Moderators, New/Old Etc. Going forward. - Opinions...

Recommended Posts

I've followed this thread with interest and as I read through the last few pages, with a bit of amusement.

I suggest completely closing down the J&D forum. If I remember correctly, Go broke that off into a separate forum out of the General Discussion forum way back when Iraq War II was kicking into high gear. At that time many folks had definite opinions about the nature of that conflict which led to corresponding levels of high dander. That, imo, set the tone for that forum overall. As Le Tigre suggests, "it's the nature of the beast" for politics to be no-holds barred. And that's the way it ought to be if one is serious about having any kind of impact on the world politically. As anyone who has done actual politics knows, whatever civility one finds in political strife is merely a thin veneer overlaying pretty brutal contention for acquiring and imposing power. Not to say that civility is totally fraudulent because  it does help to prevent overt violence in that sphere. Of course, the downside to enforced civility is that one often has to pretend that the views of others are legitimate when deep inside one's soul, a person knows that the other person is full of shit--or worse. The content of one's character matters and one's character is fully put on display when political discussions happen.

The goal here is to restore this board to its previously excellent status. And if the enforcement of civility is deemed to be a significant component of that restoration, then it is probably best to return to an emphasis on the General Discussion forum for non-sports related topics. Discussion of politics and religion ought to be discouraged altogether. Civility is an artificial construct--it's a set of rules by which conforming members agree to abide. It's about presentation. That's a good thing and will no doubt be helpful on this board. On the other hand, there is a deeper personal element to political activity and discussion that goes beyond civility. One's views are measured and respect is the earned (or not-earned) commodity, distinct from civility. And respect is not the result of presentation, but of representation--what a person stands for and why. There will always be disagreement among folks when one starts getting into stuff that is inherently divisive. And that appears to be an opposite direction that what is good for the overall functioning of this board.

So, if my vote counts, kill J&D. Let us all be Bengal brothers and sisters and focus on that.

Not to be the contrarian but I've gained more respect for other posters based on things they've posted in J&D than I've lost. Made me aware of shared beliefs about stuff that really matters. I can only think of a couple of cases where I've had my opinion of someone ruined.

As for civility, the main Bengals forum has been much, much worse than J&D overall. Not sure why that subforum is being demonized when most of the nastiness has been confined to this one?

Just my 2 cents as a regular poster in both.

Seems one of the best posters on this site left to some degree bc of what went down in that forum though...

I think the J&D forum has mellowed a lot now that most of the more conservative posters have stopped posting there due to perceived persecution.  At this point there isn't nearly the friction there used to be.

Cricket every time you post I see this in the main forum, i think has something to do with your avatar pic

How about now?

I know that my Avatar quit working some time ago, but I never really bothered to do anything about it.  I didn't realize that my not correcting it created issues for others.  Sorry.

Thanks.  BTW, that flag was designed and made by my wife and me just before the Bengal's first Superbowl appearance.  It's still in decent shape and can be seen proudly flying in front of our home on Sundays during the NFL season.

For anyone that doesnt go into J&D and wonders what the issue is:

If you arent a raging liberal, you wont enjoy what goes on in the J&D forum. Stay out and you wont be mind boggled with nearly every post. Go in, and you'll find yourself losing respect for many people, quickly. Its not even a middle-ground type place- its exceptionally far left leaning.

I think some of our European (English) members would think that's crazy and in their eyes it would be more center middle

For some, that idea would go over like a lead balloon. But that does remind me of another project I'm considering. Now that I've rededicated myself to playing guitar with an emphasis on country blues, I was think of creating a band which modernizes and electrifies some of those old blues tunes. Cool be a really cool thing. Lead Balloon would be a good name for the group.

Probably, but many EU countries are geared more toward socialized/government controlled programs in general, and is more left than America is in the first place.. so the center linei s already over that way and the right isnt so right.

For America, the J&D forum is definitely pretty far left.

I would suggest that if you're that easily dissuaded from arguing your beliefs it's because they don't have that strong of a foundation to begin with. The only time I've seen people tuck tail and start complaining about persecution is when their views have been skewered by someone that's done research and/or is better educated and willing to present facts rather than quote talk radio, cable news, and conspiracy theory websites.

Further, trying to lump the vast range of beliefs and diverse issues discussed there into that popular "left/right" dichotomy is simplistic to the point of absurdity. The more someone tries to frame their beliefs in that kind of language the more I suspect they're more interested in creating a strawman sort of "other" to rant about. That presumption of speaking for & representing "America" and then labeling everyone else far left is a glaring example of this sort of "Republic of Me" thinking.

I think there are more than a few "conservatives", depending on the specific issue. There are folks with strong anti-abortion views that are also for gun control, just as an example.

If you go in there parroting your favorite demagogue without having done any research of your own, however, it's not going to go well for you.

I disagree wholeheartedly.  But, then again, you knew I would.

I agree.

However I can say I have witnessed some interaction on that side of the forum that was far less than civil or respectful (of people not opinions) and that it seems that some of what goes on here started happening there first.

All that aside, whether actually true or not, going forward I think we should make sure people abide by a certain decorum.  If that's not possible perhaps we should do away with it.  For my part, I have learned a good deal in that part of the site, and would like to see it stay and be a place that everyone feels comfortable in, assuming they are comfortable with having deeply held beliefs challenged.

I will readily admit some of the things posted in that Martin/Zimmerman thread started to piss me off to the point where it was no longer constructive to reply. I'm making an effort to let the other guy have the last word, lately.

Note: Posting "I'll let you have the last word and stop responding" is wack. Just do it & don't publicly pat yourself on the back about it.

That's not true at all.  See T-Dubs replies for how I feel.

Agreed.  I've gained much respect for posters from knowing their views on things that truly matter vs just football, a game we all probably spend too much time on.   That's why I always laugh off our disagreements on Dalton because that's trivial when it comes down to it.
