Bengals to get 3rd and 6th round comp picks?

Recommended Posts

A guy on KFFL.com does a thing every year where he goes through all of the FA signings in the previous season and predicts the compensatroy picks about a month before the NFL officially releases them. He is pretty accurate. Anyway he predicts that the Bengals will recieve 3rd and a 6th round comp picks in this years draft.

Basically, we get a 3rd round pick for Justin Smith and a 6th round pick for Landon Johnson. The Antwan Odom signing cancelled out the loss of Madieu Williams because they recieved similar sized contracts. We would have recieved a 4th round pick for Madieu if we didnt sign Odom.

I've read this guy's projections the past few years and he's got a pretty decent track record. He's had some misses (Patrick Kearney comes to mind) but he's been very accurate as far as the Bengals have been concerned. I'd feel better if he didn't hedge himself with the 3rd round compensatory pick possibly being a 4th rounder.
These would all be at the end of a particular round, correct?

If so, what is the normal order of the ones receiving picks (e.g. Pissburgh, Cincinnati, etc.)?
It's in Adam's KFFL post, but the order for the comp picks is the value of the players lost so Faneca comes ahead of Smith.

I've been following his projections for several years and Adam does a great job of deducing the secret formula.

I think the Landon Johnson pick will onlt be a 7th rounder. He got a good contract ($10+ million), but he didn't play very much.

And I don't see any way we don't get a third for Justin based on his contract and level of play.

Looks like we might get a 7 too, or maybe two seven's instead of the 6.
So would an extra 1st. Could add a lot of talent to both sides of the ball with that many picks in the first 3 rounds.
How about a compensatory third-rounder AND a first-rounder/early second-rounder obtained by trading Chad? Five picks in the top 100 would be really, really nice. We could fill most of our needs with just those picks (OT, C, RB, LB/DE, CB).
No way in hell they get a third for Bustin Smith.... fourth round and feel lucky they got that plus the fact his ass isnt here anymore.
do you understand how the formula works? Simply thinking Justin was a bust doesn't factor into the formula. In fact, nothing he did as a Bengal is important.

right, so when someone who does this on a yearly basis and has a pretty damn good track record at it say's we'll get a 3rd, what compels you to say "they're's no way in hell we're getting one"?
March 23: During the Monday afternoon session of the meetings, the NFL usually releases the compensatory draft picks.

With the Bengals having a net loss of five players in 2008 unrestricted free agency (Justin Smith, Madieu Williams, Landon Johnson, Bryan Robinson and Alex Stepanovich) on top of signing Antwan Odom, the Bengals could get as many as the maximum of four.

Best-case scenario? A third-rounder, sixth-rounder and two seventh-rounders. Worst case? A fourth and a seventh.

It all depends on a byzantine formula that takes into consideration playing time, pay and postseason awards. Because Smith signed such a big deal, all indications are the Bengals will get a third-rounder for him.

It would be a bit fitting they would get a compensatory for Johnson even if it is just a sixth. The Bengals took him with the extra third-rounder (No. 96 in 2004) they got for losing Takeo Spikes in 2003.
4 comp picks? If they think they could get that many, then they shouldn't be signing anymore FAs. That would be 11 new faces fighting for roster spots and if they trade Chad it could be up to 13.

No way to do I go for FA role players like FB with that many picks.

I think you can sign a FB with a low cap value and always cut him in camp if need be.

Draft picks dont necessarily mean that a whole will be filled. Really outside of your first round pick you cant really count on a guy to step in and start. With that being said this season I think we will have two rookies starting on our O-line, which is a big concern, but should go along way to building a solid O-line for the future.
