Andrew Whitworth

Updated; 2:10 p.m.

The Governor has turned into The Lobbyist for this weekend.

Andrew Whitworth's campaign to play Monday (8:40 p.m.-ESPN, Cincinnati's Channel 5) against the Steelers has apparently intensified as Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis could only shake his head after Saturday's practice as he pondered the situation of his Pro Bowl left tackle.

Asked if Whitworth could be compared to a caged lion, Lewis said, "Bear. A bear is more like it."

"Andrew feels really good. He's had a good week of preparation, work. He feels good physically. Very good physically. He's been proving to me he feels very good physically."

But Lewis didn't look like he had an answer to what is a complex question. Until this week, Whitworth hadn't practiced for three weeks after having a procedure on a knee he was already rehabbing. Even though he looks good, Lewis has to weigh the facts that Whitworth has yet to play in a game this year, he doesn't want to rush the knee since there are 14 games left after this one, and backup left tackle Anthony Collins is coming off a solid game.

Asked if he'd rotate him in with Collins, Lewis said, "I don't know. I haven't decided.

And that's how Lewis put Whitworth on Saturday's injury report: Questionable. After barely playing last Sunday when he hurt his hamstring, special teams ace Jeromy Miles is doubtful after not practicing. CornerbackBrandon Ghee (concussion) and backup guard center Mike Pollak (knee) are out.

For the Steelers, it looks like old friend Shayne Graham won't be kicking. Shaun Suisham (hamstring) practiced for the second day in a row and is probable. With starting cornerback Cortez Allen (ankle) ruled out, they have to be concerned that the next guy up, third-year man Curtis Brown (illness) is listed as doubtful after going limited Saturday.

THE SERIES
Steelers lead the regular season series 52-33 and postseason series 1-0; 26-16 in Cincinnati, 12-2 at PBS

NOTEWORTHY
» It's the earliest the Bengals have played the Steelers in the 11 seasons of head coach Marvin Lewis and the first time they've played Pittsburgh in the first or second game of the year since they overcame running back Ickey Woods's ACL injury on Sept. 17, 1989 in a 41-10 win at Riverfront in Week 2.

» If Bengals LT Anthony Collins makes the start, he'll be making an odd circle. His first NFL start came in his rookie year on Nov. 20, 2008 in Pittsburgh against Steelers ROLB James Harrison in a Thursday night game. In Monday night's game he'd be opposed by rookie ROLB Jarvis Jones making his first NFL start replacing Harrison.

» The last time the Bengals beat the Steelers on Monday night, Boomer Esiason outpitched Bubby Brister with 231 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick in a 24-22 victory on Oct. 13, 1986 at Riverfront Stadium. Esiason calls Monday night's game as an analyst for Westwood One and then-Bengals defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau is calling signals for the Steelers.

» Another Bengals Pro Bowl quarterback is in the yard when Ken Anderson joins the coin toss. It was Anderson who provided the franchise's most memorable Monday Night moment on Nov. 17, 1975 at Riverfront when his 447 yards on 30-of-46 passing staved off Bills running back O.J. Simpson's 197 rushing yards in a 33-24 victory.

» Four players are left from the last Bengals Monday Night victory, the 27-20 goal-line stand win over the Ravens that opened the 2007 season at PBS (LE Robert Geathers, LT Andrew Whitworth, DT Domata Peko, CBLeon Hall).

» Andy Dalton is looking to join Jon Kitna and Carson Palmer as the only quarterbacks to beat the Steelers at PBS.

» Shayne Graham, the most accurate kicker in Bengals history, could go if Suisham can't. His miss from 39 yards with eight seconds left against the Steelers at PBS in the 2006 finale led to an overtime loss and knocked the Bengals out of the playoffs.

» The last time the Bengals played the Steelers on Monday night, current Bengals SAM backer Harrison had a sack for the Steelers in a 27-21 Pittsburgh victory on Nov. 8, 2010 at PBS.

NFL RANKINGS
CIN: T-16th in scoring, 17th in offense (T-26th rushing, 14th passing); T-17th in scoring defense, 13th in defense (16th rushing, 14th passing), T-25th in turnover margin at minus-2.

PIT: 26th in scoring, 31st in offense (31st rushing, 27th passing); 6th in scoring defense, 3rd in defense (23rd rushing, 2nd passing), T-25th in turnover margin at minus-2.

» 1-10 - Lewis's record against the Steelers at PBS

Wow, take away the Stealers games and Marvin is 43-25-1 at PBS as Bengals coach.  It kinda reminds me of the the Bengals of the 70s.  In the 1975 and 1976 regular seasons, the Bengals went 0-4 against the Stealers and 21-3 against the rest of the league. Yes, 21-3.

yea in general, Marvin's got a pretty good record outside of games against Pittsburgh and Baltimore.  He had like a 9-4 record against Billick, but he's only like 3-5 against Harbaugh.

let collins play and rotate whitworth with boling. maybe we can generate some push on at least a few left side runs that way, while letting him gain his legs at the same time.

BENGALS TE TYLER EIFERT VS. STEELERS RILB LAWRENCE TIMMONS

Whether it's been Bob Bratkowski or Jay Gruden, Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau has had a history of throwing Bengals offensive coordinators into checkmate. But Gruden has a couple of new pieces that can challenge the Grand Master, particularly the club's first-round pick as the Bengals get their two-tight end offense into gear.

Eifert and Jermaine Gresham each had solid games in Chicago with five catches while Gresham broke three tackles and Eifert two, according to Pro Football Focus.

"It's going to be interesting to see what Dick does. How does he cover the tight ends?" wonders Bengals radio analyst Dave Lapham. "If he stays in base, will he be able to cover the pass? If he goes nickel, can he stop the run?"

The 6-1, 234-pound Timmons may be Pittsburgh's best defensive player right now. Last year he became the first Steeler since Joey Porter the decade before to tie or lead the team in sacks, interceptions and tackles. Last week he played 68 snaps, the same as strong safety Troy Polamalu and cornerback Ike Taylor.

"That's an interesting matchup because both teams would probably say they like that matchup," Lapham says. "Eifert and Timmons are both big-body guys that can run. They're big enough to be factors in the running game, but they also run around well enough to do damage in the passing game."

LeBeau won't want to face the Bengals in nickel situations because it leaves the Steelers vulnerable to the run. But as long as Eifert and Gresham are on the field in pass-or-run situations for the Bengals, Gruden can keep them guessing.

According to PFF, Timmons had two passes thrown his way and both were completed for a total of 32 yards last week against the Titans. Complicating matters for the Steelers is that their secondary is banged up with starting cornerback Cortez Allen on the shelf and third corner Curtis Brown doubtful. Throw in running backGiovani Bernard, and there are a lot of guys to cover.

"It's the trickle-down effect," Lapham says. "They have to decide if they want to put Polamalu on Bernard, but he's not as explosive as he once was. Gresham played really well in Chicago, so if you force them to make some hard decisions on who to cover, it helps other guys along the way."

Statistics may ultimately mean little when division rivals like theCincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers meet on Monday night, but they can indicate where a game might be headed. After starting the season with losses last week, both teams are looking to even their records at 1-1. One of them won't be able to do that.

Before you sit down to watch as Cincinnati opens its home slate at Paul Brown Stadium, take a look at these numbers that could end up having some kind of impact on the game and, in turn, on the Bengals' season:

12: Percentage of NFL teams since 1990 that have made it to the playoffs after starting a season 0-2.

0: Times the Bengals have had a winning season after starting a season 0-2.

2: As in Week 2. After losing their openers the last two seasons, the Steelers have responded in Week 2 with a victory.

7: Number of games the Steelers have gone without hitting the 100-yard rushing mark. The last time they went eight straight without 100 yards in a single game was in 1935. Only the Chargers (eight) have a longer active streak.

27: Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton's QBR in his four career games against the Steelers.

54.6: Dalton's QBR in the other 29 regular-season games of his career.

3: Games in Bengals receiver A.J. Green's career in which he has had only one catch. Two of those came at Paul Brown Stadium against the Steelers.

29: Number of receptions Green has in his career that were thrown 20 yards or more downfield. Only Detroit's Calvin Johnson has caught more passes (37) thrown that far. Johnson's career started four years before Green's.

3.03: Average number of seconds Dalton holds onto the ball before passing or taking a sack. Only New England's Tom Brady, at 3.01 seconds, has a quicker release.

1.98: Average number of seconds Dalton took before pass attempt against Chicago last week, according to Pro Football Focus.

62.3: Percentage of defensive plays linebacker James Harrison was on the field in Cincinnati's opener at Chicago.

84.1: Percentage of defensive plays Harrison was on the field on average during his nine seasons with the Steelers.

5: Sacks that Harrison was in on in a 2001 college game between his Kent State team and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's Miami (Ohio) team. That game marks the last time the former teammates played against one another.

Steelers-Bengals Preview

Mike Tirico and John Gruden preview the Monday night matchup between the Steelers and the Bengals.

This video is really nothing more than a Troy Polamalu love fest.  FUCK THE STEELERS!

Fuck that knee-hitting, helmet-leading has-been. Is he retiring or something? Is that why they're giving him the Ray Lewis treatment from last year? Is that why they're blowing a player that hasn't been that great in the last couple of years?
