Late round/free agent fodder?

Maybe Jackie Treehorn can give us a scouting report.

Bengals meet with NFL Draft prospect from Toronto Argonauts

Some players' journeys to the NFL are very different from others, and that can be exemplified in the 2024 NFL Draft with Toronto cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers.

Stiggers played the 2023 season with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts and, despite being born in America, never played college football.

That hasn’t stopped the Cincinnati Bengals and many other NFL teams from showing interest in the former CFL star. According to Aaron Wilson. Stiggers has a visit planned with the Bengals on Wednesday.

During his freshman year of college, Stiggers ended up dropping out due to a tragedy in his family while being there on scholarship. After a couple of years away from the sport, he eventually started back up in a small indoor football league, where former CFL offensive coordinator Josh Jenkins was coaching. He convinced Stiggers to try out and was able to help him get a tryout with the Argonauts, who eventually signed him.

Despite his lack of playing experience, he played in all 16 games for the Argonauts as a rookie, recording 53 tackles and five interceptions. He was also named the CFL’s most outstanding rookie and named an East All-Star.

Following that, Stiggers got some NFL interest as he received an invite to the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he played well. He seems to have caught the attention of the NFL for sure, as he is represented on Day 3 of several large boards, such as Dane Brugler, who lists him as a sixth-round pick.

The Bengals need a backup at outside corner for 2024 and beyond, and if Stiggers is available on Day 3, that could be a value too good to pass up on. He has all the size and measurables and was able to step into a league that, while not being the NFL, is still very competitive overall.

He even had five interceptions in his debut season for the CFL, and with that being his first and only year playing real football since he graduated high school in 2020, that suggests he still has room to grow and develop as a player.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::;

Article confusing in that did they already meet with him or are they going to meet with him Wednesday?  Didn't read anything locally or on Bengals.com.

Not a Precinct dinner kind of guy but probably good for a Skyline 4-Way and a few cheese conies.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I do not like the term "develop as a player" and it was used about a couple of the OT's in a previous post.  But, as noted by others on here, the Bengals do have a lot of draft picks and can draft a couple to push borderline vets and contribute on special teams.  Or even develop on the practice squad to step up and in when ready.  We'll see.

Don't see much chance of Fuaga either.

The use of a certain word in this post always reminds me of The Three Amigos and this touching story:

A person had just delivered the eulogy of a dear friend, at the end, another person approached the podium and asked "Can I say a word?" The first person replied "Why certainly" The second person said "Plethora" to which the first person replied "Thanks, that means a lot" Now back to your regularly scheduled post

Lol..

Nice article on OT's who may be there and of interest for Round Two if the Bengals would go Byron Murphy in Round 1... which I would not mind at all.

Some familiar names here....

Patrick Paul, Houston

Javon Foster, Missouri

Jordan Morgan, Arizona

Tyler Guyton, Oklahoma

Kingsley Suamataia, BYU

All seem to have high upside but still... some "ifs", question marks and disclaimers but all have the dreaded Po-ten-tial.

Dunno... could be a Jackson Carman or Dumwad Jones.

Slim pickens 2nd aside from Paul

.I want an OT in Rd1..

The rest be damned.😎

Has any CFL player signed by the Bengals been productive?

To many ? about him.

Maybe another Sheldon or Carman.

Too Risky..

Sheldon was a 4th rounder. Not a major toss of dice. Boom or bust. Carman was a bad pick in that he was a natural LT and they not only used him too early, they put him at a position he had no business (or experience) playing. Both, however, were above average at the collegiate level.

A flub-up on a night out on the town does not discount what he did on the field at Texas. There may be better “value” picks at NT later on, but for a true description of what the Bengals need as a pure NT, he is it.

The Bengals met with him…he’s been vetted. If they suspected a chronic issue, then that is one matter.

Way out on that limb there..😊

Hey, more than 10 players have been media mocked to the Bengals at 18 in the last week or two. So I could have easily said Bowers, Fashanu, Barton, Thomas, Mitchell, Wiggins, Newton..,

If Murphy happens to be there in round one (not likely) you have to take him and go

OT in round two.

If one of the aforementioned do not slide or you don't trade up for one who does (would love that)

then one of the guys mentioned, perhaps.

The rap on Paul is he is a bit older than the other

Ancient Bengals History...

In the 1977 Draft Paul Brown used a 4th round draft pick for Georgia ORT Mike Wilson who would have gone

in the first round if he had not already signed a contract with Toronto in the CFL.

He played there a year before coming to the Bengals to play ORT for many years overlooked because he

played next to ORG Max Montoya and he was the book end for young OLT Anthony Munoz.

He was one of my favorite Bengals ever.  Mike Wilson was overlooked and underrated.

For sure… forgot he’d played in Canada. Very good player.

Off the top of my head, Andrew Hawkins played in Canada too. Always liked him.

There are always certain players who always shoot up the boards in the last week before the draft, as evaluators realize they were either previously slotted too low, or valued way more by teams than draft evaluators had anticipated.

Some of those players that I predict will fit that cycle this time around include:

- Graham Barton (C/G)

- Darius Robinson (DE/DT)

- Adonai Mitchell (WR)

- Roman Wilson (WR)

- Maason Smith (DT)

- Patrick Paul (OT)

* Ironically the Bengals have shown interest in all of them and could draft any of them in Rd 1 or 2.

Thanks - good list.

From what I’ve read and heard from draft weenies, sounds like Barton is definitely going in round one. Robinson likely as well. Mitchell is definitely intriguing with his size and speed and big-play ability.

Love Roman Wilson and Mason Smith would hit a need for sure. A little wary re Patrick Paul but depending in what happens in round one, could see it on day 2.

It is strange to think that, at one time, players often made more money in the CFL than in the NFL. Today, the annual team salary cap in the CFL is around $6M - for the whole team!

It’s not so much what he did that’s causing the concern, it’s when he did it. Piss poor judgement is not the endearing quality NFL teams are looking for.

Yes, we need line help on both sides of the ball, but there seems to be more DT value than OT on Day Two. Of course there is much more 3T value rather than NT, which is Cincinnati's biggest hole on defense. But we need to grab an OT while we have a pick as high as 18. That may not happen again for years.

There are a lot of 7 round media mock drafts, but I always pay special attention to the Dane Brugler one in The Athletic. Yeah, these things are always a crapshoot, but The Beast is just so detailed. Here is what he came up with for Cincinnati:

1 (18). Byron Murphy II, DT, Texas
2 (49). Cooper Beebe, G, Kansas State
3 (80). Theo Johnson, TE, Penn State
3 (97). D.J. James, CB, Auburn
4 (115). T’Vondre Sweat, DT, Texas
5 (149). Anthony Gould, WR, Oregon State
6 (194). Erick All, TE, Iowa
6 (214). Giovanni Manu, OT, British Columbia (Can.)
7 (224). Sam Hartman, QB, Wake Forest
7 (237). Ryan Rehkow, P, BYU
