Total rumor mill: UCLA possibly interested in Jay Gruden

Recommended Posts

FYI: ESPN radio out in Los Angeles keeps bringing up his name as someone UCLA is possibly interested in. He is far from the top of the list right now from what I have heard, but thought I would throw it out there. Being a Bruin I would be very torn if that happens, I would prefer UCLA gets someone else so I can have 2 teams with good offenses!

If the best UCLA can come up with is to snatch at a first year OC who is in third place, they deserve to be thrashed by the damn Trojans.

Are these rumors with some kind of substance, or some radio jockey talking out his ass (aka speculating)

not sure, they said the #1 choice is Chris Peterson from Boise St., but no one expects him to go anywhere, then #2 is Houston's Kevin Sumlin...Its belivable that they go after those, but doubt they will get either. Then they said Jay Gruden, its kind of hard to believe these guys came up with Grudens name out of no where, since they probably know almost nothing about the Bengals

Why would Jay give up a future shot at head coach in the NFL to move down to college? That makes no sense. Lets say that was a dream job he mentioned to someone a few years ago. I guarantee that isn't his dream now.

Jay is doing a good job of showing his stuff to the NFL, ...I don't think college is where his head is at.

My hopes are:

1. Jay doesn't want to move his family right after moving his family.
2. He doesn't want to go to the college game (UCLA job).
3. Doesn't want to go into the mess in Jacksonville (particularly since I don't believe for a second that new owner wants to stay in Jacksonville).

The new owner should do what the Packers (used to?) do and play some games in a bigger market. Buffalo does it now, too.

Play a home game in Los Angeles and see how it goes.

That's a terrible idea. Fly your team all the way across the country? Why would you intentionally do that?

Buffalo does it, in a stadium that isn't too far from their home field.

UCLA adds Jay Gruden to wish list, but Jim Mora Jr. still on top

Gruden, the Cincinnati Bengals' offensive coordinator, is among those being considered as a replacement for Rick Neuheisel. Meanwhile, Washington's Steve Sarkisian denies that he has been contacted by UCLA.

UCLA has extended its search for a head football coach, though former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora Jr. remains in the mix.

Jay Gruden, the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, is among those being considered, according to people familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak during the search.

Gruden, 44, is in his first season with the Bengals and has overseen the development of rookie quarterback Andy Dalton. The two previous seasons, Gruden was with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League, first as offensive coordinator and then as head coach.

Before that, he worked as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven seasons, when his brother, Jon, was head coach. He also played and coached in the Arena Football League.

UCLA representatives also approached University of Washington Coach Steve Sarkisian in the last week, though the school's athletic director, Scott Woodward, told the Seattle Times that UCLA had not asked for permission to speak with Sarkisian.

Asking for permission is not a Pac-12 Conference or an NCAA requirement. Woodward said he was confident Sarkisian had not spoken with UCLA, though he added, "as far as I know."

Sarkisian, a former USC assistant, told Seattle reporters he had not been contacted by UCLA.

Sarkisian, 37, signed a contract extension with Washington in January. It paid him $2.25 million in the first year and would rise to $2.85 million in 2015. The agreement demands a $2.5-million buyout if Sarkisian leaves during the first two years of the contract.

Washington is pouring money into its football facilities — a $250-million renovation of Husky Stadium and improvements to its football operations building.

Mora has been interviewed by UCLA twice. However, he has not been in contact with school officials for several days.

UCLA heads back to practice Sunday with offensive coordinator Mike Johnson guiding the team as interim head coach. The Bruins (6-7) will take on Illinois (6-6) in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl at San Francisco's AT&T Park on Dec. 31.

Athletic Director Dan Guerrero fired Rick Neuheisel as the Bruins' coach Nov. 28.
