Ouch. I suppose you got what you paid for in Caldwell. A 3rd round pick gave you a few decent years in the slot. Pims is still on the team and good run stopper. Other than that.....

RIvers: D. Soft. No heart. No toughness. He makes Brian Simmons look like a decent player

Simpson: D.

Sims: C

Caldwell: B-

Shirley: D

Lynch: F

Sherry: F

Craig: F

Urrutia: F

Zero pro bowlers. Zero impact players.

Give it a D. Or maybe a C- since Rivers/Simpson were starters. Well below average, but at least they weren’t Sean Brewer or Lamont Thompson.

Nope. If he was drafted by the Ravens/Steelers he would have lasted 2 years and barely played. He played on a sucky D and did nothing of note. He left here and did nothing with teh Saints in 1 year and was out of the NFL.
He was a turd.

That's dumb. He was drafted by Lebeau.

This draft is a d.

What is your definition of "sucky" defense.

The problem for Simmons was during the prime of his career the Bengals were god awful, by the time Marvin got here and got things turned around he was on the downward slope of his career. Had Marvin had Takeo and Brian when they were rookies they would have been Pro Bowl, or at least I believe.

The 2005 draft is the could have been draft. Could have been our best draft ever. If Pollack would not have been hurt, if Odell could have stayed clean, if Henry could have stayed around etc... Even the later round guys played well considering their draft position although Ghiachick gave me ulcers.

Agreed. In December 2005 that class looked like one of the best all time.

Exactly right. There were a few high quality players matched with players that were in prominent starting roles at Franchise positions that in reality were bottom of the roster guys. It's crazy that Bengal fans try to hold those quality players accountable.

Look no further than the CB situation they had during those years. A bunch of 4th and 5th corners filling your top spots. You aren't going to be able to do anything with a Burris, Hawkins, Tom Harris manning your CB spots at those points in their career. It's crazy to think about.

Rod Jones at fucking left tackle???? Really? Akili Smith? Oh my god, horrible.

7 of those picks are still playing in the NFL.
True. Doesn't speak to well about the coaching staff as far as development.

It comes back down to the relationship of Marvin and Mike. Did Marvin want those players? If he did, then why are they forced off the roster with marginal Free Agents? If he didn't, then why aren't they developing because they are still in the NFL.

Frustrating class for sure.

I found this quote from Marvin very very interesting from his presser and may speak to a shift in draft strategy over the last couple of years:

"One of the projects I give the offensive coaches is to rank the top 50 offensive prospects from our standpoint. That will be a little different than the way basically the board is structured. How do guys fit us, and if you had your druthers, which guy would you prefer, and why he fits us. We do that on offense and defense both".

x2. IMO this is exactly what Marvin meant after his last contract ended about having a set philosophy for the team and bringing in guys that fit that philosophy, not just bringing in guys because you think you're getting a great deal.
