This is quite rare and I discuss here how he was likely careless and that’s probably how it happened. pic.twitter.com/tXmSe8BXYu— Jesse Morse, MD (@DrJesseMorse) January 10, 2025 1 Quote

By its nature "injury settlements" are just that: settlements. Each side agrees to cancel original contract(s) in exchange for "compensation". In smaller scales, this benefits both parties. In the Massage Therapist's case however, the "settlement" would be massive in his favor. In lieu of that, contract remains in effect and the terms thereof. Quote

I can't see what T-Dub pasted but if it's about Florio's piece on Watson's reinjury, if Watson was doing something prohibited by his contract like playing basketball, then that would be manna from heaven for Cleveland. I saw a piece by Joel Corry at CBS with details of how insurance on players affects the cap. The policies are paid for by the team from money that doesn't count on the cap but are structured in the player's name so if he misses a certain number of games in a season, they are counted by the NFL as a refund from the player to the team and add cap space for the team in the following year. The Bengals got a few hundred thousand dollars in 2024 from Burrow's missed time in 2023. The Browns could get 44 mil in 2026 if Watson misses all of 2025. Or they could potentially save 92 mil in cash for 2025 and 2026 if Watson violated his contract. That money would go back on their cap, even if they reach an injury settlement with him retiring and taking a payout privately funded by the Haslams. Quote

I once worked for an organization affiliated directly with Lloyds Specialty Lines. There were many policy types which were individually created for specialty risks--much like the old Lloyds days when certain underwriting consortiums there would "bet" on insuring things like oil production in Iraq, etc. I always wondered if they also did these policies for certain risks such as pro sports injuries. UncleEarl Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 Unless Watson did something prohibited I doubt he gets an injury settlement. It's too big of a number for him to give up. He'll go to a specialist and have it redone. Other athletes have done this. He's not leaving that money on the massage table... 1 Quote

I'd previously thought the injury payout was only for career ending ones but apparently it's based on how many games are missed. The contract will payout after a certain number of games missed in a season (6 is a typical number). If Watson misses all of 2025, the Browns are said to be in line for 44 mil in payouts, which the NFL considers refunds from the player to the team. So it would go back on the team's cap for the following year. Quote
