Bengals and Browns tried, but failed, to complete trade for QB AJ McCarron before deadline, per sources. Deal was “close”; not finalized.

Bengals and Browns thought they beat the clock on AJ McCarron trade. Clock beat them. Close but no deal.

This just sounds dumb, tried to beat the deadline, but were unable.  Like they only had 3 minutes to get their trade in or something.

Grossi says that apparently the Browns were celebrating their trade and forgot to call in the deal before the deadline...

Cleveland Browns miss chance to land Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron

The Enquirer confirmed an ESPN report that the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns discussed a trade for backup quarterback AJ McCarron.

The Bengals had previously required a first-round pick for McCarron, but the price had moved. A league source with knowledge of the talks indicated the Browns were willing to move second and third-round picks in 2018 for the backup.

The Enquirer confirmed from two league sources that the Browns ultimately did not send the paperwork to the league office.

Multiple league sources told The Enquirer there was a disconnect in Cleveland between the personnel department and the coaching staff about McCarron, which has hindered talks between the two franchises about the quarterback dating back to the spring.

A league source confirmed the Browns did try to appeal to the league to get the deal done.

Wow. A 2nd and 3rd would have been killer for us to deal McScoots. That sucks.

My thoughts as well. Those would have been some nice pieces to play with early in the rounds next year... And some people want Hue Jackson to be our head coach.

If we can get the same deal in April I don't care.  A draft pick in 2018 won't help us now.

Eh, in April they'll just use a first and get Jackson or Rosen instead when they realize they're better, younger prospects that won't need a second contract negotiated the next year.

Spy vs. Spy-level bumbling.  Glad he didn't get traded inside our division, though.

I'd love to see the McCarron led Browns twice a year myself.

Any specific reason you wouldn't want a division rival to be starting a good backup caliber QB?

Shit like this cracks me up. They act like it was only like a 2hour time frame in the whole season to make a deal. Couldn't come up with one. Lol. Garbage rumors.

This rumor actually makes sense. The Bengals FO often lets other teams set the market, and then they move. This often works out in their favor, such as Dalton's contract, which basically had him as the lowest paid non-rookie starting QB until Glennon's contract with the Bears. The Pats set the market with a 2nd rounder for Garroppolo. Probably negotiations only got serious after that point. It's unfortunate--a 2nd and a 3rd given where the Browns will be picking is an absolute steal. Not as much of a steal as the Palmer trade was, but still an amazing deal.

And the winner of this whole non-trade is of course AJ "Way Better Than Dalton" McCarron. Why would any QB want to end up there in stainsville....? Or Head Coach for that matter...?

1. He's an immediate improvement over what they have, which makes a division team better.  Doesn't really matter how much better.

2. You're basing your opinion on him starting half a few games.  We don't know what his ceiling might be in the pros yet.

The Browns are going nowhere this season anyway. We can make this same exact deal when the new NFL year begins in April...

He's a free agent after this year possibly.
