Kyle Cook done for the Season? Jeff Faine will visit tomorrow

Recommended Posts

Faine is probably the best option available right now. Technically, he'll be sound, played in Tampa under the Gruden's so he'll have a good idea of the play book, should be able to pick up the line calls pretty easy, and he's played in the AFCN before so he knows what he's in for. Hate to see Cook go down, but shit happens.

I've been stumping for Faine for awhile now, unfortunately it took an injury to Cook to make it happen. I think Faine is the best option at this point. Get him signed and get him playing vs. Indy.

I believe the new CBA requires a 3-day "acclimation" period prior to any contact and/or playing time

In other words...no chance of him playing vs Indy

correct. Same reason Mike Wallace won't be able to play in the steelers final preseason game.

Boling has been lined up at LG since the start of TC. Probably OTAs as well. If the Bengals needs some help, my suggestion and vote go to leaving him at LG and go with your back up center while you search for another Center like Faine to back fill.

Cook’s injury could be worse than thought, Bengals bringing in Faine

08/27/12 at 9:52pm by jreedy | 2Comments

Kyle Cook’s visit to a foot specialist on Monday must have yielded bad news. Per league sources, the Bengals are bringing in Jeff Faine for a tryout tomorrow.

Cook suffered a foot injury in Thursday’s 27-13 loss to the Packers last Thursday but did play most of the game. He was in a boot on Friday but indicated that it was nothing serious. He was not in a boot on Sunday but was not in locker room during the team’s media period on Monday. Head coach Marvin Lewis said after Monday’s practice that Cook was visiting a specialist and that he would not play in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Colts. Undrafted rookie Trevor Robinson was taking snaps with the first team at center on Monday.

Whether or not Cook is lost for the season remains to be seen, but indications are that he will miss a large amount of time. Cook did suffer a foot injury in 2008 in which he was lost for the season. Robinson has had a good preseason but it would be difficult to go into the Sept. 10 opener at Baltimore with two rookies on the offensive line.

Going into this season Cook and Whitworth were tied for the longest active starting streak on the team in regular-season and postseason games at 66.

Well obviously we will field a team.. I'm not freaking out.. But the line was already inconsistent and not quite on the same page.. Now we will be replacing our center 2 weeks before the season, and he will have rookies playing on either side of him..

It's not a good scenario.

The same was said around the league last season about the Bengals having a rookie quarterback and a rookie #1 wide receiver. You never know, this new guy could be the piece they're missing. Don't really have a choice anyway. Sitting around bitching about not having the players isn't going to make them miraculously appear. Gotta do the best with what we have available to us.

Good post and I agree completely. Arian Foster, Victor Cruz... out of no where.

Even Cook was in Robinson's shoes at one time.

Reports: Vet center Faine visiting Bengals

Posted 7 hours ago

Geoff Hobson Editor Bengals.com

With published reports surfacing Monday night that the Bengals are bringing in NFL veteran center Jeff Faine for a look, it's believed the club spent the day preparing for all kinds of scenarios involving center Kyle Cook after he visited a foot specialist Monday.

In 2008, Faine, 31, played all 16 games for a Tampa Bay offense staffed by current Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

But there appeared to be no resolution yet on the severity of Cook's injury. After Cook injured the foot against the Packers on Thursday night, initial exams over the next few days didn't show a major problem and he said he was wearing a boot strictly for precautionary reasons. But head coach Marvin Lewis indicated after Monday's practice that the Bengals were trying to determine the extent of the injury.

Losing Cook would take away a player that the offensive line has relied on for the past three seasons in all 50 games with what line coach Paul Alexander has repeatedly called his high football IQ.

While Cook's immediate backup, left guard Clint Boling, has the same type of acumen, the Faine visit indicates the Bengals don’t want to make two moves if they have to replace Cook. Boling, they believe, is the team's best guard at the moment and rookie right guard Kevin Zeitler has a chance to be an elite guard.

Lewis said that free agent rookie Trevor Robinson gets the start Thursday against the Colts (7 p.m.-Cincinnati's Channel 12) and while he has been impressive and may be able to contribute in the next year or so, he's not an immediate answer.

Faine almost seems fated to join the Bengals. When he came out of Notre Dame in the 2003 draft, it was thought the Bengals would take him with the first pick in the second round and that Cleveland would take Iowa guard Eric Steinbach with their first pick at No. 21.

But the Browns took Faine instead and the Bengals grabbed Steinbach at No. 33. Cleveland later traded Faine to the Saints (where he was a 2007 Pro Bowl alternate) and signed Steinbach in free agency. Faine has struggled with injuries himself, but after missing 12 games in '09 and '10 in Tampa bay he played 15 games for the Bucs last year.

Only difference is those guys played the position they currently play in the NFL, in college. Robinson has never played C before, well atleast not in college so while yes, Foster and Cruz were UDFA who made it big, they didn't have to change positions to do it. If we are counting on Trevor Robinson to be our starting C then we are screwed.

Replacing the Center and the guard on a team that already could not run all that well does not bode well for our chances to increase our running ability.
It is probably the worse case senario going into a game against the Ravens.

1. Running game has struggled.
2. Interior Line has rookie RG
3. Apparently new Center that won't be known until Game week, I guess
4. 2nd year LG

On the days I was there he played a whole bunch of LG. Then when Wharton went down he has been LG since. I'd keep him there if I had a vote.

I'm not bitching about anything. Simply stating the fact that the oline is one of those things where the whole is greater or less than the sum of it's parts.

Probably because the O-line was actually a whole lot better than what some Bengal fans gave it credit for.

Unfortunately we might get to see actual horrible line play this season. In recent years people shit alot on Livings, Cook and Williams now we are facing a situtation of not knowing what we had until it's gone.

THE ONE POSITION THEY COULDN’T HAVE AN INJURY

Other than quarterback now is where they are going to have to deal with one. Center Kyle Cook has a significant foot injury that has the potential to be season ending.

If it was for just a game or two, the team wouldn’t be bringing in Jeff Faine for a tryout today. If it was for just a game or two, they would probably move Clint Boling to center and someone like Otis Hudson, Dennis Roland or Anthony Collins would step in at guard.

Nope, this is the worst possible injury at the worst possible time. If Whitworth was injured, you could see Collins stepping into the spot. At center, you have to do a ton of juggling which isn’t the best thing or go out and find someone. With Faine at least the latter option exists.

Faine, a former first-round pick, would provide a veteran presence and more important is someone who has worked in a Gruden offense. There is one caveat — according to Pro Football Focus he graded as their fourth-worst run blocking center. But Faine is the best possible option on the street right now and trying to take a gamble that something would develop in the waiver wire is a huge gamble.

You can not go to Baltimore with two rookie starters and another player with three career starts. Andrew Whitworth and Andre Smith are one of the better tackles in the AFC but the interior positions on the line remain a question mark.

It’s not the first time though this has happened. As Kevin Goheen noted in a tweet last night, it will be the third time in Marvin Lewis’ 10 years that he has dealt with a significant early injury at center. In 2004, Jerry Fontenot was signed prior to the Week 2 game when Richie Braham had knee surgery. Fontenot started six games that season with the first one after three days.

In 2006, Braham suffered a leg injury in a Week 2 game against Cleveland that would end his career as Eric Ghiaciac started 13 of the final 14 games. Ghiaciac’s career here could be described as underwhelming at best.

Wish they would release some additional info on what kind of injury he is dealing with here.
wouldn't be prudent. It would only hurt their potential negotiations with Faine, another free agent, or any team they may be talking trade with.
