Going into the 2023 NFL season, it was fair to wonder if the Cincinnati Bengals could wind up fielding the best offensive line of the Joe Burrow era.

If it happens, the ascent to that status will have to begin in Week 2.

Over the course of the 24-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns, new left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., transitioned right tackle Jonah Williams and the rest of the crew struggled in the inclement weather.

So much so, the line had the worst pass block win rate (30 percent) of any team through the late afternoon games, according to ESPN’s Seth Walder.

Andrew Russell followed up with data on pressures allowed by the line and other blockers:

Bengals pressure rates allowed in Week 1 with total pressures and pass pro reps:
Mixon - 25%, 1 (4)
Cappa - 8.8%, 3 (34)
Williams - 8.8%, 3 (34) *charged sack*
Brown Jr - 8.8%, 3 (34)
Volson - 5.9%, 2 (34)
Karras - 5.9%, 2 (34)
T Williams - 0.0% (2)

Now, some considerations. For one, most lines are going to have a miserable day against Myles Garrett, easily a future Hall of Famer. It was a slick, rainy day, Joe Burrow didn’t appear to have his usual mobility coming off the calf injury and the whole unit didn’t have many summer reps together.

Which is to say the offense can recover from this — and perhaps very soon. But it’s not the fast start some might’ve hoped for after the upgrades and vibes that Burrow was near-100 percent.

Oh, Dopey Me for thinking moving Joni Williams from the

left side to the right would make a bit of difference in

his sucktitude.

Orlando Brown showed why he was available as a free agent.

His pass blocking technique was to allow the rusher to tire himself

out by running around him so often to get into the backfield.

I would caution everyone not to overreact after 1 game, where they played together for the first time, during a monsoon, on slippery grass, and the QB didn't trust planting and cutting on his recovering calf with a wet field, against one of the best DEs to ever play in the NFL.

We will know a lot more after week 2.

Myles Garrett is certainly good but he is not in the stratosphere of being a Lawrence Taylor type player our coaches were badly outcoached and Zac Taylor needs to learn how to run the ball more especially in that type of weather

Since I would put Taylor as the #1 NFL talent of all time, I agree. But I still think Garrett would rank as one of the 20 best DEs to ever play the position and 2nd best currently after Nick Bosa.

Dawand Jones looked pretty good out there at RT, he came in for Conklin and the quality of play didn't drop off at all...could have been a Bengal, ijs....but we drafted defense because our oline doesn't need any upgrading..

Yeah, that part was hard to swallow.

Conklin is out for the year now, and Jones is going to have the opportunity to show why he should have been taken.

At some point the consistent failure to protect Burrow has to fall on Pollack.  Better players, but same result.

Not just Pollack but whoever is scouting the guys we are drafting and or signing. This has been going on before Zack and Pollack were even here.

Well over a decade long problem. The only good OL they have drafted in 12-13 years is Volson and a few folks here may argue that he’s any good.

If you upgrade players and constantly get the same results, then perhaps it's schematic, and even an OL of 5 Anthony Munozs wouldn't matter.

The Bengals passing scheme demands a Kamara / Gibbs type RB for it to work and they have yet to use one. Going in shotgun and having Mixon stand next to Burrow as a predictable blocker allows the DL to ignore the run entirely and pin their ears back.

The Bengals should be calling KC and offering a 3rd rd pick for CEH, though KC likely wouldn't do it as they wouldn't want to reunite him and Burrow.
