Round 1 Discussion: 2024 NFL Draft

Recommended Posts

We don't know how the Bengals have the OTs stacked on their board, but imo there are few real scenarios where they won't have more than one of the top six to choose from with pick 18.. There are 4 QBs and 3 WRs expected to be taken among the first 9 picks, so that automatically pushes the OTs down some. Penix and/or Nix could get taken between 11-14 if the Vikings/Broncos/Raiders can't move up for QB4. To me the biggest key is how many OTs are off the board when New Orleans is on the clock at pick 14. The Saints have the worst o-line situation in the NFL. and will surely be taking an OT. I think they take a true LT like Fashanu if he's still on the board at 14.

15. Indianapolis - Widely expected to take a CB like Arnold or KMitchell here.

16. Seattle - Murphy if he's available, if not could well go OL.

17. Jacksonville - Another team in dire need of a CB. Would they take Dejean if both Arnold/Mitchell are off the board...if not they could trade back in that scenario.

I just believe that at least 2 of Fuaga/Latham/Fautanu/Mims will be available with pick 18.

Lathem is the "he's fine" pick for me. Mims is the "I'm excited if he reaches his potential, but nervous as hell about the inexperience and injury thing." Fuga is the "excited for the run game to get in gear, but hope his pass blocking improves" pick.

Supposedly now chargers in on Latham at 5

I don't see how they could take him over alt but I guess we'll see

Understood - but Latham's more of a masher, which is what Harbs likes. His Michigan OLs were like that. Maybe SD would trade back if their intel tells them they can still get Latham a little later.

That's the thing... the different tackles have different strengths... depends on what you value the most. If you're looking for a LT, maybe Latham isn't your guy. If you want power at RT and the versatility to play inside, Latham is that. Alt is a T, whereas Fautanu can play all along the OL, supposedly. Fuaga wouldn't be a great fit as a LT. Fashanu is a T, might struggle inside... etc.

I saw three different major mocks last night starting with Jeremiah having Latham and Alt going 5 then 7.

Any of the four mentioned would be a great prospect to add to our oline.

No one doubts that there are going to be trades inside the top 10 that could affect which OT the Bengals end up with.  I definitely think there will be a move up to either Arizona (pick 4) or the Chargers (5) for McCarthy. I think Arizona would love to make a deal with the NYGiants (6) to only move back 2 slots. That means they are guaranteed to end up with one of the three top WRs (Harrison/Nabers/Odonze) while continuing to add to their NFL best draft capital. But if Arizona stays at 4 and takes an expected WR, then the Chargers could make a deal with the Vikings to move back to pick 11 where they could pick a preferred OT then later in the round pick up a WR themselves with Minnesota's current pick 23.

So I'm rooting for the Giants to move up 2 slots to take McCarthy off the board. That would all but surely keep all of the OTs on the board until Tennessee at pick 7, who would then choose between the WR3 or OT1. The whole idea is to keep as many OTs on the board as long as possible. Also need to hope that there is another desperate QB run between 11-14 (Minn/Denver/Las Vegas) that continues to push some OTs down. New Orleans will definitely take a OT at pick 14, no getting around that one.
