So many mismatch opportunities on this offense.  Lots of guys capable of going up and getting the ball, coming down with it in a crowd.  If this doesn't turn into more extended drives and red zone success, I don't know what will.

I think Tyler is going to be a big guy on third down just like TJ came through back in his day.  This is going to lead to better field position/more points/keeping the defense off the field longer, all the good things that successful teams do.

Very cerebrial guy as well.  Don't think it is going to take much time to get adjusted to the NFL.  I thought that I was going to lose my excitement over this pick a little bit today, but by god, this is unbelievably awesome.  Bengal fans are going to love Eifert.  Plus he is going to get to go up against Mr. 92 in practice.  This past week has been great.

Imagine the red zone with Eifert, Gresham, Green, Charles, and Sanu on the field.

I brought this up a couple days ago in a different thread.  I was talking about 25 yards and in with this group on the field.  I was thinking

we would need to trade up to get him.  Glad I was wrong..

Tyler Eifert is represented by Tom Condon and Ben Dogra, who also have of note for #bengals A.J. Green, Jermaine Gresham and Andre Smith

It shouldn't make a difference who  his agent is, they're all slotted and they can't really bargain for much, eifert has ZERO red flags so his deal should get done pretty damn quickly.

It's funny I wonder if his rookie contract will be for less then gresham's despite getting drafted in the same exact spot at the same exact position with the same exact agent, the new CBA I think it will.

These are the reasons I don't think it's a bad pick

Those are reasons why I think it was a good (if not great) pick.

I think of him as a WR who has the size to move inside and block in the run game.  He's not a Reggie Kelly blocker but the clips I;ve seen shows him delaying his man enought to have successful runs.  and the part I like the most is he runs crisp routes and goes up for EVERYTHING.  There's no way he's alligator arming anything (cough cough Jermaine cough cough) and doesn't need to be wide open to make a completion.  He should take the heat off of AJ and even helps the run game more than a WR would.  He seems like he's gotten better year after year so he;s still got upside to him.

Regardless of what position he's penciled in at, his presence should help multiple other positions within the offense as well as possibly light a fire under Gresham's ass.  He seems to play better angry so maybe this will keep his adrenaline up from here on out.  Plus it gives us leverage with Gresh's contract if Eifert pans out....

Unless you prefered someone else available you had ranked higher what's not to like?

So AJ's agent is Titties' agent?  Well I fully expect we'll option his 5th year and Franchise tag him twice now as there is zero hope for a traditional contract extension based on market value.

Seven first-round surprises from the 2013 NFL Draft

» TE Tyler Eifert to the Bengals at No. 21: Confession: As a lifelong Browns fan, a wave of panic shot through me as this pick flashed across the screen. Eifert is a massive, playmaking tight end who represents a nightmare for defenses. This is exactly the type of player Rob Chudzinski would have melted for in Cleveland, and now the Browns must deal with this guy twice a season. Pair Eifert withJermaine Gresham, and the Bengals -- at times a sleep-inducing attack last season -- have become much more dynamic.

I'd think being a lifelong Brown's fan is enough reason to panic in itself

CINCINNATI BENGALS

Grade: A-plus.

Hensley's comment: The Bengals didn't need a tight end. But teams that draft based on need usually end up picking in the top 10 every year. The Bengals went with the best athlete on the board in Eifert, an excellent red-zone target who is a match-up nightmare for defenses. Eifert was rated the 12th-best player in the draft (one spot behind Austin) by Todd McShay and the 13th-best prospect by Mel Kiper Jr. And the Bengals landed him at No. 21. If the Bengals were going for need, they would've picked a safety like Elam or Florida International's John Cyprien. But Cincinnati can pick up a safety with one of its two picks in the second round. A top-rated tight end like Eifert wasn't going to be there.

What the Bengals are saying ... Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden: "I’m sure (quarterback)Andy Dalton is happy right now. We try to make Andy happy, and the more weapons you have, obviously, the better. We need to take pressure off (wide receiver) A.J. Green, and this is one step in doing that.”

??????

There are things you can complain about with Te'o, but that really isn't one of them.

I mean the whole fake dead girlfriend who ended up being a gay guy thing kind of lends credence to the headcase accusation... at the very least he's on a level of naivety rarely seen.

RayM may want people to like him, but he has stopped short of inventing them out of whole cloth.

Follow every pick of the 2013 NFL draft

Just one wide receiver was selected in the top 20 picks of Round 1, the elusive Tavon Austin. Not many other players at that position can match what tight end Tyler Eifert brings to the table, which is why the Bengals pounced after Eifert slid to No. 21.

Eifert is a reliable blocker inside, but his real allure is as a pass catcher — at an athletic 6-foot-5, he can stretch the field vertically, while lining up either at a traditional tight end spot or in the slot. Notre Dame even used him split wide at times, trying to maximize mismatches against undersized defensive backs.
In Cincinnati, he’ll pair with current starting TE Jermaine Gresham to give the Bengals arguably the best 1-2 punch at that position this side of Rob Gronkowski-Aaron Hernandez. That tandem ought to make Andy Dalton’s job easier at QB, while also relieving some pressure off A.J. Green, even if not in the same way that an elite receiver would.

Another factor to consider: Gresham’s contract is up after 2014, and Cincinnati will have to deal with locking up a lot of its young talent around that time. Eifert’s arrival might allow them to let Gresham walk.

Grade: B-plus. This was the type of pick a team that believes it can reach the Super Bowl makes. And the Bengals might be right about that level after back-to-back playoff berths. Eifert does not fill an obvious need for them, but this is a savvy pick and one that makes the team better.

Jarvis Jones was a perfect fit and filled a huge need, but I still can't believe the Steelers passed on Eifert.

I'm sure they talked about it, Jones was such an obvious selection for them, it's almost the steelers way to draft the Pass Rushing specialist LB in the 15-25 range of the draft.
