Eagles Bengals Hall of Famer Bill Bergey dies at 79 after lengthy health battle

Bergey's family said he battled cancer for the past three years

Former NFL linebacker Bill Bergey has died, his son announced on Christmas Day. He was 79.

Bergey, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1974-1980, Cincinnati Bengals from 1969 to 1973 had been battling cancer for the past few years. His son, Jake Bergey, said his father was an "out right great person."

The South Dayton, New York, native's professional football career began in the late 1960s when he played for the Cincinnati Bengals

"After a long hard 3 year battle, Dad lost his fight with Cancer. The best father, friend, grand father, football player and out right great person in this world. I will truly miss him.  Love you dad," Jake wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

One of my all time favorite Bengals.

Never saw him play or was not paying attention to the NFL as I was too young at the time but just looking at that video clip of him, he looked to be a Beast.  No surprise the Bengals let him go.  May he RIP.

This was one of the oddest pre-free agency things to have happened.

This was the era of the old World Football League. Bergey signed a futures contract with a WFL team in 1974… with the understanding he would play for that team in 1976–after his Bengals contract ran out. The Bengals sued the WFL and Bergey for breach of contract. Ultimately the court dismissed the suit. By this time, the WFL was almost extinct, so the WFL team released Bergey from his contract. The Bengals, in turn, then traded his rights to PHL. He then signed a 5-year deal with them. The Bengals got a first round pick (Wilson Whitley) and 2 second rounders (Ross Browner and Ray Griffin).

The trade turned out OK for both sides, but the Bengals never did adequately explain the reason for the trade—since they still owned Bill’s rights. Remember, there was no free agency at this time, so they held all the cards with him. I seem to remember that PB hated the WFL…and thought players who jumped there were virtually traitors to their teams and league (even though he founded and owned a franchise in a renegade league). Bill was probably done with PB, but I don’t recall him bellyaching to the press.

Strange times back then.

Thank you.

I knew there was some sort of backstory but could not remember what.

Paul Brown considered Bergy as not being loyal to the team, something he would not tolerate.

For what it's worth, we got 2 firsts and a second for him. Eagles were terrabad back then so they were high picks. Whitley and Browner were both the 8th overall pick in their drafts.

And Ray Griffin became a valuable rotation at Safety and corner during his 7 seasons here.

In rotation with who, being the question

I think Jackson and Jenkins are the starters next year. I would not mind having BJ Hill back for a short term deal, but I think the team moves on. I also think Rankins is likely done, as he's been a waste here. I'm looking at FAs at DT and not much there, unless they keep BJ I think the look to the draft for the 3rd guy.

IMO neither Jackson nor Jenkins have proven they are starter level material yet. Maybe they make great strides during the off-season, maybe they don't. Our track record of pulling the great player out of the good one is not great. For the most part, our guys are either great on arrival, or they aren't. This is obviously a huge indictment of the coaching staff, and potentially the front office, but at the end of the day, pinning your hopes on Jenkins and Jackson working out is the exact same approach that resulted in the debacle that was this season.

That's a scary thought.  They've both looked OK, as in they might be decent players.  They've not at all looked like they should be locks as starters next year IMO.

Hopefully the draft is focused on interior OL and defense.

I dont know what to tell you. BJ Hill is a FA, Rankins is not done anything. Go look at the FA list and tell me who they are going to bring in?

Oh, nobody, and it doesn't really matter who is available if we're being honest.  Dallas, Philly, & Detroit all have IDL headed to FA but I'm not expecting a serious effort to upgrade.

Best we can hope for is lucking out in the draft.

I dont see a name on this list worth taking

I think we would better be suited to adding a vet CB where there are high level talent guys

Give me DJ Reed for 3 years

The D doesn't need bodies, it needs playmakers.
