LostInDaJungle
Who knows anything about which Bengals team is going to show up any given week. We're in week 14, and I can think of ONE week where I thought the offensive game plan made sense. 31 other QB's in the league have to execute a competent game plan. Joe Burrow has to pull rabbits from hats while Zac Taylor outsmarts himself. I've found the trend - Taylor "tries" to do what they're not expecting. He thought the Chargers would sell out on the run, so he brought in 3 TE's and tried to run short routes. He thought the 9ers would hang back so he tried to run. And FWIW, we haven't been able to run up the middle all season. 2 straight with the game on the line is asinine. Then running 5 wide empty set on 3rd and 8.... F***. Two big "prove it" games... And the team has come out flat and gotten behind early. Burrow has shown some obvious frustration - and he should. The offense finally comes alive in the second half when they start letting him open it up. Your 23 year old 2nd year QB should not call a better offensive game plan than the O-Coord. And it breaks my heart to see Burrow give heart and soul to get this team back into games just to watch timid play calling on the other side of the ball let him down. 2 weeks in a row he has outplayed his counterpart SOLIDLY, and lost the game. Putting up big numbers long into the time when the defense knows he has to pass. If the Bengals team shows up that starts flat and gets behind early, expect that team to lose. If they fumble 4 special teams kicks, they'll lose. Joe Burrow makes anything possible, maybe Zac Taylor can stop shooting himself in the foot. Dunno. As a side note - it's hilarious to see the Sunday AM talking heads. They obviously look at stats and not much else. You'd have thought we had a dominant 4 yards and a cloud of dust running game from listening to them.

None of them. I like Pratt, Wilson, and Davis-Gaithers. Best group of LBs the Bengals have had in a decade or more. FWIW - It's been primarily Von Bell and Jessie Bates that can't cover TE's. Pratt, Wilson, and DG were doing a pretty solid job on RB's out of the backfield.

Seems with Bell coming in so much it leaves Bates not covering centerfield but right and left as well.. I dont think there's a player that runs more in a game than Bates and hes playing damn near every snap.. Its not woirking..

I dont think there's a player that runs more in a game than Bates and hes playing damn near every snap.. Its not woirking.. Lou's scheme uses a lot of cover 3 robber in the nickel. Both CB's have deep responsibility to their side. Bates has the middle of the field. 2 LB's and the slot CB in the under zone. Von Bell allowed to roam and pick up the best target, play the run or play a mid zone. Most NFL Zone plays have 6 guys back, 4 guy rushing, 1 guy roaming. There's some 4 deep 3 short variations, the 3 man rush with 4 and 4, or the 212 "Tampa 2" - 5 man zone with 2 jokers. For us, cover 3 robber is the "base". That's what they want the QB to think they're running on 75% of downs. Everything else builds off of that look. They might blitz a LB and drop bell into his Zone. They might switch the slot and edge CB deep/short. Might flip the play and let Bates play robber. Like he did on the almost interception. Drop Bell in the outside short and let Wilson roam. And so on... We had a nickel CB on their TE all day. He mostly found success slicing up the middle of the zone. But... There's a reason dude keeps racking up 100 yard games against not just us. The way they're used in the NFL today is mostly the zone beater. coming up the seam against the MLB before the SS, The flat between the two short zones. Coming across the formation to to flat on the other side... If the middle short follows the TE, your RB just caught one for 7 yards. Etc... If your QB can read his progressions and make the decisions... There's a reason Uzomah has like 73 TD's this year. Cover him and Perine is looking like Gio. It's a solid scheme, but as the injuries have piled up, Von Bell is kind of the "last play maker standing" - he's going to make a lot of big plays and big mistakes. But he's also got a lot riding on him. Bates is the guy who keeps big plays from happening in the middle. He just has to find the right mix of keeping the play in front of him and staying in the play. When he's been brought up in that play maker role, he has not shone. For a guy who came into the season talking about best Safety in the league, he's not scaring our opponents and getting mentioned on Pregame. The subtle way that the loss of Wilson makes Lou's job harder is that there's just fewer playmakers to go around. Bates just hasn't been making plays. His role would be bigger if he was making the most of those opportunities. Bates isn't playing center field because Bell can't cover - Bell is roaming because Bates was missing tackles and getting beat.

|High School Harry|
Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson has proven to be an outstanding signing for Cincinnati. So fans held their breath when Hendrickson injured his back and was ruled out during the third quarter for the rest of Sunday's Week 14 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Paul Brown Stadium. On Monday, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor shared good news - that Hendrickson suffered a back spasm during the game and is considered day-to-day, with the team hopeful that he'll only be limited during the first part of this week of practice. Hendrickson has starred as a pass rusher in his first season with the team. During the first half Sunday, he extended his streak of games with a sack to nine - the longest active NFL streak and longest ever by a Bengal - by increasing his season total to 12.5. The Bengals initially brought out a cart for Hendrickson, but he walked off under his own power to an ovation from the crowd.

Roquan Smith, Deion Jones, Fred Warner, Eric Kendricks, Devin White, Bobby Wagner, Matt Milano, Darron Lee, Joe Schobert, Lavonte David, Jerome Baker, Demario Davis, Shaq Thomspon... The Bengals have no one like this. Logan Wilson is decent and along with Germaine Pratt and Akeem Davis-Gaither the Bengals LBs are better than they've been. But, they've been so tremendously bad that a small step up is monumental and doesn't make them great by any stretch. The reality though is that a TE like George Kittle is going to get his against almost any team.

Well buckle up for another day of covering TEs this Sunday. Denver has targeted their TE unit 114 times so far which is around top 5 (9 per game).. Fant and Albert O aren't game breakers but they move the chains.. Bengals are around bottom 5 with JB targeting his unit 54 times.

Agreed. I'm as critical as anyone, but our LBs are pretty decent young players. I don't think there is a LB in the league that can cover a good TE. Period. It's why the position can be so devastating. Kittle was pretty much SF's only threat. He's a perennial pro-bowler and even all-pro. The expectations are out of line for LBs. Lost explained the defense pretty well. If you are expecting better coverage of TEs you need to look at the safeties.
