Bengals softening stance on Palmer? Raiders pushing ‘hard’ for Palmer trade

money stolen? he doesn't have to pay him the money. how do you figure he stole it?
He stole it by accepting a signing bonus, which is basically funds provided to him in advance of him fulfilling his contract, with the expectation that the contract will be fulfilled.

Nobody seems to take into account a signing bonus given to a player, when having a debate similar to this.

I'd still like to see Mike Brown sure Palmer for a portion of his signing bonus.

Signing bonus <> completion bonus, does not require fulfillment of contract, get your legalese up, bro.

You guys are some pro-corporation bastards. I hate all of you big oil republicans.

Palmer represents the little guy, he embodies everyone who wants to stick it to the man, but can't.

I love Carson more than life itself.

I loved Palmer as well, but fact of the matter is when you accept a signing bonus, it is with the assumption that you are going to fulfill your contract.

Why do you think Michael VIck owes the Falcons millions of dollars?

I'm sure there are plenty of other examples out there, but that's one that I can think of off the top of my head.

Pro-corporation applies here. Bengals = big evil corporation, CP = everyday Joe getting boned by the man, NFL revenue sharing = bailout even when soP runs the Bengals into the ground, do the players (the middle class) get bail outs? No, they get cut. See Jordan Palmer.

Keep it up, loyal corporate lobbyists.

For every one of those examples, I can cite 100 examples where a player did not complete the contract but kept the entire bonus. it is a SIGNING bonus, a premium for simply putting your name on the line. Accounting tactics are the reason for the spreading. What Vick did to void his contract terms were criminal acts, CP is not breaking laws and shit.

You just got sizzerved.

Completion bonus <> signing bonus.

Also, why the hell isn't soP suing every dude he cut for their signing bonus back? Why isn't he suing Coles for his bonus? Cause it's a signing bonus.

Don't you think soP would sue CP if he could? That means he can't.

BOOM. ROASTED!

Um, tell me what crimes CP did that equals Vick and Jamarcus.
What crime did Russell commit as a member of the Raiders besides sucking?

BTW, I see no reason to trade Carson for a anything other than a 2nd rounder. I would rather see Mike spend the money on current proven players or FAs then let Carson skip town for a pick that probably won't help the club for a year or two.

This point lacks logical merit. The signing bonus is to protect the player from career ending injury or losing the ability to play. Coles was planning on returning to the Bengals so there is no way Mike could ask for the bonus back.

Most signing bonuses have language written in them i.e. conduct clause both on and off the field that allows the owner to recoup some of the cost if terms of the contract are violated. Vick's violation was obvious.

Russell's payments were in the form of salary advances (they were guaranteed) so the only angle I can see from them is he violated team conduct rules by not TRYING. The Raiders hired specialists and older veterans to try and get this guy's act straight but most of them threw up their hands and told management the guy didn't give a rat's ass. The Raiders hired John Lucas as his life coach and that didn't work. Lucas even brought in Charles Barkley to try and help and even Barkley couldn't get the guy to do shit. Still, that one would be hard to actually prove.

The Bengals certainly have a case against Palmer if he DEMANDS a trade. As far as I know, Carson has NOT demanded a trade. He has said he is no longer willing to play for the Bengals and the Bengals COULD trade him or he will just retire. The other point is if Brown tried to get the bonus back, Carson could just return and force Mike's hand. Brown would have to either pay Carson his salary and welcome him back to the team (not likely), trade him or cut him. It really is the only card Carson has.

Ah I see so agents never say that kind of stuff to get their clients a new deal? Never in the history of the NFL has that happened? Good to know.

Not only did his Agent say it, but he said it too.

Forget trade deadline

By: Dennis Janson
CINCINNATI - In recent days, the scatter gun guys at the .coms, have been peppering their blogs with suppositions about possible Carson Palmer trades to this team or that.

A long-time associate of the former Bengals quarterback tells me that Palmer, for one, holds out no hope whatsoever of such an eventuality coming to pass.

"Mike will never give in," Palmer said as he went on to talk about hypotheticals. "If I don't play again, I don't. If I do, I do. I never got the opportunity to do what I could have done but I've had an opportunity most people never get."

He added, "I'm loving life, spending time with my kids, working on some real estate projects. Don't feel sorry for me."

Play for a West Coast team? You're probably right. Play for a team with a badass defense, an out of this world receiver focused on football, a great tight end, a running game, and a schedule hand picked to send you into the playoffs? You had that opportunity.

I don't feel sorry for people with tens of millions of dollars, who make informed decisions about their own lives. I can't imagine anyone should.
