Talks between the Cincinnati Bengals and coach Marvin Lewis hit a significant snag by midday Tuesday, a team source said.

Lewis' contract expires after the season. The two sides met Monday and twice Tuesday morning.

After one of the meetings, a person involved said he expected a deal to get done in the next 24 hours. However, in subsequent meetings, the two sides could not come to an agreement on how the franchise should be run.

By Ian Preuth and Dennis Janson
CINCINNATI - Hours after reports surfaced that Marvin Lewis would return to the sidelines for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011, now they're appears to be a new development.

Sources tell Channel 9 Sports Anchor Dennis Janson that Lewis is mystified by reports that he's leaning toward staying in Cincinnati. "Not even close. Nothing is settled," Lewis said.

Lewis wants to remain in Cincinnati, but will not unless he has control. He wants more power to run the team which includes the ability to reprimand players.

Adam Schefter from ESPN, who earlier reported that Lewis and the Bengals were expected to work out their differences and reach an agreement within the next 24 hours, is now saying talks have broke off for the day and Lewis was seen leaving the complex. Schefter continued to say that the two sides could not agree on the team's direction and that Lewis' future in Cincinnati is now in serious jeopardy.

The team's website says despite reports, there was no agreement reached Tuesday and that the two sides had met twice.

9 News was told Lewis left the complex but is expected to return so the two sides can once again re-convene.

The longer this goes could mean the organization is preparing to move on without the coach who returned them to the postseason.

The reigning NFL Coach of the Year whose contract expired after Sunday's 13-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens has told Bengals owner Mike Brown what needs to change for him to stay in Cincinnati where he's had two winning records in eight seasons.

Lewis, one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL has told Brown he would like to change how the organization operates, including more control over roster decisions and upgrades to the team's personnel department and practice facilities which includes a covered field. Having an indoor practice facility becomes even more important if the league moves to an 18 game regular season schedule.

Lewis has also been on the coaching staffs of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens so he knows what it takes to build a winning organization. He was the Ravens defensive coordinator when the team won the Super Bowl in 2000.

The team held its annual end of season meeting on Monday, but nothing concrete was announced to the media, leaving many to believe the two sides were still working out differences.

"I think he wants to be back, and I think everybody wants him back," safety Chris Crocker said on Monday. "But it's going to be a decision between him and ownership. One thing is when you lose and you don't have a good season, something changes. You don't know what's going to change."

Cincinnati completed its worst season under Lewis in 2010, finishing with a 4-12 record which has earned them the fourth pick in April's draft. The Bengals won the AFC North in 2009 but failed to live up to expectations in 2010 and lost 10 straight games during one stretch.

Many people believe the team should and Lewis should go their separate ways and blow the whole thing up and make sweeping changes to the coaching staff and roster. Brown, who is known for not making drastic changes, would not meet the demands of Lewis' predecessors. Lewis has had the most success while Mike Brown has owned the team and any other coach who would potentially take over would most likely not have as much control as Lewis has had since he took over in 2003.
