The Beginning of the End for Carson Palmer
By DREW MAGARY

Updated 11:00 AM EDT, Wed, Nov 3, 2010

To me, there have been fewer sad stories over the past five years in the NFL than the steady deterioration of Bengals QB Carson Palmer.

Back in 2005, Palmer looked like one of the five best quarterbacks in football. He had a passer rating over 100. He threw over 30 TD passes. He led the Bengals to a division title. It seemed like the Bengals were going to become contenders for the next decade under his watch.

But then you know what happened. He got his knee torn apart against Pittsburgh in the playoffs, and since then he has grown more and more insecure and incompetent. And it's all coming to a head this season, with Bengals wideout Chad Ochocinco all but pinning the team's woes on his QB:
"What am I supposed to do? I'm out there. I'm on the field. What do you want me to do? I'm on the field, I'm available, I'm wear number 85, I'm out there, I'M OUT THERE. I'm going to leave it at that. There's nothing I can do but make myself available. Period."
You can say Ocho is a loudmouth or a bad teammate all you like, but the fact is that he's being diplomatic when dancing around the real issue here. Over his past four fully healthy seasons, Palmer has experienced steady drops in passing efficiency and touchdowns, and his completion percentage is now under 60%, the usual barometer for decent passing. The Bengals have now lost four straight, and Palmer's only good showings have come in garbage time, at the end of key losses against Atlanta, Cleveland, and others.

Palmer has dealt with assorted injuries over the past five years, but that fails to fully explain why he's gradually become one of the league's worst starting QB's. Palmer is signed with the Bengals through 2014, but there's a very good chance he'll be released at the end of this season, so that the Bengals don't have to pay him franchise QB money. And if that happens, then they'll be forced to start from scratch, which is sad when you consider that the Bengals spent ages looking for a decent QB. They went through David Klingler and Akili Smith, only to fail time and time again. And now, once they finally seemed to find a truly great QB, he mysteriously falls apart.

The only reason Palmer probably hasn't been benched by now is that he lacks a capable backup (his current backup is his own brother Jordan, who lacks experience). But Cincinnati is bound to go shopping for a QB this offseason. And when that happens, the chapter will close on an era that once seemed so full of promise, only to end up crashing in flames.

Wow, this article is utter horseshit. The Bengals release Palmer at the end of the season? Give me a break.
Florio thinks the same thing.

I honestly dont think Mike would do it and I dont think it would be a good move either.

HOWEVER, the only way i see it possible is if we get a new head coach that completely
wants to rebuild. In that case I think its possible you see Chad, TO, Benson, Carson and
those guys go and bring in all new young guys. But even then you think the new coach
would want a veteran qb to teach any new qb we were to pick up or draft. But he might not
wanna pay that new qb top 5-10 money.

So while I think its possible, I definitely think its a WAY long shot. It would be kinda
crazy though if Carson, Chad, and Marvin all left the same year, as those 3 were pretty much
the face of the franchise the last 7 years.

A lot Bengals fans are going to have "be careful what you wish for" moments when Carson is finally gone.
Definitely...I really hope that he starts getting in a better groove with his receivers the next
9 games or so and the line gives him a little more time and players
start making more plays so that the ignorant fans around here wont boo him out of town.

Not saying carson has been playing great himself, but
hes having a bad year and still putting up decent stats.
Hes not injured goods, hes just had a few bad games.

Playing more bad than good. I could see CP going before his contract is up. I don't want him gone...I want the old Carson back, though. The one playing now is making me want my season ticket money back. Otherwise with CJ/TO on both of his posts.

We wouldn't be talking about how bad Carson is playing if upgrading the OLine would have been more of a priority the past couple of off seasons.
I'm not gonna defend the oline, but Carson's stats would look astronomically better if his WR's would just run the right route and catch the damn ball.

That too, but the root cause of Carson's decline over the past 2 or 3 years can be traced back to the OLine's inability to pass protect. Carson's a robot. He's not going to improvise and make plays for you so you've got to accommodate that.....he's the franchise QB. He needs to get into a rhythm. Bad Oline play and inability of the BOB to recognize this and call plays accordingly play a huge part.

Either way I think a lot of us here would agree that is not just carsons fault.

Im personally in the belief that he isnt physically hurt and that if we rebuild the oline
and getting him more experience with the young guys and maybe get him a new threat or two
if CjandTO were to leave, then I think he can definitely regain his form. Even if chad and to
stay I think he can regain his form. I dont think he is past his prime or anything.

But lets be completely honest, carson needs a good line to be a top 5 qb. Hes not the type
of QB with elusiveness or even really great pocket presence. Hes not gonna put up great numbers
behind a below average line. If we dont upgrade the line in the offseason we might
as well let carson go and try to get a qb that has scrambling ability.

But if we can upgrade the line I have faith in Carson regaining his form.

Funny thing to me is that everyone blames the O-line, and I tend to agree, but let's be serious here for a second, if the O-line is that shitty, which it has been for the past few years, and the coaching staff hasn't done anything to upgrade it, then it's time to send the coaching staff packing. It seems like all the geniuses are on this forum. I wish Marvin would leave and Mike Brown would scout a coach out of here so we could fix this team up and win some SuperBowls.

It doesn't take a genius. It's football.....a game.

This team has pretty good talent at every position...........except Offensive and Defensive lines. We can't protect our QB and we can't get to the opposing QB. Bad combination.

Maybe the coaches thought there would be progress from individuals, thus making the sum better. That didn't happen.

I think it's about time to be benching Chad. He's played like complete shit most of the year. Yeah he's had a couple of good halves, but I can't say that he has been a big part of the offense as well. At this point, might as well put Simpson in on some of his plays and see what he has got.

Somebody help my out here... How can it be garbage time when Carson led us to a 4th quarter LEAD against the Falcons? Didn't we lose the Cleveland game by 3 whole points? WTF is this guy talking about?

Favre's QB rating was 74 and 78 in 99 and 2000. Didn't break 60% completion either. Missed the playoffs both years too. Green Bay should of released the worn out sack of maggots.

Had nothing to do with Favre's line because he was only sacked 68 times in those two years LOL.

Stupid article.

so we didnt go to almost all 3 step drops? add slot options and te options for short passes? we didnt change carson footwork to adapt to the shorter throws?

Maybe the coaches did want to upgrade the o-line but the higher ups felt that it wasn't needed? If that's the case, what good would it do to fire the coaches?

I think you're the one who needs to get fucking real. It's plain and obvious for everyone else to see except for you. I think you have some sort of receptor blockers in your brain ......... otherwise I can't explain how you can continue to defend the guy. I guess that's what makes the world go around though.......people who are right like me and those who are wrong like you. Differing viewpoints.

Usually, when 99 people see things one way and you see it differently, it's YOU who needs to get fucking real. But you still my boy blue. Oh my bad, I forgot Striped Crusader also shared your viewpoint. That's like Thurman agreeing with me....I'd rather not have it happen otherwise I'd have to reconsider my position on a topic. So that's 99 people vs 2 people.

Maybe the BOB needs to put his whiskey bottle down for a bit....you know, like from 1pm - 4:15pm on Sundays.

We tried to upgrade the line. Andre and Luigs were two of the best offensive lineman in their respective positions. Luigs turned out to be injured all the time and Andre turned out to be lazy, fat, and lazy.

Coach's can teach technique, but can't coach injury or heart.

I like Go for making this site, and lots of things I agree with him on.

And we all know that Go thinks the offensive line is the whole reason our offense sucks.

Yet neither Mike Brown, Marvin Lewis, or Bob Brat get any blame for that?

How is it none of the 3 head guys on the offensive side of the ball to be blamed for our offensive
line being so bad?

This is what I have been saying for the past two years to open up the offense. A whole lot of people here have called me a lot of names. I even drew a diagram showing how it would impact the defense and cause them to spread out opening holes in the zones. Everyone last year called me crazy because we were a run first team, we saw how that went against the J-E-T-S. Funny how things come back. 4 wide with a 3 step drop would work wonders.
