ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Cincinnati Bengals are hosting cornerback Tracy Porter for a free agent visit on Thursday.
Cincinnati needs corner help in the worst way. Left cornerback Nate Clements has entered his decline phase at age 32, and right corner Leon Hall is trying to return from a torn Achilles’ tendon.
Porter has played right corner and covered the slot in New Orleans. He’s still only 25 years old, and is one of the top cornerbacks left on the free agent market.
Per Schefter, Porter has also drawn interest from the Raiders, and the Saints would like to keep him.
A previous report also linked Porter to the Rams, though they may have backed off after breaking the bank for Cortland Finnegan.

As they probably should be... just sucks for the fans.

It should be.. And what is good for the fans ultimately is what is best for the team. I think the fans could help themselves out the most by learning some patience.

I imagine a lot of their visits will be like that, and they'd probably prefer them all to be like that.

Of course it is... but what fun would it be for Bengals fans to realize this (it happens every year) because then what would they have to bitch about incessantly every FA signing period?

Bunch of mewling little pussies... OOPS!

I meant baby cats!!!

Porter is a very athletic cornerback with excellent foot quickness, agility and body control. He has above-average straight line speed but understands how to read routes and knows how to use angles to stay with deep routes. He is most effective lined up over the inside slot receivers, who tend to be shorter and run underneath routes. He can plant and drive on the ball thrown in front of him and is quick to accelerate to the ball. He has a quick, fluid hip turn that allows him to match receivers on go routes but can struggle if they get a step on him after the catch. He is a willing tackler and will insert himself in run defense but is not a very physical presence.

They have the money, they want someone better.

They already have someone better in Patrick Robinson, who took Porter's starting job. Porter is probably not as good as Adam Jones when Jones is healthy and available but unless bounty-gate catches up to him, Porter should be available more than Jones.

I actually really like Porter. He has some definite negatives, obviously. If he didn't, he wouldn't be relatively cheap as a youngish FA CB. But he has a knack for the big play and decent coverage skills.

I would definitely like this signing if it happens and I'd prefer Porter over Ross or any of the other 3rd tier FA CBs still available.
