I want to see this Oline improve beyond mediocrity.....

Drafting JC Lathem will solidify the pass rush over time.

Alot of OTs could do that in this draft.

Fuaga brings a different type than  that.

He's a mauler in the he trenches.

With  him at RT your set.

Put him at guard and he improves the interior immensely.

This is the guy who could make the one dramatic impact on our future Oline.

Will he be there?

He just rushed for 1000 yards with 50 catches. He had the 10th most runs of over 10 yards.

Most runners with his amount of carries would exceed 1k.

He caught passes instead of blocking in blitzes for minimal gains

He's going down hill.

Why wait for it?

Draft an RB with fresh legs and a desire to reap the benefits of a first contract.

If you are not taking a tackle in the top 10 you are getting a guy that likely isn't going to be good at both. The question for me is which is easier to pick up and learn if you have all te athletic skills, run blocking or pass blocking?

Starting to build my roster. This is where i have landed

QB Burrow 29 Browning 24 McCarron 24 UDFA
RB Mixon 25 Brown 27 Draft Pick Johnson Evans 25 UDFA

At RB

1-Mixon, cut in March but re-signed a few weeks later cuts a couple of million off his contract, his last year

2-Brown may be the future and now in a rotational role

3-Mid round draft pick, not before round 4

4-Ty Johnson-I have been interested in him for years. Great elusive rating, kick return experience, and special teams tackles, just 27 and played for our assistant QBs coach @ Maryland. Should be on a vet min deal

5-Evans who is a free agent next year

6-UDFA Flyer

If you wanted to replace Mixon with Zach Moss I wouldn't kick you out of bed for eating crackers but I just don't think he is an obvious upgrade.

(As for QB Burrow-Browning-McCarron after he plays at Battlehawks...he wants to coach eventually and I think you put him in the pipeline and then I love Tua's brother fro the PS QB)

I suspect that any of Guyton, Lathem, Mims or Fuaga could step in and play at least as well as Jonah initially and then much better down the road. Lathem and Fuaga are probably better than Jonah already.

Latham is too slow imo. He looks like another of Alabama's maxed out players, sort of like Evan Neal or Chase Warmack. Guys like TJ Watt or Myles Garrett would eat Latham for breakfast.

Who doesn't get eaten up by Watt and Garrett?

Someone quicker who can stay in front of them. The tackle may get overpowered by them but that takes longer than just dipping a shoulder. Lose slow, not quick.

Lathem isn't slow.

4.85 forty.

Played DE before switching to Oline.

The 20 extra lbs he put in this year was considered "good weight"

I think he has more potential than Dewand Jones ( barely)..

He be a good fit at RT imo.

Question...

What is our oline better at .

Run or Pass ?

What if they're actually shit tier at both but it's easier to hide when pass blocking?

https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/most-sacks-allowed-by-team-in-the-last-5-years

They're ranked 6th worst in sacks allowed over the last 5 seasons.  If they're better at pass blocking they must be one of the worst run blocking teams in history.

This is like me claiming I'm a better doctor when removing a gall bladder vs doing open heart surgery.

One may be easier than the other but either way I'm not actually a doctor and the patient is going to die.

All the Glory goes to Frank Pollack.

What difference has he made here?

Still waiting .😎

Well, he turned Volson into someone they're willing to let start.  Outside of Carman I don't think he's had an OL draft pick higher than the 4th round?  Ketchup Whisperer had more to do with Jonah and with him gone the rest of the OL are free agent signings.

I think it has more to do with a pass-happy scheme and terrible scouting than Pollack.

Possibly .

Whenever a coach's unit keeps

underperforming it gets to that "cut ties" mode regardless of the situation and excuses..

Oh I don't much care if they fire him but I don't expect it to change anything until they get someone competent making OL draft picks.

Real interested in seeing how they handle the RT situation.

As I..

Do they sign the vet RT for a 1yr  deal?

More???

I want a big mauler either inside or out.

I don't know what glass eating techniques Pollack  teaches but it ain't workin....

This Oline would be ranked in the bottom 5 as a passive unit.

So the Michigan guys who abused Latham are better than Watt and Garrett? Maybe we should pick them then.

Yeah.

Latham, to me, is way too inconsistent to spend a top 20 pick on.

Honestly, I think most years, the majority of these guys are 2nd round picks at best.

Latham is big and strong, no argument there. But he'll get his QB hit a lot in the NFL. Dawand Jones was a vastly better college player than Latham. Jones allowed zero sacks and zero QB hits his final college season on 400 pass blocking snaps. Texas also overran Bama's O-line last year though that was more Proctor than Latham.

  • 2 weeks later...

None of the high level guys look to be getting franchised. The Market at FA RB should be interesting. I assume we wisely sit out the top end and sign a lower end veteran or just cut and re-sign Mixon. It would be a surprise to see him back at that number not to see him back.
