Arkansas Bengal
Bengals' Adam Jones on heated play: 'I don't back down from anybody' Coley Harvey, ESPN Staff Writer OAKLAND, Calif. -- Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones told ESPN after Sunday's season opener against the Oakland Raiders that he wasn't expecting a punishment to come following his involvement in a controversial play that featured offsetting penalties. Asked if he anticipated a fine or suspension, he simply replied: "No." Jones was part of a second-quarter fracas in the Bengals' 33-13 win that involved Raiders offensive tackle Austin Howard. At the end of a 60-yard run that was going to be called back anyway for a holding penalty, the two were issued personal foul penalties that were the result of a couple end-of-play altercations. Although officials clearly missed it, cameras caught Jones on top of Raiders receiver Amari Cooper, slapping at Cooper's helmet hard enough that it came off. As soon as it did, Jones grabbed Cooper's head and slammed it once into the helmet while Cooper was on his back underneath the veteran corner. "Whatever you saw happen, that's what happened," Jones said. "I'm just here to play football. I don't back down from anybody and I'm not out here trying to start anything. I'm just out here playing football." Former NFL vice president of officiating and current Fox Sports analyst Mike Pereira, tweeted that Jones should have been ejected. ✔ @MikePereira #CINvsOAK #PacmanJones has to be ejected... he slams #AmariCooper's head down on the helmet... he'll get a big fine for that. 4:28 PM - 13 Sep 2015 Apparently seeing Jones' actions, Howard came in and tried to push him off the receiver. At the time, the Bengals were leading, 10-0. Cooper said he thought if officials had seen the play occur, they would have enacted a harsher penalty, like ejecting Jones. Overall, though, he wasn't bothered by the play. "I mean, it's football," Cooper said. "It's a physical game so you kind of expect it." The offsetting penalties came after Bengals safety George Iloka was flagged for taunting late in the first quarter when he got up following a tackle and whipped a leg over the head of the ball carrier he wrapped up. Iloka then slammed his foot hard onto the ground next to the runner's head. That penalty came one play after the Bengals' defenders and Raiders' offensive players were jawing. "I was just celebrating with my teammates," Iloka said. "I was in the moment. Stuff happens." He wasn't the only one in the moment. Jones felt that way, too. "I'm just out playing football," Jones said. "I'm not out to do that. I don't want to hurt my team in any form or fashion, but I have to make sure I protect myself, too." There were 11 penalties called in the game. Five of them were the product of some type of personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct infraction. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/13651928/adam-jones-cincinnati-bengals-calls-slaps-head-slam-self-evident

Jason
I will be surprised if Adam doesn't get suspended for slamming a guys head into his helmet. At least 1 game, but I'm thinking 2. There is a difference between backing down and walking away.

JC
For getting his head slammed down onto his helmet, Cooper took it pretty well. Maybe one of Saban's old coaching techniques or he wants to forget the year or two he is going to be stuck in Oakland.I just hope Adam doesn't get suspended. He is playing phenomenal right now and I believe Keenan Allen is an X receiver so he would be going up against him and Allen went nuts yesterday. Adam needs to knock that shit off and get his emotions in check.
Bengals1181
lost in all this by the media is that it was instigated by Cooper punching Jones in the face. Doesn't excuse Adam (who took it too far), but it wasn't unprovoked.
saphead
Cooper started it. Adam finished it. Nothing to see here.

HairOnFire
If forced to guess I'll go with no suspension. And no fine.Just a great highlite the NFL will heavily promote despite their feelings of embarrassment.I expect to see the fight being featured....with music.....on "Inside The NFL" this week. Bengals1181
It's another reason for me have a certain skepticism towards the media. well, you have to watch the full play to see it. It took me a couple of times to catch it, mainly because I was looking for what instigated it, and more importantly why Reggie Nelson (who always breaks up fights) wasn't breaking this one up even though he's shoulder to shoulder with Pacman while he's doing it.They're running down the field, Cooper is between Jones and the ball carrier. Cooper turns around and shoves Pacman right in the facemask. That's when Jones loses it and takes him to the ground.
|SF2|
Cooper started it. Adam finished it. Nothing to see here. Lol, if it were only that easy. He ripped off his helmet and grabbed him by the throat. No way the two are equal in the eyes of the President of the "I hate Pac Man" fan club, Roger Godell. Fact is Adam Jones let a rookie wide receiver play him.

I'll bet he gets 2 games. There is hardly any mention in any of the national sites about how well the Bengals played--the ONLY thing being reported is how 'That THUG Pacman Jones slammed that poor rookie's head into his helmet!" Ripping a guys helmet off in a fit of rage, grabbing him by the throat and banging his head into said helmet,...not so much.
Bengals1181
in general, the Raiders were very chippy all game. Leon got cheap shotted after a play (that got called)Eifert got punched on his bad elbow after a catch.Cooper and Jones had been going back and forth before then all game. Iloka got cheap shotted after his hit on Cooper.

It was all shoulder pads and forehead. Anywho, its already being reported he won't be suspended.
TimKrumrieFan
Anywho, its already being reported he won't be suspended. As should be the case if you watch earlier in the game and see Amari Cooper punch him right in the throat. Two guys were battling, got heated and both made mistakes they wouldn't normally do. They probably both get fined.

BengalFanInTO
If I'm 6' 1" 210 lbs and a guy 5' 10" 180 lbs tosses me down, tears off my helmet and talks shit to me like I'm their bitch...I'd make little of it later too. I agree with those who believe there will be further consequences from this (because he's Pacman Jones). I don't condone dirty play, cheap shots or general douchebaggery on the field but I wish the Bengals would be a team that doesn't take crap from opponents and stands up to them. I didn't have a huge issue with this. As someone pointed out, the usually cool headed Reggie Nelson was not stopping this which makes me believe there was more to the prior actions than meets the eye.
