Newman and Collins Back at Practice

Recommended Posts

Having Newman back is a big boost especially against the Chargers.

WHO-DEY! Can't wait until Sunday! Nervous already.

Terence Newman, Anthony Collins return to practice

Posted by Josh Alper on January 3, 2014, 11:31 AM EST

The Bengals were missing three players at practice on Thursday, but Friday finds a full house at Cincinnatis final practice of the week.

Geoff Hobson of the teams website reports that cornerback Terence Newman and tackle Anthony Collins are buckled up for practice after missing both of the teams previous practices this week. Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, who was sidelined by an illness on Thursday, is also back in action for the Bengals.

Newman has missed the last three games because of a knee injury, leaving the Bengals without both their starting corners with Leon Hall already on injured reserve. Kirkpatrick and Adam Jones have started those games and all three corners will likely see a lot of action against the Chargers if theyre in the lineup.

Collins, whos dealing with an ankle injury, has been starting at left tackle since Andrew Whitworth moved to left guard in the wake of Clint Bolings trip to injured reserve. Hes started seven games overall this season and has performed well when called upon.

The Bengals wont get Hall or defensive tackle Geno Atkins back, but it looks like they have a good chance at having all the current members of their 53-man roster available as they try to win a playoff game for the first time in 23 years.

With Newman having been sidelined for three-plus weeks, you have to wonder if one day's practice(limited or unlimited) is enough time to get ready to play such an important game. Cornerback is such a critical position, and a player has to be able to turn and run without being hampered. Pull up lame one time and it could be a touchdown. But whether it's Kirkpatrick or Newman out there, I'm sure Rivers will test that side very early.

He's been in the league for years. He'll be fine. Its not like they're gonna have him playing every snap after one practice and sitting out for a month.

I'm not worried about Newman suddenly forgetting how to play cornerback. He just needs to be able to cut, backpedal and run at full speed. Put on Green and MJones in practice and test him fully.

Point being is that he has been around long enough. If he says he can go, he can go. Why risk injury? The guy isn't stupid. If he cannot play he will not play.

Newman and Taze are my favorite players.  Newman for being the consummate veteran and professional and Taze....well no need to explain Taze.

Friday update: Newman bubbles up

Geoff Hobson

Bengals.com

It remains to be seen how the Bengals are going to list cornerback Terence Newman later Friday, but he was on the field buckled up in a helmet when they worked inside the University of Cincinnati bubble in a morning practice. He was joined by left tackle Anthony Collins (ankle), sidelined the last two days.

Newman, an 11-year veteran who missed the final three games with a knee sprain, made his first appearance since the injury in the Dec. 8 victory over the Colts.

Also on the field was center Kyle Cook (foot), which was a good sign after he was limited Thursday in his first workout of the week that began with him on crutches. He said after Wednesday's practice that the key would be how he felt the next day. Also back was cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick after he missed Thursday's practice with an illness.

It wasn't exactly a day at the beach inside the bubble as the city shivered in the bright sunlight of 15 degrees compared to Friday's high of 71 degrees forecasted for San Diego. The call for Sunday's 1:05 p.m. wild card game at Paul Brown Stadium is a kickoff temperature hovering around freezing with a mix of snow and rain.

John Clayton just said Newman is doubtful

. The Bengals announced that cornerback Terence Newman is doubtful with a knee injury for Sunday's playoff tilt with the San Diego Chargers. A laundry list of Cincy players are questionable, including defensive end Wallace Gilberry (concussion) and tight ends Tyler Eifert (neck) and Jermaine Gresham (hamstring), who both practiced fully on Friday.

OK...let's say Newman can't go...who plays where and on whom?

Overall, the secondary played OK against the Rats' receivers and TE's I thought.

Yeh but given the Bolts have a better passing attack, Newman being doubtful makes me anxious. You can bet they will try and isolate Dre with Keenan Allen one-on-one whenever possible.

As for lineup without Newman, I reckon you'll see Jones and Dre as starting corners with Brandon Ghee and Crocker sharing snaps in the nickle.
