The Skinny: The Bengals confirmed what we already knew after watching wide receiver Laveranues Coles in his one season with the team, that's there's little left in his tank, and released him on Thursday. That re-opened the door to thoughts of Terrell Owens becoming a Bengal and if this was the T.O. of 2002, 2003 or 2004 or even 2007 it would be an intriguing idea even with the attitude problem. The last two seasons have been his worst two on a per game basis in a decade (and yes some of it last season was due to playing in a poor offense with poor quarterbacks), but at age 36 it would also suggest his skills may be slipping enough that it's not worth it to put up with his antics.

Oh Skinny, the point isn't are you getting the TO that was a legit #1 a few years ago, the point is are you getting a player that can be better than what you had? Which is Coles and TJ.

T.O. in Cincy…..hype or real?
March 6th, 2010 | Bengals, NFL

I've heard all the rumors of WR Terrell Owens coming to Cincinnati and even though it may be true, I'm not a big fan of it. Is T.O. the type of WR that this offense needs to improve its passing game? Yes. He is tall, he can still run, although not as fast as he once was, and he will take coverage away WR Chad Ocho Cinco. In my mind, T.O. is a player you get on a one year deal, just like the Buffalo Bills did last season. So, if the Bengals did sign him, and the terms are in their favor, I can understand why they would do it from a "football" standpoint. But if they sign T.O. or any other aging WR, they are essentially admitting that they missed on their two 2008 draft picks at the WR position, Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell. Last years signing of WR Laveranues Coles was a mistake and it stunted the growth of the Bengals young WRs in 2009. Caldwell made some big catches early on, but didn't have the year that he should have had. And Simpson was barely active during games. Signing a guy like WR Brandon Marshall would have a whole different meaning. Marshall is one of the top WR's in football and would be the clear No 1, not a rented player. The Bengals have some options, but not many in the unrestricted free agent market. WR Antonio Bryant is an option in Cincinnati. He is kinda like Chad in that he runs tough routes and can beat a DB one on one. I think Antonio is more of a volatile player than Chad, so that may scare teams away. But on the field, Antonio can still go get it. All of these guys have issues, just depends on which guy the Bengals can handle the best. I still say go for Marshall, he is the best of the group and would be more than a one year player. The Broncos may be willing to deal him for less than a 1st round pick if the Seahawks don't sign him. So the Bengals need to be patient and not bid against themselves. Teams that "needed" WRs already made moves in that area, Ravens, Lions, and Houston. I personally know that the K.C. Chiefs were looking at one of the WRs that just signed, but will they make a move for T.O.? Also keep in mind that the price for all of these guys will start to come down with each passing day. Teams will see that agents are bluffing when they say that other teams are interested, and players will start to get nervous so they will ask agents to take the deal that's on the table.

I'm good with the TO signing but I did hear a concerning thought on the radio the other day by I think Thornton.

As JT put it, if TO signs with the Bengals, Drew Rosenhaus basically has the Bengals over a barrel next offseason as he represents the Bengals top two WR's. Owens would likely only be on a 1yr deal and Chad would be going into the last year of his contract.
Which is another reason that we will still likely draft a WR high even if we get T.O.

The Cincinatti Bengals and free agent WR Terrell Owens have a deal in place to make Carson Palmer a very happy QB with T.O and Ocho Cinco as targets. Owens is lobbying for a three year deal when the Bengals are offering a one year deal but an agreement on money has been agreed upon.

Fuck that guy.. He is TOx2 as far as being a drama queen.. He also has substance abuse problems and is one misstep away from being suspended (so the grape vine chirps). He is also going to cost an arm and a leg. If we were to take him on at the cost of draft picks it would be a long term marriage that I don't think the baggage of would be worth it.

Get a solid pro to help bridge the gap while you mold the kind of player you want at that position through the draft.. If he were such an obvious choice to have on your team, he would not be available right now in the first place.

Wow.

If this is true.. I'm actually.. sort of.. excited.

My thoughts on TO pretty much parallel AkiliMVP to a T.

But.

Giving Carson two potential HOFers (HOF head cases at that) to throw to? Seriously?

Fuck, make it happen, and bring me September in a hurry.

Yes. This is good news IF it is true. I don't want to sound greedy, but we need a quality TE next. Let's move on and sign a quality TE as soon as possible.

Then I want Zimmer to grab anyone he is interested in to keep up with the AFCN.

Can you imagine if we got both TO and Marshall? I know its extremely unlikely, but...think of the productivity of the passing game next season, coupled with an already strong running game!
Cedric would have many long runs if we had Chad, TO, and Marshall all on the field at the same time. He could easily get 5+ yards a crack.

And it could happen!

The same post was probably made a couple years ago with Ced's name plugged in instead of T.O....... :0stfu:

If we can get him in here with a 2 year contract, we would be stupid not to sign him unless he wants a ridiculous amount of money. We need a new definition of ridiculous money after we brought Coles in last season for the price tag he came with. Thank god for the uncapped season that let us release him so easily.

Nothing happening today between T.O. and Bengals
Posted by Mike Florio on March 7, 2010 12:45 PM ET

As rumors of the Bengals pursuing receiver Terrell Owens intensify (especially in light of the express approval supplied by the man who'd step into the cross hairs for T.O.'s criticism), we're told that nothing will be happening today.

Come Monday, though, it's possible that activity will increase between the Bengals and Owens -- and possibly other teams.

It's unknown whether any other team currently is pursuing Owens. As of Friday morning, two unnamed teams were interested. One was the Bengals; the other possibly was the Ravens.

If so, then there's only one. Unless someone else has emerged.

Receiver Chad Ochocinco has been lobbying the team to sign Owens since Super Bowl week. Multiple reports suggested the Bengals weren't interested, but the OCNN has yet to issue a final report on the matter.

It could be that the Bengals were feigning a lack of interest in order to soften up Owens' expectations. With Ochocinco due to earn a base salary of $5 million in 2010, the Bengals likely won't be inclined to pay T.O. a penny more -- if they're even willing to pay him $5 million.

Cutting Coles saved $4.5 million. I wouldn't pay him a penny more than that. Preferably, I'd give him $4 million with performance incentives.
