ROUND 3: Bengals take Michael Johnson #70 overall
Great pick and can't wait to see him play in stripes. I understand depth and rotation, but this selection and the Chase Coffman selection kind of makes you question the BIG free agent signings last season. I know both players were hurt, but both guys got some good money (on the Bengals FA scale) and then we spend our 3rd round picks on the same positions. When you look on paper though both of our selections are freaks, so maybe it was just too hard to pass up. We shall see. Gruden loves both and he is good looking.
hasn't everyone been clamoring for the Bengals to finally get quality depth? This accomplishes that, which you alluded to. You can never have too much good Dline depth, and Palmer can never have too many weapons.

I agree, but 3rd round picks are important picks and them using the picks on the same two 'biggest free agent signings in the Marvin Lewis era' position just kind of made me wonder. Unless they felt that these two picks had a great upside and were steals. I hope that is the case and it isn't telling us about Odom and Utecht.

Odom's 2008 salary 12.8 mil

Utecht's 4 mil

I agree that this calls the Utecht signing into question - unless they think that Coffman can catch & block whereas Utecht is more of a Dallas Clark, receiving-only type.

However, with Johnson, I don't think that it's a problem at all. He's going to be a 3rd down pass-rushing specialist, maybe Odom kicks down to tackle on obvious passing downs.
NFL DRAFT: GEORGIA TECH: 3rd-rounder Johnson vows to prove worth
By Ken Sugiura

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Monday, April 27, 2009

The beginning of Michael Johnson’s professional football career didn’t start out as planned.

Tabbed a potential first-round draft pick, the dynamic defensive end from Georgia Tech fell to the third round, where the Cincinnati Bengals scooped him up Sunday.

Given his chance, he’ll take care of the rest.

“I thought I’d be [drafted] on Saturday, but you play the cards you’re dealt,” Johnson said Sunday by phone from his family’s home in Selma, Ala. “I look forward to going in there and proving myself. I’m going to go earn my money.”

Johnson was one of four former Tech players to be selected Sunday in rounds 3-7 of the NFL draft. The Miami Dolphins picked offensive tackle Andrew Gardner in the sixth round, the Falcons took defensive tackle Vance Walker with the first pick in the seventh and the New England Patriots tabbed defensive tackle Darryl Richard later in the seventh. It’s Tech’s largest draft class since 2004, when five Jackets were selected.

Johnson, one of the best pass rushers in Tech history, will have a chance to play immediately as a pass-rush specialist. The Bengals managed 17 sacks last season, tied for second fewest in the NFL.

However, he’ll have to deal with the criticism that his consistency and desire did not match his considerable physical talent. The issue hounded him in the run-up to the draft and even from his new employer.

“This kid is a tremendous, tremendous athlete,” Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said Sunday at a news conference. “He doesn’t play hard all the time. That’s our job, to make sure that he does that.”

Johnson, an All-American last season, said he’ll go to Cincinnati this week before the Bengals’ rookie mini-camp next weekend to get started as soon as he can.

“Any complaint that anyone might have is what I’m going to focus on more now until it becomes a strength,” Johnson said.

Gardner, a two-time first-team All-ACC selection, received a lot of pre-draft attention from the Dolphins, agent Lester Archambeau said. Undoubtedly, his season-ending shoulder surgery (to repair a now-healed torn labrum) caused his stock to drop. Gardner, a lightly recruited player out of Sandy Creek High School who started 48 consecutive games for Tech, may get looks at both guard and tackle.

Walker and Richard, who partnered in the middle of the Tech defense for the past two seasons, have reason to be excited about their new employers.

Walker, who turned 22 Sunday, lives in the Duluth area, not far from the Falcons’ Flowery Branch complex. Richard, who holds an MBA and aspires to be in sports administration, will go to the Patriots, one of the best-run franchises.
you upgrade when you can. utecht was injured last season and his deal is only for a couple of years anyway. what i love is the mismatches we're going to be able to create flipping from 3 wides to a 2 TE set. there's a lot of different things you can do with that 2 TE formation that haven't been a part of our package. it's only going to make our offense that much more versatile and limit other defenses from second guessing us. try to put 8 in the box and see how carson takes you to school! you better keep your safeties honest...if not he's going to have your lunch. then mix it up and run out of the formation. so many, many things you can do, there, which is what makes it an extremely effective formation. coffman and utecht on the field at the same time is going to leave some teams scratching holes in their heads. we've finally got a legitimate, effective, pass catching 2 TE set that i've been begging for....for years!

It just gives a play we have never even been able to use before. The two tight end set.
my friend, that's not a play...that's a whole playbook, in and of itself. :049:

Whats exciting about this pick and where we stand along the DL now is that Johnson should be able to contribute in 3rd down situations from day one.

IMO we've had a hard time getting "role players" actually into the games in said roles during their first years and Johnson should break this trend. He can get in right away and do what he does best, rush the passer as hard and fast as he can maybe 10 times a game and we can avoid all the inconsistancy problems he has taking 40-50 snaps a game.

It will be nice to see his long arms reach out and swat the ball out of Big Jens even though he's engaged with the blocker.
his arm length is unreal. zimmer said on a normal sized door, he can touch the top of it while doing the same on the bottom. do you know anybody that could grab both ends of a door at the same time. as i sit here looking at my "normal sized door" that absolutely baffles me. when you add a 6'7" height and a 40" vertical to that, you have a first class skywalker. this guy's gonna swat a lot of passes and block a lot of kicks.
Jerome Simpson can touch top of his door and bottom using his thumb and pinky fingers.

Exactly. This offense has been a donut for so long. TJ did what he could but what really kept this offense from becoming a consistent machine like what Indy had was a defense's safeties just weren't honest and could really bracket cover Chad and TJ/Henry.

Having Utecht, Coffman, and hopefully a Henry with his head on straight should open this offense by being versatile and really being able to hit things in the middle of the field.

Also keep in mind that everyone is saying the Depth Chart is: Kelly, Utech, Coffman etc.

Does anyone really want Reggie Kelly in the top 2 anymore anyway? He was never good in the pass game and last year he was awful blocking. I'm down with Utech, Coffman, Sherry etc to spell the end of the Kelly era here.

We need to keep those LBs on the Steelers and Ravens honest, dropping some pass off in the middle of the field to big TEs is just the remedy.

Hahahhahaha

Seriously, Gruden was loving our picks.....and for good reason. Best Bengals draft (on paper) that I can remember.
Round Three
Three Picks I Love

70. Cincinnati — Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech Call me nuts (and you have), but I had this stud out of Georgia Tech going 19th overall to Tampa Bay in my mock draft. The knocks on Johnson are that he had a tendency to take plays off from time to time. Really? Because Eugene Monroe, the tackle out of Virginia, said he was the best defensive player he faced in college. Oh well. The Bengals roll the dice and take him at No. 70. Not a bad way to start Day 2.

Round Winner — Cincinnati Michael Johnson and Chase Coffman were each college standouts who slipped on boards. The Bengals were the beneficiaries. In Coffman, the Bengals get a potential elite tight end. Ben Utecht is not the answer. Coffman is.
He won the Mackey Award for best TE and was First Team All American last year. He also has the NCAA D-IA record for receptions and yards for a TE.

Were it not for the foot injury in their bowl game he would have gone much sooner.

Even though he didn't participate at the Combine
or his Pro Day, he was still ranked as the 3rd best
TE, and was projected to be a 2-3 round pick by many.

And almost everyone that I have read said he has
the "best set of hands" (note not biggest, best) of
all the TEs and has room to grow and become Elite.

Coffman is coming off a 90-catch, 987-yard, 10-touchdown season, finishing up a stellar career as a Tiger. Coffman broke former teammate Martin Rucker's records and leaves Mizzou as the school's all-time leading receiver from the tight end position on his way to winning the 2008 John Mackey Award, given to the top tight end in all of college football. Coffman could go as high as early in the second round.

Coffman? Oh yeah he is! It's the pick I am most excited about. ZERO bust potential (barring injury) in my eyes. It's what made me feel that even if the Bengals traded down & took satan with their last 8 picks, the draft was an A+. Coffman was projected to be a late half 1st or early 2nd round pick until he broke his foot & couldn't work out. He's so good it's not even funny. You can tell by watching him play that he's got a really confident attitude & moxy about him, which our offense/team needs. I love it!

he will be our Heath Miller/Todd Heap (though I'll admit, I liked Travis Beckum more pre-draft)

They're not kidding when they say he catches everything.

check his stats. he's had at least 500 yds every year for missouri, which is saying something for a freshman. this year, he caught 90 balls for nearly a 1,000 yds. those an ungodly numbers for a TE in college. as these stats show, his body of work shows he is no flash in the pan. it's also important to point out, for the first three years, he shared TE receptions with martin rucker, who the browns drafted last year.

Thanks for the input guys! I guess I hadn't really done much reading on the TEs that were coming out. (god knows i haven't watched much college ball the last 4 years <_<)

It's great to know that Coffman looks to be that good of a player. I saw him as icing on the cake behind the guys we took that I was familiar with. Looks like he might be a helluva lot better than that :)
