  2. Why even run the play? Spot the ball at the 30 and be done with it. At this point it's only an excuse to air 2-3 extra ad breaks while they sort out their latest goof shit.

  5. It is. But in the context of onside kick--and the kick team has to wait on their designated yard line until the ball is kicked--it renders the chances of a successful onside basically nil. And, if the kick doesn't make it to the 20, it's an auto placement on the 40 for the receiving team. I have been trying to get my head around just what the options are going to be for the kicking team--on any kicks. I suppose that one (besides booming it out of the back of the endzone) is to squib it just far enough to get past the 20--forcing a return. Maybe there is a metric for how many times returners might bobble a squib...dunno. This will be a challenge for someone like McPherson, who may or may not have accuracy skills to place things that exactly. Frankly, not certain who does. On to putt putt!

  7. We leave Fuaga and Murphy on the board to take Thomas? Fuck that, we can get a solid WR Day 2. If they deal Tee (which I truly doubt) there should be a late day one or an extra Day 2 to pick one up.

  8. Think the big difference is experience, that same CB coming from Auburn is probably more ready for the pro game. How big a deal that is to the team depends on how much they trust their coaches. If they think the OL coach has made a 4th round pick into a starting LG, maybe they don't feel pressed to take that OT in the first 2 rounds. If on the other hand they think he's made Pro Bowl vets look like 4th round picks, well,. that's a bigger problem when he's also your only dedicated OL scout and keeps mumbling to himself about wide zones and ketchup. To put it bluntly I'm going to be both a little surprised and more than a little relieved if they do manage to draft a good long-term RT. At this point I have to hope they're due for one at random, not so much by being more capable.

  9. Im sure they will use the clock review consistently and not as another means to hand teams do-overs when they don't like the outcome of a play.

  10. Like most teams, the Bengals usually draft players that they have had a chance to meet with, interview, or have an official visit with. Because of that, it's a good barometer to guess who may be a future Bengal in a month. So here is a thread to discuss any of the players that the Bengals have met with. * If there's a guy missing from the first list below then add them to the thread as well.

  11. By Mike Florio Published March 26, 2024 01:03 PM A week ago, we thought it would be easy to spot a violation of the inevitable hip-drop tackle ban. Now? We don’t know what to think. The confusion started on Monday. After the rule was passed, we posted a story with a photo of Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson hip-drop tackling Ravens tight end Mark Andrews. The Bengals contacted us to point out that, under the rule as written, the Wilson tackle would not have been a violation. Now, the NFL informs PFT that the Wilson tackle would have been a violation — even though it was not included in the reel of violations displayed at Monday’s press conference regarding the new rule. So, basically, we don’t know what to think at this point. The rule contains multiple elements. First, the defensive player grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms. Second, the defensive player unweights himself “by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body.” Third, the defensive player lands on and traps the runner’s leg(s), at or below the knee. On Monday, Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay told reporters that the NFL wants a flag to be thrown only if the officials see all elements of the foul in real time. That won’t be easy to do, especially with most violations happening in the cluster of legs, arms, and torsos that is the tackle box. The bulk of the enforcement apparently will come from the NFL imposing discipline after the fact, with the players appealing to one of the two hearing officers, Derrick Brooks and James Thrash. The practical problem, as it relates to the integrity of the game, is that enforcement via penalties will become hopelessly inconsistent. And it will become another foul that either will or won’t be called in a key moment of a key game, fueling the potential perception that the fix is in. Why even make it a penalty? Why not just make it something for which players are fined? Instead of accepting the “shit happens” defense to the inability of officials to affirmatively see all elements of the violation as they happen, defer the entire enforcement mechanism to league-office discipline. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/cincinnati-bengals

  13. No more squib kicks either. If the ball hits the ground short of the opposing 20, receiving team takes possession in an advantageous position. Some teams will just blast it through the endzone and avoid returns, conceding better field position than currently. For kicking teams who want to put the ball into play, I'd guess they will look for low, spinning kicks that stay inbounds and avoid the returner. If it takes him a second to secure the ball after it hits the ground, that should be good for the coverage team. The receiving team can use up to 2 returners behind their blockers so if a kicking team proves it can pull off low, spinning kicks, the counter might be to put an extra returner on the field and fair catch as much as possible.

  15. With a Tee extension it's all about the numbers. I would gladly want him back at 4 yrs 80 million (20 per). But if he wants 25 or more, then we might as well pay Justin Jefferson 32.

  20. The Wild Card route is always iffy. Not only overall record factored in, but also season record vs other WC claimants. LA and ATL are likely (again) division winners. The Central is more dicey. The Wild Cards will come from teams good enough to win their divisions, but have LA and ATL in them (AZ and PHL). That leaves two spots for the likes of SF, NYM, CHC (or STL), and the Reds. There are also “rebound” teams such as MIA, SEA and SD. Getting off to a good start may be key. They start off with 3 vs PHL, 3 vs NYM, and end the month with 3 against SEA, 4 against PHL and 2 against SD. Gotta make hay against the WC contenders early, so as get the head-to-head lead down

  24. The Reds were in the thick of it last year until a few of the rookies hit the rookie wall, and pitching injuries piled on. They had a real shot at the wild card until the very last couple of games, even with the bad start they had. If they can stay relatively healthy I expect a post season birth.

  27. Of course the term "Season Opener" here could mean the first Friday Night game of the season, not necessarily the first game of the entire season. But even if that were the case and this game were mid-season, I doubt the league would make teams fly to Brazil for a Friday game, taking two days' rest off the table in a game the NFL wants to use to showcase their product and expand into a new market. The only way I see CFT-PHI as still being Brazil is if both got a bye the week prior.... long but not impossible odds. In spite of all of that, I view this announcement as taking CFT-PHI out of Brazil and will find new International pairings as a result.

  29. It appears silent as to onside kicks. However, in reference to ANY kickoffs: Any kick that hits short of the landing zone – treated like kickoff out of bounds and ball spotted at B40 yard line; play would be blown dead as soon as kick lands short of the landing zone

  32. Thanks for the clarification, I clearly misunderstood and assumed play clock. It frustrated me to no end how guys like Brady seemed to always get "the benefit of doubt" (i.e. a couple extra seconds) during critical parts of the game...guess nothing has changed for the NFL chosen few in that regard.

  36. Banning the hip drop tackle benefits teams that have big RBs, who now will be very hard to bring down from behind. Some team is going to put an athletic 320 lb DT at RB and take advantage of this rule. Give me T'Vondre Sweat running up the middle!

  37. The Bengals are built for the 100 yd dash and to beat the Chiefs and Bills. The others in the AFC North are "high jumpers" built to play each other. If they adapted the Bengals to counter AFC North teams they would then lose their ability to be high flying when it matters in January.

  40. I would like to say it amazes me how anyone could still believe what their party tells them to believe, on either side of the isle, when the data is readily available, but it doesn't. Because yes, it's poor white people that are getting most of the government benefits, but you never hear people complain about them. Just the minorities. And sure Democrats say a lot and do only so much, but I'm still voting for that over a party that denies reality and actively lies to their base in order to use them for political violence to achieve their goals of staying in power. Ask the majority of their base and they still will tell you that the election was stolen. They believe that because Dear Leader continues to lie to them. They believe him in spite of the evidence otherwise, in spite of them saying one thing in public and saying something very different when they brought it to court. That's cult like behavior. And then lets not get into one of Trump's henchmen he surrounded himself with, actively calling for murdering members of Congress. You can say what you want to say about Biden, but he doesn't have people around him calling for the murder of Republicans. There are a lot of things I don't care about when it comes to Biden, but this will not be a difficult choice for me. I'm voting against the wanna be dictator and his thugs.
