|BlackJesus|
John Ross 4.22 (40) NFL record 5'11 188 lbs 8 3/4" Hands Overview Ross was just getting started on his way to stardom in Washington when he tore his left ACL in the spring of 2015. He had become known as a kick returner (three TDs in 2013-14) and big-play receiver in limited touches (16-208, TD in 2013; 17-371, 4 TD in 2014) before having to redshirt his third year at UW. In fact, coaches liked Ross' athleticism so much he started three games at cornerback (INT, two pass breakups) in a season he gained honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors. In his return to the field in 2016, Ross became a star, garnering second-team All-American honors and first-team All-Pac-12 accolades with 81 catches for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns (tied for second in the nation). Analysis Strengths Has home-run gear to yank the top off of defenses. Vertical speed demands respect and creates open throws underneath. Corners open hips early to turn and sprint, leaving his curl and dig routes unchallenged. Feet are fire. On verticals from the slot, sells the corner route and stems to the post with a burst for easy separation and a comfortable throwing window for the quarterback. Hands are generally solid. Plus hand-eye coordination. Natural ball-tracker who locates the deep ball early and watches it. Dangerous show-and-go open-field ability after the catch. Able to win with slants or fades near the goal line. Eludes the first tackler and can turn a short one into a long one in a heartbeat. Has enough size to work from outside or from the slot. Saw four of his eight carries go for 15-plus yards. Has returned at least one kickoff for a touchdown in each of his three years at Washington. Weaknesses Undersized with below-average play strength. Struggled to get into his routes cleanly and impact the game against the physical cornerbacks at Alabama. Weight will creep too far out over his toes at times. Tape shows occasional stumbles over nothing but turf in his routes and after the catch. Needs to do better job of working back to the throw. Has to learn to make contested catches. Will need to sharpen his short and intermediate routes to become a true three-level target. Has had a major injury to both knees. The long-term health of both knees will be a concern that has to be answered at the combine. Draft Projection Round 1 Sources Tell Us "He will get emotional on the field when he drops one or when their quarterback leaves an open deep ball short, and I've heard other scouts call it 'bad body language.' I just think he's an edgy player. He's competitive and shows it. You'll take some attitude when a guy scores as many touchdowns as he does." -- West Coast scout for NFC team NFL Comparison DeSean Jackson Bottom Line Ross is an instant-impact weapon who scored 23 touchdowns in just 112 touches. He should be able to step right in as a kick returner and a slot receiver, but teams with speed at tight end might utilize him outside to create extreme vertical stress on opposing safeties. If his knees check out as healthy, Ross is a likely first-round pick with the rare ability to become a high-volume slot receiver or a lesser-targeted, high-yield deep-ball threat. |BlackJesus|
The good - 4.22 speed - Explosive - Played for Snoop Dogg as a kid The bad - Short - Injury history - Because of speed will be underthrown by Andy
lslmustang
I thought we'd go to the defensive side of the ball... but I'm OK with this pick. Love the speed and will be a killer returner!

lslmustang
From ESPN Insiders (This pick is growing on me): Overall Football Traits Production 2 Height-Weight-Speed 2 Durability 4 Intangibles 1 1 = Exceptional2 = Above average3 = Average4 = Below average5 = Marginal Wide Receiver Specific Traits Separation Skills 2 Elite acceleration off the line and top-end speed to strike fear in CBs. Drops his weight quickly. Excellent acceleration out of cuts. Shows ability to generate separation in a small area. Really improved his stem savvy. Drives cornerbacks off the line and is able to quickly drop his weight on comebacks, hitches, etc. Lacks ideal size and play strength. Will have some struggles against quality press-man cornerbacks, as seen versus Alabama in the CFP semi-final game. Runs out of his own cleats at times and will lose balance (throwing of timing of route). Ball Skills 2 Above average focus and hand-eye coordination. Good body control when working the sidelines; knows how to make his feet die in bounds. Good job of tracking deep ball over his shoulder but needs to do a better job of high pointing. Waits for it to come down to him, which allows DB extra time to recover/contend. Inconsistent on contested-catch opportunities. Big play ability 1 Scored 24 TDs on 134 career offensive touches (TD to every 5.6 touches). Elite acceleration upfield after catch. If he catches a crease it's likely over. Good suddenness after the catch and will frequently make first defender miss with sharp cut after catch. Instincts are just adequate after the catch. Not as elusive as expected.Lacks ideal size to win jump ball but has elite vertical speed to take the top off. Also has homerun hitting ability as a return man. Four career KOR TDs. Competitiveness 2 Edgy player. Highly competitive. Will occasionally get frustrated when the QB is off-target but he holds himself to same level of accountability. Plays a lot of snaps on offense and handles KORs. Shows great stamina and competes for four quarters. Lacks size and strength to sustain as a blocker sometimes, but gives adequate effort. 1 = Exceptional2 = Above average3 = Average4 = Below average5 = Marginal Status Report Ross had 33 catches his first two seasons (2013-14) -- and he was temporarily moved to starting CB for four games in 2014 because of injuries at that position. He then missed the entire 2015 season with a knee injury before returning in 2016, which was his breakout year (Rec: 81-1,150-14.2-17. KOR: averaged 24.1 yards with 4 career TDs). Ross has become well known for breaking Chris Johnson's Combine 40 record with his 4.22 time, but he's much more than a track speedster. Ross is a first-round talent at WR and brings additional value in the return game. -March 6, 2017

UncleEarl
I like Ross, but seems like a reach at #9. If it weren't for the underwear Olympics he wouldn't even be a first round pick.

snarkster
FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!!!! Had a meeting tonight, so I just got home and fast-forwarded to the Bengals pick...FUCK! A midget slot receiver whose weight doubles when he puts on a jock and shatters when you breathe on him. May even have to open the season on the PUP and will likely be wasted this season. 4.2 don't mean shit on IR. Maybe the pizza will still be hot when they send him for it. FUCK! FUCK!!!!! lslmustang
I was watching NFL Network... they had heard the Bengal's were in love with Adams.... They liked him and I've seen several posts now that think its a great move and it helps with Red Zone production, which we certainly need improvement on. We were missing Marvin Jones speed... His injury is a shoulder so he played last year and had a great season after his knee injury... so he recovered. Hope he stays healthy and if he does, this WILL help our offense and our return game

|Bunghole|
I think at this point we're going to have to bank on a few things happening: The oline plays MUCH better this upcoming season, Cedric and Fisher rise to the occasion and their draft status and play at least above average football. The run game MUST get better. If we draft Mixon in the 2nd I'll be ecstatic. Otherwise we need to draft another quality RB for competition/change of pace. And Gio MUST return healthy. Eifert and Green HAVE to stay healthy, along with Ross. Boyd has to improve. Lafell has to stay steady. We're deep at WR now. Our CB's need to play like the first rounders they are. William Jackson hopefully starts by the end of the year. Iloka needs a big year and Dunlap, Billings and Geno need to be stout. Vontaze needs to stay off the injury report and suspension list. ALL of that happens, here comes 12-4.
