Damn I thought we finally got rid of Roland and now his sorry ass is back...hope he doesn't play or Dalton may go down.

he's really just insurance if one of the tackles goes down.  If you're gonna start Collins, you need a backup tackle.

Say collins gets hurt, you move whit back to LT and Pollack to LG.

If whit gets hurt you put pollack in at LG.

If smith gets hurt you move collins to RT and Whit to LT and Pollack to LG.

It would probably take 2 tackles getting hurt for Roland to actually see the field other than as a 6 OL.

I wonder how Hawkinson is progressing.  Fragel isn't here anymore, is he?

I read lapham's comment more as "a miracle is happening" not "it will take a miracle"

Let's hope.  I love the thought of Collins-Whit-Cook-Zeitler-Smith.

Listening to the 3rd hour of Bengals Line on podcast now.  His interpretation is definitely "it would take a miracle".

Carlos Dunlap didn't start and missed the first six plays
By Josh Kirkendall  @CincyJungle on Dec 3 2013, 12:14p 7

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports
Bengals offensive tackle Andre Smith was benched because it was believed that he violated a team rule. Did Carlos Dunlap face the same thing?

While attention has primarily focused on Andre Smith and his proverbial benching against the San Diego Chargers (because he was believed to have violated a team rule), one of our readers pointed out that he wasn't the only one.

Entering Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers, defensive end Carlos Dunlap had started every game this year and played the bulk of every snap in the opening series during the first 11 games. Yet, against the San Diego Chargers, he was no where to be found when Cincinnati's starting defense jogged onto the field. Wallace Gilberry started the game at left defensive end and played the first six snaps during San Diego's opening possession.

With 11:16 remaining in the first quarter, Dunlap entered the game for the first time on third down with two yards to go at midfield. It was shades of 2010, '11 and '12 with Robert Geathers starting and Dunlap primarily playing a pass rushing role before he became a three-down defensive end this season.

We're not conjecturing why the Bengals started Gilberry over Dunlap (though with recent news regarding Smith, it's hard not to connect those dots).

Maybe it was Mike Zimmer's initial game-plan, but we can't really support that theory -- not when Dunlap is one of your best defenders on the field.

Plus, after missing the first six snaps of the game, Dunlap would go on to play 56 of the next 61 defensive snaps. This is after he played all but two snaps against the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens in week nine and 10 respectively -- he missed eight snaps against the Browns, but many of the team's starters were rotating out during Cleveland's final possession with Cincinnati capturing a 41-20 lead.

Dennis Roland

When the Bengals put left guard Clint Boling on season-ending injured reserve with a torn ACL Tuesday, they turned to a familiar face to add depth along the offensive line in the person of Dennis Roland.

Roland, the 6-9 man mountain who plays right tackle and guard and played in every game of Cincinnati's three previous playoff seasons, returned to the club after he was released following the third game of this season to make room for nickel back Chris Crocker.

The Roland signing doesn't appear to tip where the Bengals are going to play left tackle Andrew Whitworth this Sunday in the 1 p.m. game against the Colts at Paul Brown Stadium. When Boling got hurt on the fifth play of Sunday's game, Whitworth moved to left guard and while Anthony Collins went to left tackle Whitworth had his way in the middle.

The Bengals frequently made Roland eligible as an extra tackle, particularly early in his tenure. Now with No. 74 back, he may not be active with fifth-round pick Tanner Hawkinson able to play left tackle as well as guard.

The Bengals have high regard for Collins's athleticism in pass protection and it would be needed against Colts outside linebacker Robert Mathis, a Pro Bowler having a Defensive Player of the Year season. Mathis, who routinely switches it up over both tackles to rush, has 15.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. He already has the NFL record for career forced fumbles off sacks with 41 and one more sack gives him the team record Dwight Freeney set nine years ago.

Collins started last Sunday in place of right tackle Andre Smith, but head coach Marvin Lewis wouldn't say why. Putting Collins at left tackle and Whitworth at guard would put the team's five best players on the field.

ANIMATED BATTLE: Marvin Lewis is a cartoon character and that's a good thing.

The Bengals head coach battles Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin next week in another AFC North scrum, but he'll co-star with him in the next episode of the animated series NFL RUSH ZONE: Guardians Unleashed.

Lewis and Tomlin make cameo animated appearances in the show that airs Wednesday night at 8:30 on Nicktoons with a number of encores throughout the week. It is also going to be on NFL Network on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Episode 303 of the third season features the Guardians teaming up with Lewis to battle evil villains Sudden Death & the Anticorians. The Guardians’ new friend Jackson, the stepson of their coach, helps the Canton Bulldogs prepare for their big game against the Mini-Steelers. Ish still struggles with not being a full Guardian, but Lewis and Tomlin remind him that being on the sidelines is not the same as being sidelined.

Aren't the Colts still a dome team, essentially?

Colts under Peyton Manning---hell yeah, but has learned from it.

Colts under Andrew Luck---they are only a dome team because they have a dome, but the way they play (even in losses) seems like they are suited for a team like the Bears.  This team is more like Stanford under Jim Harbaugh.

Bengals need to tighten them straps again, and PROTECT THIS HOUSE!!!!!!
