BengalRep85-9 Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 That ump last night was one of the worst I've seen in awhile. No consistency with strikes at all. Pitches 4 inches outside were balls but pitches a foot outside were strikes.. His outside corner was completely different for righties than lefties. He had no business being behind the plate of an MLB game. This "slow start" offensively isn't a temporary thing, it was a problem all last year too. Have to get a consistently productive bat in the lineup.
BengalRep85-9 Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 Also, Latos suffered a setback yesterday in his rehab and will be shut down for a bit. Not good.

|Bunghole| Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 I still don't understand the decision to pinch hit Pena, of all people. Was there nobody else available (Heisey?)?
BigDawgBengal Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 I still don't understand the decision to pinch hit Pena, of all people. Was there nobody else available (Heisey?)? Heisey was used in the 8th.

Him taking a walk with a runner on second against a good pitcher does not do us a lot of good.

They're not going to give him much to hit when the guy behind him in the order is carrying a .171 batting average.
JC Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 Pitching good enough to win a pennant, bats good enough to finish with about the same record as the Astros.

How about driving in a run on a hittable ball outside the strike zone.
T-Dub Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 No, but he takes a lot of hittable pitches. How about driving in a run on a hittable ball outside the strike zone. He's one of the best hitters in the game, I think he knows what pitches he can drive and which he can't? Not trying to be a dick but it kind of annoys me how much criticism he's getting, yet the guy hitting for shit that should be protecting him in the order is a fan favorite. Votto's tied with Frazier for #2 in hits behind Phillips. Frazier and Heisey both need more at-bats.

He is the best hitter on the team and IMO he needs to drive in a few more runs.
T-Dub Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 Votto was in the 2 spot today, not sure if it made much difference as I only caught the last few innings on the radio. I just looked up the RISP numbers on ESPN and they have Votto 7th of the every day starters. Can't really defend that, I admit.
Jason Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 And just to be clear, I'm not "bashing" Votto. I just want to see him be more aggressive in run producing situations.
CincyInDC Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 I dropped the dough on mlb.tv and watched this game. ummmm.... I'd heard from y'all that we didn't have any bats, but dayum. On the bright side the Roku interface is not too shabby. If only NFL would be available there I'd be a happy camper.

BigDawgBengal Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 I know it's just mid April but the Reds are already 6 games out of first place. They need to get their butt in gear before they kill their chances of winning the division in April.

On that note, I guess Simon goes back to the pen once Latos is ready but man he's exceeded expectations. I suppose it's a nice insurance policy to have if one of the other starters goes down that he can step in. I really didn't see that coming from him. He was pretty shaky at times in relief last season. Perhaps it's just the small sample size and nobody's really seen his stuff as a starter but damn his two outings were quality.
BengalRep85-9 Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 This team has so many offensive holes right now it's laughable. You could see this coming and now they're saddled with 3 big money, basically untradeable, contracts. We could legitimately be 10+ games out before the end of the month. Yikes..

Man I hope that's not the case. We need Bruce, Votto and Phillips to start lighting it up, and the others will respond. You know who gives me a glimmer of hope (completely unfounded)? Mesoraco. If that dude gets rolling, look out. He can hit when he's on.
