Dax is probably a better strong safety so this might end up a plus for him.
MichaelWeston
No numbers yet for Vonn. Why would Vonn Bell at the end of his career go from a contender where he was a starter to the team with the number one overall pick. `

Maybe so, but I thought his mobility and coverage skills would make him a better FS?

happyrid
Losing Bell sucks. He was the one FA I really wanted back.

I doubt it’ll be a draft pick. If I were betting, I’d say they’ll likely sign his replacement within the next couple of days.
Le Tigre
Appreciate the chart—but are the Bengals going to wade around in the FA pool to basically pay the same money on what they already had on the roster? I am very doubtful. The Bengal historical approach to “build (and save money for 5 years on a position) through the draft” is the more likely way they will go. Sit being the operative word. Pretty sure he had some kind of surgery. Few field reps. Pretty much still a rookie. We'll see.

But the idea of a MAC safety suddenly becoming of JBIII/Vonn Bell quality, is not very convincing. Dog chases tail. The Bengals have seen this movie before: win for a year or two, have half their good players be sold off, then wander around for 2-3 years while draft picks get sorted out. Do we know what Carolina paid? You knew some players were going to go. Happens to every team. We'll see how they backfill the spot.

happyrid
2 minutes ago, spicoli said: Wouldn’t it be crazy if they replaced him with CJ Gardner-Johnson? Interesting to see the tweets from Bengals players to him. Must be at least in the mix with him. Would have preferred the known quantity and experience in the system that Bell has. But CJ is a few years younger and coming off a strong season. Would be a solid swap if they can actually get it done.

happyrid
PFF has CJ Gardner-Johnson projected for a $12.5M per year deal. They had Vonn Bell projected at $8M per. Don't know how realistic this one is but maybe PFF is just way too high on that number.
