49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is making his way through the concussion protocol, which means Sam Darnold could make his first start for San Francisco on Sunday against Cincinnati.

In a radio interview with KNBR on Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he would be excited for Darnold to get an opportunity if it comes.

“I mean, Sam has done a lot of good things since he’s been here,” Shanahan said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com.

“He looks great on the practice field. Got to play with him in a couple of preseason games.

“But when you go into an NFL game with someone for the first time, there’s always some newness to both of us. Just feeling it out, feeling with the team. But Sam’s played a lot of football, and when he gets out here, he’s got such command, got a ton of confidence.”

Shanahan added that those in the building “believe in [Darnold] a ton.”

“They’re amazed with how good he is throwing the football and stuff, some of the throws he makes on scout team, what he did throughout training camp,” Shanahan said. “And if his opportunity with us for the first time is this Sunday, he’ll be ready to go, and our guys will be excited to follow him.”

The No. 3 pick of the 2018 draft, Darnold has plenty of experience to lean on if he has to play on Sunday. In 60 appearances with 55 starts, he’s completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 11,768 yards with 61 touchdowns and 55 interceptions with 13 lost fumbles.

The Panthers went 4-2 in Darnold’s six starts last year, with the quarterback completing 58.6 percent of throws for 1,143 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions.

Bengals (3-3) at 49ers (5-2)

4:25 p.m. ET | CBS | Spread: SF -3.5 (43.5)

Storyline to watch: After a dominant 5-0 start, the 49ers have dropped two in a row on the road, and things don't get any easier here as they return home to face a Bengals team that is trending in the right direction and coming off its bye. Plus, San Francisco might be without quarterback Brock Purdy (concussion). Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, meanwhile, is going against a Niners pass defense that just gave up 378 yards and two touchdowns to the Vikings' Kirk Cousins. -- Nick Wagoner

Bold prediction: Cincinnati's offense will hit 30 points against the 49ers. During San Francisco's two-game skid, the 49ers are allowing 5.8 yards per play. This is a bad trend to have right now considering Burrow is the healthiest he has been all season. -- Ben Baby

Stat to know: Burrow is 12-3 in his career against teams that are at least three games over .500, including the playoffs. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that's the best winning percentage (.800) by any starting QB with a minimum of 10 such starts since at least 1950.

Matchup X factor: The Bengals' running game. The 49ers are better stopping the pass (EPA/P ranks sixth) than the run (17th), and Cincinnati has faced a light box on dropbacks 86% of the time this season, the third most. Burrow needs the threat of a running game to help him out. -- Walder

What to know for fantasy: The Bengals have had eight plays of 20-plus yards, the fewest in the league. It's bold to expect anyone on the offense to be better in this area against the 49ers. See Week 8 rankings. -- Moody

Betting nugget: The Bengals have covered five straight games as underdogs. Burrow is 16-8 ATS in his career as an underdog including the playoffs (12-7 ATS in regular season). This is their first game as an underdog this season. Read more.

Moody's pick: Bengals 26, 49ers 21
Walder's pick: 49ers 27, Bengals 23
FPI prediction: SF, 69.7% (by an average of 7 points)

Not feeling good about this game any more.

The quarterback's main job is going to be handing the ball to McCafferty and getting

out of his way.

Bosa is in the TJ Watt/Myles Garrett category and our tackling is sometimes... questionable.

Refs are like a third team on the field all across the NFL.

Score first, score fast and don't let our foot off the gas.

Take McCafferty out of the game and I don't care which qb is in there.

Hendricks, Hubbard, Logan Wilson and Germaine Pratt and our dynamic D backs

and it's in the bag.

Bengals at 49ers

Bengals T Orlando Brown Jr. (groin) is ready to go after getting hurt before the team’s bye week. LB Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee) and RB Chase Brown (hamstring) aren’t going to play.

QB Brock Purdy (concussion) had a full practice on Friday before the 49ers listed him and T Trent Williams (ankle) as questionable. WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder) will miss his second straight game.

Purdy may or may not play.  Hard to know, if he plays he first has to clear concussion protocol, which would see an announcement today (Friday) if that's the case.

Trent Williams is the bigger question.  If he's out, their O-Line drops in efficiency significantly.  60% of Williams is equal to 100% of anyone else they have, and the reserves behind their five starters aren't impressive.
