Similar size/speed/strength attributes ... and he hasn't been given the chance to do anything since he was drafted in a game (plus they moved him around to G etc)

I think off field maturity was his problem at first, but he has probably grown up a lot now and if given the chance, I think he could be a stud.

Maturity... Maybe... I think it was more that he didn't know how to play football.. .

I thought, like others, that McDonald was starting to show something... but not sure (barring injury) how much time he was going to get on game day. This improves Shirley's chances, but even then, I think he's less than a 50-50 shot to get a spot with Rucker and Fanene's "swing" versatility.

Jennings is a guy I liked at the 'U', but he hasn't been much more than a serviceable starter. That said, I really like him as a #3. He's very fast/quick, and can cover in the slot. Given the number of snaps he'll get, it was a good trade. He's just 28, so he's got some tread left. Depending on how Clements does, he's a candidate to start next year, along with a healthy (?) Adam Jones and Trent. This is a "shot across the bow" to Ghee as well - he can't stay healthy, and he has to show something. He may be a candidate for the PS, or even get his a** cut. Rico Murray too, for that matter.

damn i liked macdonald, oh well you gotta do what you gotta do and we are hurting at CB
Not only that but what I like best about it is we are actually not only admitting it, but DOING something about it
rather than covering the shortcoming with bull shit.

I see it as a good move in two respects: like the trade and like addressing the problem even more.

So is this the "BJ kiss of death" for Jason Shirley then?

Can he do backflips too?

Bengals trade McDonald for CB Jennings
By GEOFF HOBSON
Posted 3 hours ago

For the second time in eight days Monday the Bengals made a trade without Carson Palmer in an attempt to upgrade their secondary when they received cornerback Kelly Jennings from Seattle in exchange for backup defensive tackle Clinton McDonald.

Jennings may be headed to be the third corner on third down with 44 NFL starts heading into his sixth season since the Seahawks drafted him out of Miami of Florida with the next-to-last pick in the 2006 draft’s first round.

The 5-11, 180-pound Jennings, who has missed just two games in his career, has been a regular starter in two seasons including last year when he started 14 games and had one of his two career interceptions with 13 passes defensed . The Bengals have liked what Morgan Trent has done as the third corner, but he’s also coming back from a knee injury.

Jennings wouldn't be playing the nickel, but Trent as well as starters Leon Hall and Nate Clements have a lot of experience playing the slot.

The Bengals were high on McDonald, a seventh-round pick in 2009 out of Memphis who had worked into the rotation at tackle. But with the return of tackle Pat Sims to practice for the first time this year on Sunday, there had been a severe numbers crunch on the defensive front if they decide to keep the traditional eight linemen.

Now it shapes up with Sims, Domata Peko, and Geno Atkins as the tackles, Robert Geathers, Carlos Dunlap, and Michael Johnson as the ends, and Frostee Rucker and Jon Fanene as the swingmen.

That means they can now keep 10 in the secondary. Could it shake down with five corners (Trent, Jennings, Clements, Leon Hall and Jonathan Wade) and five safeties (Chris Crocker, Reggie Nelson, Gibril Wilson, Robert Sands, Taylor Mays)?

They exchanged a seventh-round pick in 2013 with the 49ers for Mays last week. Jennings becomes the Bengals’ fourth first-rounder in the secondary, joining Hall, Clements, and Nelson.

Jennings has a rep as being a solid team player, but he was seen as undersized in Pete Carroll's regime that replaced the one that drafted him. Even so, Seattle signed him to a one-year, $1.8 million deal this past offseason with a $200,000 signing bonus. The Bengals pick up his salary.

They have done it a bunch in the past. I would guess they will use Geathers on 1st and 2nd to stop the run and then move him inside and bring Dunlap to rush on 3rd.
Playing Robert all 3 downs is playing Robert 3 downs too much. He should end up cut Sunday. Frostee is better, Fanene is better. You could rotate these two guys
during the game on 1st and 2nd. Fanene will be playing inside on 3rd down anyways..

Seahawks send Kelly Jennings to Bengals

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 29, 2011, 2:37 PM EDT

The Bengals have improved their shaky cornerback depth by acquiring cornerback Kelly Jennings from the Seahawks.

Defensive tackle Clinton McDonald was sent to the Seahawks in exchange for Jennings, the Bengals announced. McDonald has played in eight career games.

The move is reminiscent of last August 31, when the Seahawks sent cornerback Josh Wilson to the Ravens for a fifth-round pick. The Bengals can only hope the move pays off for them like it did for Baltimore, although Jennings’ play of late would indicate that’s unlikely.

Jennings was the 31st overall pick in the 2006 draft; he started 44 games for Seattle including all 14 of his regular season games last year. Walter Thurmond should take his place.
