Bengals have the NFL's toughest schedule, but according to Elias Sports Bureau that honor falls to AFC North rival Pittsburgh. The Bengals are tied for the sixth-toughest sked against foes that had a .547 winning percentage. The Steelers go against a slate of .598...

According to Elias the Top Six seats belong to the Colts at .594, Jacksonville .559, Baltimore .551, Minnesota .551, and the Bengals are tied with the Browns and Texans.
Palmer: Chad will be there
BY MARK CURNUTTE | MCURNUTTE@ENQUIRER.COM

Quarterback Carson Palmer has spoken via phone with unhappy wide receiver Chad Johnson, and Johnson assured Palmer “he’ll be there when he has to.”

Palmer spoke to reporters late this morning during a break in the team’s voluntary offseason strength and conditioning program. Johnson, disgruntled about a number of issues with the Bengals, is skipping the program for the first time.

The first mandatory event of the offseason is the full-squad minicamp in mid-June.
Palmer said he “100 percent” understood the business side of the league and said he respected Johnson’s right to behave similarly to a chief executive officer trying to get a new job.

Still, as a football teammate, Palmer was happy to hear that Johnson would show up.

“I’m hoping he’ll be out in L.A. training,” Palmer said in reference to extensive on-field throwing he has done with Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and other Bengals receivers in Los Angeles in the past couple of Julys.

The Bengals are now without the No. 3 receiver from the past few seasons, Chris Henry, waived April 3 after another brush with the law.

"You thought it might happen, given his track record,” Palmer said of Henry, who remains under house arrest following a court appearance for assault and criminal damaging. “It's too bad. (Henry is) an amazing talent, and to see him throw it away is tough. He's a good-hearted person. It's just too bad.”

Palmer is optimistic that the Bengals have talent at wide receiver and will find even more, if need be.

"It doesn't seem we have a lot of options from an outside perspective," Palmer said. "But we have Antonio (Chatman), Glenn (Holt), and now Doug (Gabriel) is here. We still have T.J. (Houshmandzadeh) and Chad (Johnson). ... None of them are rookies. They are guys with experience."

In a related matter, backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said he would sign his $927,000 restricted free agent offer with the Bengals in a day or two.
Uh... this doesn't sound good.

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson left no room for doubt Wednesday: He wants out of Cincinnati as fast as possible and he doesn't plan on reporting for any future Bengal function -- mandatory or voluntary.

Johnson
What spurred Johnson's immediate reaction was a statement made by quarterback Carson Palmer that indicated Johnson had told Palmer he would be at the team's mandatory minicamp in mid-June. Johnson said that wasn't true.

"I want to make this very clear,'' Johnson said Wednesday. "I don't know where he got that. I made no assertion to Carson that I would do that. Nothing has changed from what I've been saying for three months that I don't want to play for the Bengals.''

Johnson made one of his strongest statements in saying he is not planning on reporting to any team functions because he wants to be traded.

"I want to be traded before the draft, and if that doesn't happen, I want to be traded as soon as possible,'' Johnson said. "I don't intend on reporting to anything.''

Johnson is skipping the team's offseason workouts as he tries to push for a trade. But the Bengals have also made it clear that they have no plans of trading him.

The Pro Bowl wide receiver said he was surprised by Palmer's comments about his possibly reporting to mandatory camp.

"I wish he would stay out of my business,'' Johnson said.

Wow I'm shellshocked. I was okay with the antics as long as he just showed up. But to take a shot at Carson now? I'm in the "he's got to go crowd" now. Have fun playing with Cleo Lemon.

I guess the joke's on me (ideally, posters should include a link).

Now, regarding the article.....just Wow!

I'm also in the "let him rot on the bench" crowd. Chad has no leverage at all, and his marketability takes another significant blow after this latest outburst.

It'll be interesting to see what ever-the-statesman Carson says in reply...if anything.

Carson: Chad....who? We have a lot of Johnsons on this team, but I don't recall any Chad. There was once a great player by that name, but he was betrayed and murdered by Darth Ocho Cinco.

Come on Carson, speak up. You're the leader of the Bengals. Say something. (I'm sure Carson is shell-shocked about Chad's comments. However, he should say something.)

Maybe it's time to put Corey Dillon, Chad Johnson, and Carl Pickens jerseys on Larry, Moe, and Curly.

Fuck that. Suspend his sorry ass, and let his ass rot at home. Maybe he can get some ESPN highlights playing madden or playing with his Johnson. He shouldn't see PBS at all.

I have an awful tough time believing that Carson came out and said something like that - unless it was said to him first.

Someone should tell Stinko that the Chosen One is off-limits. He needs a bitch-slapping.

Where is an updated Whodeyian Prophesy when you need one?
Palmer sad for Henry loss
BY MARK CURNUTTE | MCURNUTTE@ENQUIRER.COM

The Bengals are now without the No. 3 receiver from the past few seasons, Chris Henry, waived April 3 after another brush with the law.

"You thought it might happen, given his track record,” quarterback Carson Palmer said today of Henry, who remains under house arrest following a court appearance for assault and criminal damaging.

“It’s too bad. (Henry is) an amazing talent, and to see him throw it away is tough. He’s a good-hearted person. It’s just too bad.”

Palmer is optimistic that the Bengals have talent at wide receiver and will find even more, if need be.

"It doesn’t seem we have a lot of options from the outside perspective," Palmer said. "But we have Antonio (Chatman), Glenn (Holt), and now Doug (Gabriel) is here. We still have T.J. (Houshmandzadeh) and Chad (Johnson). ... None of them are rookies. They are guys with experience."

Chatman, who missed much of the past two seasons with hamstring and groin injuries, is undergoing extensive training on his legs this offseason – even more than a year ago, he said.

“I’m drinking more water than I ever did,” Chatman said of his regimen. “And I can’t remember the last time I had a soda.”

Gabriel, signed as a free agent by the Bengals after sitting out all of 2007, was a teammate of Palmer’s in the 2003 Senior Bowl.

Fitted with the No. 12 jersey, Gabriel said the Bengals offer “a great opportunity” and has already fed off Palmer’s energy and talent during voluntary pass drills this month.

“He’s got a cannon (for an arm),” Gabriel said.

INK: Backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said Wednesday that he would sign his one-year, $927,000 restricted free agent offer with the Bengals in a day or two.

SCHEDULES: Pittsburgh, arguably the Bengals’ chief AFC North division rival, will have the toughest schedule in the league this coming season. Its opponents from 2007 had a combined .598 winning percentage.

Baltimore has eight games against 2007 playoff teams, and upstart Cleveland – the new national media darling – have five prime-time national TV games, three on Monday night and one each on Sunday night and Thursday night.
How in the hell does New England win so many games if they keep scoring on themselves?
