Dautcom08
Chad Johnson footwork with even more insane speed. This blows any defense wide open with an offense already lining AJ and Eifert up. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
cincity
I must admit though... IF this line can be decent... This offense just got soooooo much more dangerous!

Let's go If you think about it this helps pass protection probably better than any single player..teams can only have 7 in the box max. No way they single cover AJ and Ross and now efiert in the seam vs less pollution is scary also. I guess it open the run game also, you play 2 deeps safeties fuck it run the ball. Could be really interesting.

That might be the best NFL comparison for Ross' game. However, don't forget that Chad also had Chad Johnson levels of work ethic. He lost his way in the later years, but before he changed his name, he was at the stadium more than Marvin. Chad was also a slight guy. He was a taller 6'2" and had a real talent for high pointing the ball. Ross isn't going to have that, but at 5'11" he's not going to be shorter than 90% of NFL corners. Both guys predicated their game on speed. Ross shows that same short area burst and sideline control. From interviews, he seems MUCH smarter, so hopefully he will commit himself to learning the craft, and have Ocho's luck when it comes to durability. Inigo Montoya
I will stay positive tonight about Ross. Obviously, his potential is scary just based off speed alone. Defenses will have to account for him and he is a legit deep threat anywhere he lines up. He can also contribute in the return game, which is a nice bonus. From everything I've read, Ross is a stand up guy and a hard worker. He wants to be a great player and he has shown perseverance to come back from his injuries to have the breakout year he had last season. He is not considered to be a diva which makes him a good fit alongside AJ. Giving Dalton another weapon can only help him, IMO.
New Jersey Bengal
Ross is of high character and is above all a football player not a track star. If he can stay healthy which I think he will he will wind up being a very good pick. You can look at all the measurables that you want but you cannot quantify heart

He was definitely a consensus 1st round pick before the combine. Here are some examples: Tony Pauline: Quote Draft Analyst has learned Washington receiver John Ross, stamped as a unanimous first round pick, will undergo surgery to repair an injured labrum in his shoulder soon after the combine. http://draftanalyst.com/breaking-receiver-john-ross-scheduled-post-combine-surgery Mock Draft from Matt Miller in December with Ross going #14 overall and #2 receiver: Quote 1 Cleveland Browns Mitch Trubisky, QB North Carolina 2 San Francisco 49ers Myles Garrett, DE Texas A&M 3 Jacksonville Jaguars Jonathan Allen, DL Alabama 4 Chicago Bears Jabrill Peppers, S Michigan 5 New York Jets Leonard Fournette, RB LSU 6 Cincinnati Bengals Mike Williams, WR Clemson 7 Tennessee Titans (from LA) Malik McDowell, DL Michigan State 8 Carolina Panthers Teez Tabor, CB Florida 9 Green Bay Packers Dalvin Cook, RB Florida State 10 Arizona Cardinals Cam Robinson, OL Alabama 11 Indianapolis Colts Reuben Foster, LB Alabama 12 New Orleans Saints Marshon Lattimore, CB Ohio State 13 San Diego Chargers Jamal Adams, S LSU 14 Tennessee Titans John Ross, WR Washington 15 Cleveland Browns (from PHI) Derek Barnett, DE Tennessee http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2678557-2017-nfl-mock-draft-post-week-12-1st-round-predictions-for-all-prospects This article from December mentions him as a first-rounder: Quote Though week ten of college football certainly did not have the marquee match ups that previous weeks have had, there were still a bevy of impressive performances at many different positions. Of all the impressive performances, none were quite as stunning as Washington wide receiver John Ross and his utter dismantling of the California defense. John Ross does not have prototypical size for a number one wide receiver, standing at only 5-10 and 190 pounds. However, his speed is so spellbinding that it overwhelms defenses. Against California, Ross racked up six catches for over two hundred yards and three touchdowns. Somehow more impressive stat line is the fact that Ross was forced to adjust on under thrown passes on a few of his big plays and was able to create yards after the catch beautifully. Ross' overwhelming speed will surely continue to be at the college level and there is no doubt he can make a similar impact at the NFL level. Not only is Ross a great athlete, he is a good technician and has dependable hands, no doubt a combination that will excite Eagles fans. The trouble with smaller receivers is often that they aren't as prone to scoring as much as the bigger, red zone types. However, John Ross is scoring on 32% of his catches, which is higher than Corey Coleman's touchdown percentage last year and nearly 13 points higher than Dez Bryant's best college season. Ross is a big play threat who can score at any moment and last week was no different. There's a bunch more. He was talked about as a 1st rounder all season. He scored 18 freaking TDs last season for a team that made the College Football Playoff. This talk like he emerged out of nowhere at the "underwear Olympics" has always been crazy. CrazyIrishman5
The people who don't like the pick. This kid had 17 receiving touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown and 1 kick return touchdown! 1newprodigy
I understand why people might have wanted us to go offensive line, but grabbing one at the 9 spot would have been much more of a reach then Ross. There will be a few to choose from in the second, and the depth of defensive players in this draft is tremendous. I personally would love it if Lamb could fall to us in the 2nd. happyrid
One thing that stands out to me after hearing James Urban (Bengals WR coach) talk about Ross at the press conference and then watching some of his videos again is how dangerous he is on short passes, especially 3rd down. Urban said what makes him special is not just how fast he can run, but how fast he can stop and change direction. CBs get back on their heels because they know he can run by them and then he hits the brakes on those comeback routes and he creates a ton of separation for easy completions. You watch that USC video posted above and the multiple easy conversions on 3rd and 4 against Adoree Jackson are just as impressive as the play where he breaks his ankles and beats him deep. |BlackJesus|
Random John Ross Thoughts - Since he is the fastest player ever recorded in the NFL, he better be a 99 speed on Madden, because if he is not, then who the fuck has proven they are faster. - Since he returned 4 kickoffs for TDs at Washington, I hope the Bengals make him one of the 2 starting KR. Too often the Bengals are like the kid on Christmas who gets brand new skates and keeps them in the box for a year out of fear they will scuff them up. Start him week 1, if he gets hurt so be it, most Bengals rookies red shirt year 1 anyway. - I hope the offense utilizes lots of screens, quick passes, reverses etc. As I am genuinely concerned that the OL won’t be able to block long enough for deep passes to Ross or that Andy will underthrow his foot speed. I’d use Ross in the way the Stealers use Brown, just 5 yard slants and let him take it to the house. - If Ross didn’t have the injury history and was 3 inches taller at 6’2, then running a 4.22 would likely have made him the #1 or 2 overall pick. However, he’s 5’11 and has 2 knee and a shoulder injury in past. If those don’t return then the Bengals got value. If he goes Chris Perry, then once again the Bengals medical staff is sub-par and a liability. We’ll see. - Although I didn’t want Ross, I feel like the National media was underwhelmed by the choice party because it was the Bengals that made it. Had he been drafted by the Giants or Cowboys etc, all we would be hearing about for a day or two was how they added 4.22 speed and now have the fastest player on the planet yada yada. He’d have endorsement deals lined up with food delivery services and be the pitch man for several companies in his big market. Yet, the Bengals make the pick and they are in a rush to talk about the next player taken. At least they didn't go to a commercial this year though. |BlackJesus|
Someone needs to contact the Bengals marketing team and have PBS set up a special where following a John Ross touchdown, all beers in the stadium are $ 4.22 for the rest of the game. |BlackJesus|
He actually wore #1 at Washington, so this jersey is accurate. A shame the NFL won't let WR wear single digits.
|BlackJesus|
Speaking of Jerseys, I wonder if he will have Ross III on the back like in college? And if so, will he be called JR3 ? Shows what I know. Apparently they see something I'm not seeing, and I hope it's not just because he has a 4.22 40. If anything I would rather hope that he's more like the G.O.A.T, where even though Jerry Rice had a pretty average 40, the thing with him is that no one could actually run him down...like where most good WRs have a second gear, Rice had a third... Also, since Ross is one of us now, he better be stupid elite at running those slants, like Michael Irvin. He masters that, then the 4.22 becomes an effective weapon... DanvilleBengal
I'm feeling better about the pick now. Apparently he's as good as expected, and definitely liking the intangibles... Also loving the comparison that Ross could be "Chad Johnson with speed", meaning if Ross is like Chad from 2001-2006 with the sleeping in the office and the work ethic, all of a sudden, he could be the steal of the draft... Not to mention he does help 2 out of three phases of the team, offense AND special teams/returns. He may not be a regular on offense, but better believe it that we will see him more on returns than offense--unless he blows up preseason... This is gonna be intriguing at least... |High School Harry|
The pick is growing on me. (like jock rot) I think what hurts the perception of the pick is who was still available when we selected him and thinking what trades were out there seeing what was given up for the #10 slot. Its kind of like picking the fast avocado when two better ones were still on the table. On the bright side, he will give Eifert someone to talk to in the training room. A good second and even third round pick could make this seem better.
JC
He is a gamebreaker. We obviously have one in AJ, but now you have two guys who can score from anywhere on the field. People can talk about his injury history, and that is warranted, but Chris Perry and Tyler Eifert played every game in their junior and senior seasons and we saw how that turned out. I don't think he will be posting rookie of the year stats, but what he is going to do initially will open a lot of things up for the offense that wasn't present this year due to having three slower receiving options on the field. Plus, this pretty much means the Bengals HAVE to re-sign Vontaze and will have to at least tag Tyler. Taking Foster or OJ pretty much gave them leverage to tell either guy to kick rocks Zeitler style.
