IIRC that is true after July, if the tag is signed before July they can still work towards a new deal.

July 15 was the deadline for a multiyear deal with Tee. The negotiating window reopens after the season.

That's why he's able to practice. He's under contract for the 2024 season but not eligible to sign a new contract until February.

They could agree to a new contract at any time, he just can't sign it yet.

August 21, 2024Aug 21 comment_1757756 ^ Teams aren't allowed to do a verbal contract in that way. By rule, they can't do anything with Tee until after the season. Plus it wouldn't be legally enforceable, so if there was an injury, they could just back out.

I am assuming what's "allowed" and what actually goes on for an NFL team are two very different things. Besides which, it doesn't have to be anything specific. Mike could drive him around on the golf cart and mention how they "see things differently now" or whatever to let him know they haven't given up on a deal. No one else can sign him either so it's really an unenforceable rule outside of some blatant tampering like the Dolphins & Brady.. & even that only came to light because of an investigation into something else entirely.
