Here's a scouting report from last spring on Collins:

Height: 5-11
Weight: 185
40: 4.52
Year: 4Sr
Jasper Collins
School: Mount Union
Position: WR
Bio: Three-year starter awarded all-Conference honors the past two seasons and named to numerous all-America teams as a senior. Totals last year included 92 receptions/1694 yards/22 TDs after 67/844/13 as a junior. Productive return specialist early in his Mount Union career.
Positive: Reliable, consistent pass catcher who gives effort in all areas of the game. Quickly releases off the line of scrimmage into routes, immediately gets to top speed, and displays sharpness into breaks. Stays low exiting routes and positions himself to make receptions. Comes back to the ball, displays terrific hand/eye coordination, and makes some acrobatic receptions in contorted positions. Displays a sense of timing with his quarterback. Easily makes the catch in stride, adjusting to the pass and losing no momentum. Catches the ball away from his frame. Gives effort blocking.
Negative: Lacks the second gear and deep burst. Hands can be suspect. Below-average blocker.
Analysis: Collins was a terrific small-school receiver and the go-to guy opponents could not stop. He's a late-round pick who will be given an opportunity as a team's fifth receiver and Collins will help his cause this summer if he produces returning punts or kicks.

He's been cut loose by 3 different teams in the past year, none of which were very strong at WR, so I stick with the assessment that he's mainly just a camp body. But he was considered to be a draft able guy by most last year, so not a complete nobody.

Uhh, there is some validity in his statement.  The TV deals would not be anything close to the amount they are without the fans watching.  The money would go away without the fans showing up in the stands.  That said I doubt a fan NFL boycott will happen anytime soon if ever.  Vick was welcomed back to the league to a sold out stadium and for the  season.

There is zero validity in his statement.  The percentage of income that ticket sales creates is nominal in the scheme of things, and, most importantly, at least 50% of the inventory is presold to corporates that want or need the exposure.  With the exception of Mikey doing a Sterling, that is crazy talk.

If fans didn't want it, corporates wouldn't buy it. In the end the fan is the customer. You need customers to continue a business...no?

You really don't understand, do you?  The NFL is the most popular sports enterprise in America.  Either they would replace the whiners in Cincinnati, or they would have your children talking about when there was a team in Cincinnati.  Your pettiness would be kicked to the curb, one way or another.

Hmmm...here I thought it was the fans that made it popular...silly me

The reason why I think Dalton's fumble was the being off the end for that game was because after that play the offense only managed 6 more first downs not caused by penalties until the game was effectively over.

That's a very interesting view of the OTA's you have there.

I can't tell you how much I agree with the last sentence

This kind of shit ruins this board. Condescending bull shit.

The bengals have a shitty clientele. As evidenced by this message board. Some of the folks with the most posts are the worst.

The message from the team as late is that they're no longer bringing in guys to be "just" a self-organizing tackling dummy.  I have to imagine the agents know this is as good a situation for an undrafted/no-name FA as they are going to find.  Most teams don't have the luxury of letting someone develop in-house for a season or two like we have, even with higher draft picks.  Desperate teams might cut this guy because he's not a big-time scoring threat and they need to put butts in seats, in other words.

You're right, though, in that he'll be lucky to make the practice squad here.

Are you telling me that if TV ratings tanked the NFL would not lose income the next TV deal? I know it isn't going to happen but your reply was wrong. Did you even read my post?

Yeah, didn't really mean tackling dummy. Just that we have 90 guys on the roster at this point in the offseason. Between the 53 man roster and the practice squad we keep about 60. This guy is probably one of the ones much nearer to #90 than #60. But I do agree that they are trying to bring in guys that at least have some potential. I think the way I've seen them put it is that they want guys that have at least 1 attribute that is potentially roster worthy. Whether it's size, speed, special teams ability, whatever. 1 thing they can kind of hang their hat on.

And I remember this guy from the pre-draft process last year. He was a bit intriguing because the last 2 mid-late round Mt. Union guys were Pierre Garcon and Cecil Shorts, both of whom greatly outperformed their draft position. I believe he put up better college stats than both of them, but just doesn't have their speed.

Just commenting on how if the Browns and Steelers (both of whom are pretty bad off at WR imo) had 90 guys they like better, he is going to have a tough time cracking our top 53.

I think you're right on the whole post, but selected this line to respond to. There is a very good reason for the fans to wait for the other shoe to drop- because it ALWAYS does.

And it's not even solely a Bengals issue. The Reds shit the bed in the playoffs consistently. The Bearcats shit the bed in the tournament consistently. You could even lump the Buckeyes in there for people who are buckeyes fans. It's rough being a fan of sports in Cincinnati. Until someone wins something (fucking anything!!!) I think the fan base will always feel that way and the energy will feel the same. It's brutal.

Sure.. I think it starts withs teams failing in some way or another.. But I think there is something to the idea that at this points the fans are actually adding to the problem.  I think it's one of the reasons "losing" cities stay that way.. There are a number of things that keep that dynamic rolling, and the fans are part of it all.

As long as the fans expect the team to fail that's exactly what they are going to get. Yet they will still act betrayed and disappointed when it happens - still haven't figured that one out. If fish made me sick every time I ate any, I sure wouldn't order it every time I went to a restaurant.

You keep repeating this "dont like it dont watch" mantra (and I get accused of repeating myself). Personally if I got bad fish when I ate it, I would send it back and ask for better fish.

Might I recommend the "Patriot" fish?
