May 4, 20223 yr comment_1670935 Carson Wells 6-4 245 https://cubuffs.com/sports/football/roster/carson-wells/15334 https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/stats/_/id/4243177/carson-wells 31. CARSON WELLS | Colorado 6026 | 241 lbs. | rSR. Bushnell, Fla. (South Sumter) 2/20/1999 (age 23.19) #26 BACKGROUND: Jacob “Carson” Wells was born in Inverness, Fla., and grew up about an hour north of Tampa on his family’s farm, where his father (Larry) raises cattle. He attended South Sumter High (alma mater of Keanu Neal), where he saw immediate varsity reps as a freshman linebacker. As a junior, Wells posted 111 tackles, 25.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks and one forced fumble. Seeing action at defensive end, linebacker and tight end as a senior, he led South Sumter to a 10-win season and was named the defensive player of the year in central Florida, finishing with 96 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks and two interceptions. Wells also lettered in basketball and track, setting personal bests of 11.30 in the 100-meters, 42’ in the shot put and 150’ in the discus. He was also the valedictorian of his graduating class with a 4.6 weighted GPA. A three-star recruit out of high school, Wells was the No. 111 outside linebacker in the 2017 recruiting class and the No. 234 recruit in the state of Florida. He went overlooked by most FBS programs and received only one offer from a Power 5 program: Colorado. Ultimately, Wells committed to the Buffs over nearby South Florida. Wells graduated with degrees in accounting and finance and is pursuing his master’s degree in organizational leadership. His grandfather (Paul McCormick) ran track at Florida. Wells accepted his invitation to the 2022 East-West Shrine Bowl. WEAKNESSES: Tweener size and skill set ... doesn’t have elite length, and blockers are able to significantly slow him down once they make contact ... his sequencing and secondary moves are not on an NFL level right now ... needs to use better flexibility through his hips as a rusher ... has average play strength, and doesn’t have the power to go through blockers when his leverage isn’t right ... will arrive hot as a tackler, which leads to the occasional miss ... long-armed blockers are able to move him from run fits on the edge ... will struggle to be disruptive in coverage vs. NFL skills players ... played minimal special teams outside of his freshman season ... missed two games because of concussion symptoms (September 2019). SUMMARY: A four-year starter at Colorado, Wells played a hybrid edge role in defensive coordinator Chris Wilson’s 4-3 base, lining up in both a two- and three-point stance. He was a downhill force player for the Buffs with 29 tackles for loss in 18 games the past two seasons, including an FBS-best 2.7 tackles for loss per game in 2020. Wells needs to develop his counter game, but when his upper body timing is connected to his first-step quickness, he can put blockers in vulnerable positions. Although his motor runs hot vs. the run, his anchor is inconsistent, and his coverage duties should be limited vs. NFL speed. Overall, Wells is a productive force player off the edge with his initial quickness and understanding of how to weaponize his hands, but his tweener skills lower his next-level ceiling. He projects best as a situational pass rusher or rotational “Sam” linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

Note: Chrisman wears Number 4 ... The Mark of the Rotund One.

Note: Chrisman wears Number 4 ... The Mark of the Rotund One. “Sneaking” him onto the practice squad isn’t the problem. If another team’s LS suffers a significant injury (or loses it), they will just sign Adomitis off of our practice squad. Same goes for Drue Chrisman.

Not taking the punter in the draft was a vote of confidence for OSU Drue and the long snapper is being portrayed as the Mother Teresa of football.
