2014 Opponents Thread

I don't think the move was official, documented with the NFL.....more like rumors and info leaking that the intention was to release Yates.   But when teams started calling, as they knew nothing official had been done with the NFL in regards to filing release paperwork etc...they inquired about his availability.  The Falcons obviously offered the best deal in the minds of the Texans.

I think.

yea that's usually how they work.

I think the Taylor Mays deal may have even happened this way.

I wasn't aware you could UNRELEASE a player.   You would think the Texans, hell, any football organization would have a some idea of the worth of a player on the open market.  Not saying the Texans got rich on the deal but it does make them look a little amateurish.

Just think of the times we've supposedly signed a player in FA only for him to end up somewhere else. The easiest way to communicate with all other teams is to leak something to the media.

This makes sense.  Spread the rumor of an impending release would certainly cause any team interested to pick up the phone like NOW or possibly miss out.  In fact, I imagine for the lower tier players, this would be much easier than having your GM or designated caller trying to contact other GMs about his availability.

Not an opponent, but Jonathan Franklin has confirmed his playing career is likely over after one year with the Packers due to a neck injury.  Had a really nice game against us.  Really liked him coming out of the draft.  Its a shame.

Green Bay sure seems to have trouble keeping RBs healthy.  They double dipped last year just to make sure, and now one is already gone for good.

Initially I heard he was ruled out for the coming season. Then the following morning my paper has quotes from Franklin saying his career is over. Really suprised me.

Bummer.

I was really looking forward to future fights with EmDiggy comparing Gio's stats w/Franklin.

Ben Roethlisberger: Steelers' D as fast as any I've seen

Chris Wesseling
Around the League Writer
The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense finished outside of the top 10 last season for the first time this century.

The problem, as NFL Media analyst Warren Sapp has been pointing out since 2011, is that Dick LeBeau's troops had grown old and slow.

We made the argument after the 2014 NFL Draft that the Steelers helped reverse Father Time by picking up Ryan Shazier, the NFL's fastest linebacker since Brian Urlacher entered the league out of New Mexico in 2000.

It isn't just Shazier, though. Ben Roethlisberger told KDKA-FM in Pittsburgh on Monday morning that this defense is as fast as any he has seen in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers have led the NFL in defense five times in Roethlisberger's 10 years.

In addition to a trio of first-round draft picks at linebacker, the defense boasts one of the NFL's fastest players in cornerback Antwon Blake, who claims to have blazed a 4.18 40-yard dash at Texas El Paso.

Roethlisberger's optimism wasn't limited to the defense. He also offered high praise for the offensive line and second-year wide receiver Justin Brown, who had a "great" minicamp.

"I like where we are," Roethlisberger said. "I really do. I know we are young, but I have a really good feeling about this. If we can stay healthy, I like where we are and I'm really happy with our O-line and they have a chance to be great and as good as they are is going to help us."

Big Ben has a good reason to be excited about his annually beleaguered pass blockers. After Kelvin Beachum solidified left tackle and coordinator Todd Haley went to a heavy no-huddle attack, Roethlisberger was sacked just 11 times over the final eight games.

The Steelers' 6-2 record was tied for the AFC's best in the second half of last season. They will be even better this year.

Everyone's Super Bowl contenders at this point in the year.

Saw another article on NFL.com about the Stooler OC or HGH distributor or whoever crowing about their WR depth.

It's great when the league goes out of their way to fluff a team I hate, it's a sure sign that they're really bordering on total suck.
