The 2023 draft is loaded with tight ends.  I am surprised teams are signing all these players in free agency.  Does this mean that maybe some of the better TE's might fall in the draft and be available at 28?

Yeah I expect we take one, still would like to have a vet to pair with the rookie, even if it's just bringing back Sample for a year to be the blocker.

We should be able to re-sign Wilcox and Sample for vet min deals. We should still sign a vet to be our nominal starter until we get an early round rookie. Cameron Brate or OJ Howard types. They'd be ok as TE2 with a rookie at TE1 and Sample/Wilcox as TE3.

Considering his pay so far compared to his production, Drew Sample should volunteer to play for the Bengals next year for free.

He didn't draft himself in the 2nd round, not his fault it was about 2-3 round early.

They thought he was a great blocker and could coach him up in receiving..

Neither came to be..

That's going to happen when coaches are scouting for their own players. They all think they're going to get a steal of a project and turn them into a HoF player.

Con: The Bengals now have a huge gaping hole at TE

Pro: This year's draft is a great one to need an immediate starter at TE and there are many great choices to choose from in the first few rounds. I think before the draft's end the Bengals will even draft 2 (early and late) and double up on the position.

For those who haven't heard, Foster Moreau is taking the year off from football to fight cancer. His physical with the Saints turned up lymphoma.

Apparently the Bengals medical team didn't test for it or he didn't get a physical here?

I'm guessing teams don't do physicals until they agree to a signing? At least that's the impression I got, seems as it he was going to sign with NO

Started digging in on Potential cap casualties at TE and I think I found our starting TE for 2023

1-The Commanders are currently over the cap.

2-Logan Thomas is a TE there, he can be released post June 1 saving 6.925 over the cap this year

3-They have John Bates, Cole Turner and Armani Rogers at TE from the last 2 drafts/classes

4-Thomas caught 39-323-1 last year, 42 career starts including 13 last year.

5-PFF scores last year 52 overall, 57.6 receiving, 34.1 pass block, 37 run block

6-AND the main thing. He was a QB originally, starting with the Miami Dolphins where his QB coach was Zac Taylor in 2015

No thanks on Logan Thomas. We aren't going to wait for a June cut either. If we wanted him, we'd just offer a 7th for him which the Commanders would happily take if they are planning to release him. But he's not worth his current contract and if he becomes a free agent, no guarantee he'd sign with us.

We should sign a couple of vets and draft a rookie in the first 3 rounds. Something like Jesse James for 2 mil to be TE3 and a blocking specialist. Irv Smith for 3-4 mil to be TE2. He's still young and has some upside. Then the rookie to be TE1 by the end of the year.

June 1st cuts are just designations and can happen at any time. If he is not worth his current contract (which I agree) why would we offer to trade with them and assume his contract? We would wait until he was cut and then sign him to a lesser amount

I would do Irv Smith and Sample for sure.
