by Kirkendall on Jan 11, 2009 4:39 PM EST in Rumors

During ESPN's NFL Countdown, Tom Jackson and Chris Mortensen played a little game, a wheel of fortune style that forecasted the futures of several players that could be on the move this offseason. The "wheel" landed on the receiver combination of Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

The general thinking is that Houshmandzadeh will bail for free agency, and the Bengals will be left with Johnson, who recorded his worst season to date that wasn't his rookie year.

Mortensen said that the Bengals will keep Houshmandzadeh and axe Chad Johnson. Whether it's a trade, or cutting him outright, Mort believes that the Bengals will find a way to let Johnson go regardless. He doesn't cite any sources, or any of that; merely speculation on what we presume is an educated judgment.
I really hope Mort is right. I know the teams we played at the end of the year sucked, but we really seemed to play better without Chad in there. He sucks blocking and just his general poutiness seems to be more of a distraction than a help. At this point, I'd take a 2nd rounder for him and be happy.

I think, I'm with you on this one. Possession recievers are a dime a dozen, especially with a potential all-pro QB and a perrenial all-pro WR on the other side. But a WR that the Defense has to game plan for that can stretch the field, are not that easy to come by. Ask the Giants.

Yep, so why the fuck do people want us to get rid of chad johnson?

he had a shitty year because we had a shitty O line and a shitty QB, wtf do you want him to do, not to mention he was injured.

We also have Chris Henry, who IMo is a complete fuck up, but I know he's not going to fuck up again because he's DONE if he does. he's an extremely talented wr, who needs to see the field more. IMO Chad, Henry, caldwell and hope for some form in simpson next year and this team is extremely skilled at WR, please spend the money else where, like Center, LB, RB and LT.

WE DON'T NEED TJ!

Disagree, sir... A WR of Hoosh's caliber and potential are most certainly a rarity... If untagged, he most likely will be signed in a matter of days, and, if tagged, would still garner significant interest.
C'mon, don't you remember that one game when Caldwell had a somewhat decent game against a horrendous team?

Fuck TJ, we don't need him !!!!11111
Don't you remember extending Willie? Despite having 1 All Pro season (2006) and clearly the bengals trying to make a run during 2006 fresh off the heals of a division championship in 2005 the only thing anyone remembers is what a mistake it was to try to keep him because he had an injury filled 2007.

I can see why you don't keep TJ, is it likely the bengals rebound and make a run at the playoffs in 2009? I'd say no. Are you confident he'll be playing at this level in 2010 and 2011?

TJ has had injury problems through out his time with the bengals. The shrewd thing to do might be to make it sound like he is so important, tag him, and then trade him as you get closer to the draft. I bet you could get a couple nice picks for him.
Let the Houshmandzadeh speculation commence

I'm taking for granted that most of you know the situation (tag him, long term deal, or adios). While "negotiations" occur, and the Bengals might accidentally learn that a franchise tag could be advantageous for negotiations, other bloggers and media are starting to list their position shortages. The Bengals don't have many players other teams would like, but there is a certain wide receiver that's well known to hit the free agency market; others are taking notice.

Jaxon looks at Houshmandzadeh as a free agent the Panthers should look at.

Houshmandzadeh could be a big name in San Francisco, however, Fooch advises the young players are coming along.

Matt Barrows says Houshmandzadeh is made for the 49ers offense.

David Climer "prays" the Titans go after Houshmandzadeh, calling him a difference-maker.

Sean Jensen writes that Houshmandzadeh would be the consistent target that the Vikings need.

Even the Bills could use help, though no one expects them to compete during negotiations.

With all that said, Glenn Holt weighs in saying that "he expects the Bengals to sign receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a new deal."
I think people want to get rid of Chad because of his antics during the last offseason rather than because of his production this season.

And while I hope Henry keeps his head on straight, and returns to his 2005 form on the field, I do not think it would be a safe bet to think he won't mess up again simply because it is his last chance.

Heck, all he has to do is wait a year and want to join the Cowboys, Patriots or stealers and oodell will let him back in. :ninja:/4
