so you think they are calling nfl people and asking who the best C's are?

so does that call go something like this:

"hey i was going to write a small peice for a website, no one will care about it a week later, but i was hoping to get some feedback on the best centers in the league for this article"

they pick the up and coming "sexiest" story line teams, look at it, texnas (foster, playoffs, went through many qb's, good storyline team, bengals, rookies last year, playoffs, etc, jags, MJD controversey, young offense, WR with headlines about him.... etc.. then toss in your normal major market love fest... and you have ever article ever written by a lazy writer who is getting a paycheck based on his name...

go look at pats work on cbs, click on him and the list of his articles, his 5 questions out of each teams camp, those are all unresearched stuff everyone knows trendy taglines..

he didnt call any scouts or coaches for this stuff, neither did lombardi, you cant honestly think he would waste anyones time with this do you?

http://www.cbssports.com/columns/writers/kirwan there read this crap...

his best knowledge is going to be on league matters, he isnt watching 16 games each week, and he isnt going to call scouts and coaches and talk about centers...

his job is to get readers, keep readers, and be named kirwan.

lombardi does some great reporting sometimes, he really really does.. but like everyone else he fills his deadlines with fluff pieces...

a friend of mine does this for a living, i have sat with the media at many sporting events, regular season, playoffs, championships, and watched, on many occasions they have an article pounded out by halftime assuming a certain outcome and move along to chit chat or words with friends. i watched one lady get pissed that the team came back from down 18+ points to win she had to re write her whole article, as the first one was about how the other team dominated na dnever looked back, etc, two page article that was half assed in a championship series for a major sports outlet.

all of these people are normal people, or worse, retired athletes, who do this stuff for an easy paycheck or off name recognition.

lombardi is probably 10x the factual reporter than kirwan is.. but you cant take every peice these guys write as some deeply researched pro knowledge insider info backed with tons of knowledge and experience.

it just isnt.. they could care less...

48 hours of film per week to watch any one linemen per team.. or 8 hours of coaches film tape, which im sure he doesnt bother getting, hell he probably only spent an hour writing the article, with nfl.com/stats open in another browser for his "facts"
Just so I can have some basis for comparison. When you formulated your opinion on Cook being average. I am assuming that is based on your overall ranking of NFL Centers.

How many NFL people did you talk to? How many hours of film study did you do?

That's issue 1.

Second issue is there is small detail that this franchise has named him the starter the last 3 years and appear to be quite happy with him. Oh by the way 2 of those years were playoff years and all had them ranked in the top half of the league in protection stats.

Does your film study go above and beyond Paul Alexander's?

Faine wasn't a bust in Cleveland either. The Browns traded their 2nd rounder and Faine in 2006, and got NO's higher 2nd rounder. Bentley had just left NO for Cleveland, so the Saints wanted another center. I think Cleveland ended up drafting D'Quell Jackson with that pick?

Wow, the arguing was very bad on here before. Now that Go is back, it has gotten even worse. I just want to read some articles and insights about my favorite team and there has to continually be a pissing match. Jeez!
Ehh I usually don't share Go's opinion, but I'm glad to see him around here. I assumed the further away he got, the less likely this place was to continue existing and that would be sad.

I actually think Go has been pretty cordial of late.

So have they signed Faine yet or not...probably not. They will probably wait until after the last game to evaulate Robinson, he will impress vs. guys who will be cut the next day. Hobson will write some campy story about Robinson and we will start the season with a rookie RG, a UDFA rookie C, and LG who played 3 games last year before he got benched.

I can see MB going cheap and fucking up the whole season to save a few dollars.

At least Bengals will be in better shape than Dallas.

Come on man, MB has many faults, but throwing away a season for $800,000 is not something he would do. It isn't like Faine is going to be expecting some huge deal. Give him a vet minimum deal with some incentives and I'm sure he'll jump at it.

Ya cause the old guy sitting on his couch is going to "save our season". If that was case he wouldn't be without a job. I hope they do wait and see how the new guy looks Thursday and go from there.

Haven't read every thread, but this one seems just fine to me. Discourse and debate are awesome to me. It's when things take a turn to personal attacks and mud slinging that I have an issue... Doesn't seem to have turned into that at all.

On the topic, I don't care if someone likes or dislikes Cook. I just think it's a bad idea to dismiss Pat Kirwan's assessment as mailed-in or unresearched. Disagree with his conclusion, but don't say he didn't do the work. Nothing I've gotten from him ever suggests that.

I just hear all of these reports about the Bengals trying to trade and how good Robinson is at snapping the ball now as supposed to two months ago when he could even do that.

When it comes to the Bengals have I learned to expect the absolute worst and be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't happen...that's all.

In that case, how do you explain Antonio Bryant? Seems to me that move was closer to the opposite; wasting millions more than "a few" of those dollars desperately trying to get over the hump. I'm not a big MB fan but to describe not immediately signing Faine out of that same desperation as "going cheap" is a stretch. Hopefully at worst Cook misses a game or two. If they have to IR him, so be it. Blame anyone that made fun of the DeCastro injury if you want to get mad at someone. Kooky as that may be, it makes more sense to me than calling MB cheap every time a FA leaves town without a contract.

:offtopic:

MB joke-off?

MB is so cheap, he fined Carson for the Gatorade.

That culture of disappointment has largely been absent under Marvin Lewis. We've had exactly TWO what I would call "bad" seasons under Marvin...2008 and 2010...no Carson in 2008 and 2010 was certainly a head-scratcher. I don't think going 7-9 or 8-8 is awesome, the goal is to win it all, but in every other season Lewis has been here the Bengals have at least been competitive and mostly fun to watch.

listening to Lapham on 700WLW. Missed the beginning but it sounds like its a 6-8 week injury.

Mentions that the in-town Saints are in need of a Middle Linebacker, and they have a backup center Matt Tennant (Moeller grad). No NFL starts, but played center at Boston College with Lapham's nephew...5th round pick from 2010, Saints run a similar system.
