Changes coming in the Bengals Front Office

Wow/Ugh.

I'll wait to see how this offseason plays out, but not an impressive first step.

Question- when does this season officially end from a cap standpoint? I was really hoping the Bengals would be locking up some people with this years extra cap money- is this still possible or is MB literally just holding on to it?

Teams had until the Saturday of week 17 to sign players to contracts and count money in 2011. The good news is that the unspent cap space of the Bengals automatically rolls forward so it will eventually have to be spent. Under the old CBA teams could retire unused cap space and never give the players the money so the union made sure to change that in the new CBA. The per team minimum spending floor takes effect in 2013 so the Bengals could underspend in 2012 if they choose to but money not spent then will have to be spent in 2013.

That is why I think we have a real shot at a championship over the coming years. The FO suddenly making so many changes that were pretty much inconceivable in the past makes me wonder if Mike isn't going to take his shot at a Lombardi before riding off into the sunset.

I don't expect a big splash in FA, as that's not their history. That said, I DO expect them to sign some guys to improve the roster, just as they will let some go who either don't fit their future plans, or who fall outside of their value assessment (cost vs benefit).

They did a better job than most years (relative, I know) this past year, though... whether through FA or the waiver wire, on offense they added a decent backup QB in Gradkowski, re-signed Leonard, added Hawk, got McGlynn (not starter quality, but a serviceable backup), added Lee and Scaife.

And on D, added Howard (plus), Lawson (meh), Clements (overall plus), plus a solid returner in Tate. Not big names necessarily, but several were key piece parts on the field and positive additions to team chemistry.

Tate is God awful. Why not Bernard Scott, Pacman, Peerman back there?

I hated Tate at the beginning of the year, but thought he looked a lot more dangerous the last few games. He still drives me infuckingsane when he takes the ball out from 8 yards deep, but he got better as the year went on.

With that being said, I hate using a spot on strictly a kick returner. B.Scott could have returned kicks all year and we could have had one more guy active.

Agree 100%.

With Shipley coming back and hopefully getting a good wr2, we can put baby hawk back there and see what he can do. I remember hearing he didn't want to return kicks but if it comes down to making the team or not, Andrew will come around.

Tate is too mediocre to keep an active spot open every week.

He averaged almost 11 yards per punt return. That's mediocre? Sorry, i don't see it.

As a kick returner, he was average - that I'll give you... But the blocking on KRs wasn't good either. I think his judgment on KRs got better late in the year, but let's face it, with the new rules, kick returns offer less opportunities than before.

I'm wary about using a roster spot exclusively for a return guy, so I'd like to see if he can contribute there next year. I'd bring in more competition for sure, but I don't get the hate for Tate as I think overall, he upgraded the return game.

Pacman is one of the best returners in the league and we don't use him. He was returning kicks when he was starting for Jeff Fisher who is a much better coach than Marvin
Pacman is very injury prone though, plus he was a starter for much of the year. You just can't put him back there consistently returning punts.

Was he coming off a neck injury that kept him out a year then, too?

if they just signed bush alone, i would put that more in the moderate improvement category vs. something "huge"
I this thinking more along the lines of the front office actually being that aggressive, but your probably right. I could see a Bush/Pead combo and 2 new G's becoming a reality.

This is great news. The more football minds and eyes we have on guys, the more opinions we have on guys and the more guys that can come to the consensus on one guy, the better bet they likely are.

via this link, Radicevic will be in charge of scouting for the West Coast. Guess that makes sense as he'd have relationships in the Pac-12 and other conferences having been the Director of Football Operations at UCLA.
