The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - Chargers

Recommended Posts

Good:    We won.

Bad:   The crowd noise during the Chargers TD run.  Was practically non existent until they were near the end zone.  Even on their 3rd downs.

Ugly:  Two Hill fumbles.

Unusual:  Fisher and his catch.

Much of what has already been said about the D.  Which could be broken down into good, bad, and ugly all by themselves.  I saw Marvin get in Guenther's ear and the D seemed to get better afterwards.  Didn't look like an angry type of thing.  Not sure if it was Burfict on the sidelines but someone resembling him was hopping around quite a bit with the D players.  Not sure because I've never seen Burfict out of his shoulder pads.

One thing I noticed was how much better the run defense was when Pat Sims was in at NT. With Sims it was always one big pile at the LOS with nowhere for the chargers RBs to run. Peko has been a very solid player since hes been here but his prime years are passed. They're roles need reversed. Sims should be starting and Peko should be the one spelling Sims. Also as bad as the LBs were I dont think it would be much of a risk to play Dawson.

IMO that's the direct result of the play calling before the half. Sure, Dalton almost got killed and the Chargers almost got a TD. But you can't just tuck your tail between your legs and call it quits like that with 1:30 on the clock at the 35 and two freaking time outs. The fans were flat because Marvin took the gas out of them completely.  It took our Defense with some big plays in the successive drive to really bring them back and turn it around.

As an alternate example, look at the Packers tonight.  Granted, Dalton is no Rodgers, but they had under a minute and Rogers was sacked hard.  There was clearly no doubt after that that there were going to keep going.  Rogers spots the offsides, goes deep they get the PI, ball on the opposing 35.  They almost scored a TD (three plays inside the 10) but settled for a FG with 3 seconds left.

Those 3 pts would have been a major cushion earlier, and simply forfeiting them is utterly demoralizing -- for the fans and the TEAM.  The fact that there was zero resistance on that drive from the boys in stripes is telling as well.

Dalton seems more composed and calm so far this year.

Team sucked it up and came together when they could have folded.

Jake Fisher's girlfriend is going to be really tired tomorrow morning.

Question for the experts here: Is Hue being too cute with all the shifts along the line? I get that those looks can confound a defense but, to me, it seems like they're being overused.

This is gonna be a fun year, I think.

Personally, I don't think Hue is being too cute at all. I think his boys are committing WAAAAAAY too many penalties.  Snuff that out and we'll be even more formidable.

The refs were so bad in this game. Not blowing the play dead on the Hill fumble was horrible. His momentum was clearly stopped and his body was getting bent backwards. 2 blatant clippings on the chargers TD. The holding call of Kirkpatrick when hes getting his facemask grabbed was a freaking joke. Lastly the holding call by Kroft when he pancaked his man on Bernards TD.

I do love the way Dalton is throwing the ball to start the year - each TD pass was a really, really good throw - and the ball to Jones was an absolute thing of beauty.  A deep ball in stride - just ideal.

Fun thing about this offense is that it doesn't really feel to me like we have seen their best yet. They are putting up points and controlling the game and are yet to really hit on all cylinders.

As much as I love the d-line and d-back play - the LBers for this team are just so, so bad. Really hope Burfict can get back - because they are going to need him. The LB play won't be good enough in the biggest of games as it currently stands.

Seahawks could be a nightmare for the LBs. Rats and chefs shouldn't exploit them too much. Chefs use TEs, but seemingly in lieu of WRs so we might be good with DB coverage.

I know Vinny Rey made the game winning play, but he was so incredibly sucky all game.

Ugly:

The refs seemingly adding time back on the clock at will.

And late in the 4th quarter, they let Rivers snap a good two seconds after the play clock ran out.

Baltimore's entire offense is backs and short game at this point under Trestman.

And the Bengals LBers against Jamal Charles don't make me feel great at all.

And the Stealers loom in Week 7.

The Good:

Gio - He outperformed Hill for the 2nd week in a row.

Dalton - 2nd week in a row he spread the ball around instead of repeatedly forcing it to AJ....proving once again that less can be more.

AJ Green - His post game remarks show no jealousy or bitterness despite not seeing the ball often. Best, he made a spectacular TD catch one week after dropping an easy one.

Eifert - He's quickly proving himself to be the red-zone weapon most stupid people thought Gresham was going to be.

O-Line - A very solid showing despite several plays where a blitzer came completely unblocked.

Geno - He's averaging a sack a game, but that hardly tells the whole story. At times he's been unblockable.

Dre - Kirkpatrick was outstanding all game long and didn't look to be at fault on the late TD that made the game appear closer than it really was. Bengals were twice as good as the Chargers.

Leon - Prior to the critical 2-point conversion attempt you could see Pac and Hall breaking down their responsibilities. After the snap Hall blows the play up. After a very shaky preseason Hall has managed to look solid in back to back games.

The Bad:

Nugent - That was an ugly miss that could have been a back breaker, but ended up being an afterthought. Looked like he aimed short and kicked Mother Earth instead of the ball.

Hill - The first fumble was forgivable. The second wasn't.

Kenny Anderson - Sure, he finally shaved off his porn star moustache, but he did a terrible chicken dance. No way he gets into the HOF now.

The Ugly:

The Refs - So bad throughout they managed to piss off the fans of both teams.

100% agree.   The best time to practice your 2 minute drill is in a real game, at home, with the lead.    And the fact is what we as fans think doesn't really matter but I have to wonder what the offense thought when they looked up at the clock and realized their O-Coordinator didn't have enough faith in them to go for points.   1:30 on the clock, 35 yard line with 2 time outs is PLENTY OF TIME.    Its only 2 15 yard completions to get into long field goal range.   Dalton and the receivers were playing well.    I just don't get it.
