"He was able to practice during the week, he was able to play, and he thought he was going to play, and he was told just before the game that he wouldn't play," Gould said. "We're disappointed." Gould wouldn't say what Smith's weight is, but he says it is within the 350 pounds he has to be in order to get his game check. "He's worked very hard to get into shape and he's done what the team has asked him to do," Gould said. "He had the (foot) surgery when they asked him to. It was elective and he's worked hard to get the weight off while he rehabbed from the surgery. He wants very much to be at the center of the team." The Bengals need him rather quickly to realize his No. 6-in-the-draft potential. Right tackle Dennis Roland showed his strength and weaknesses against Carolina Sunday. He's a good run player but struggles in pass protection. http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Postgame-quick-hits-Smith-disappointed-in-benching/6e870c3f-8bc6-4340-b114-7fb02f0628fe
Madieu Superstar
He looked brutal against back-ups in the preseason. I'm not surprised at all. I said before week 1 that I thought Marvin would make him inactive. Whether he's fat and lazy is his deal, but watching him in the preseason, he just straight sucked. cincity
Sink or swim, I think it's time to just put him out there, let him try to get into a rhythm, let him learn what DE's are going to do let him feel the game and if he fails, let him go (Roland is really not doing much better) If he would have made the mistake that Roland made today, he would be soooo deep on the depth roster that you could find see him with binoculars. Bengals1181
I only mentioned Simpson because we needed Oline help the year he was drafted in the 2nd round. A wasted pick that is haunting us. Forced us to pay money and use picks to find another receiver instead of addressing what is becoming a bigger problem by the week, our oline.
they also needed a lot of WR help that year.
oldschooler
From John Clayton ... Short Takes By John Clayton ESPN.com The Cincinnati Bengals surprised everyone by deactivating 2009 first-round choice Andre Smith. He had averaged about a dozen snaps a game the first two weeks -- mostly on running downs. To deactivate a former No. 6 overall pick only 19 games into his career shows just how disappointed the Bengals are with Smith's play. JC
Maybe somebody should let Andre's co-agent know that Andre should be in shape by the time he shows up to the voluntary workouts.. I mean for fucks sake, half of his paycheck depends on it. How can his agent or his fat buddy let him lose half of his paycheck every week for being out of shape. Stupid, stupid, stupid. If this guy was on a teeter-totter with bust, bust would need a ladder just to get down to the ground after Andre sat on it. Stupid wouldn't get on it because it was afraid of being flung off and falling to its death. What is even more frustrating is that he looked like he was in shape when Solomon took a tour of our facility. Marvin even made it a point to point Andre out..then he just fucking ballooned. Get with it dough-boy or your going to be out of the league here in two years.

ColorChanginClique
He's frustrating me. I'll hold out hope he turns out to be a quality starter for us...but I feel like there's gonna be a lot of people in line waiting to say "I TOLD YOU SO!" with regards to the smith pick. He's got the physical strength, he's not an imbecile, and he seems nice enough to be coachable. Maybe a light bulb goes off soon and he fights his way out of Marvin's doghouse. (Which he deserves to be in)

texbengal
I think that Marvin, Brat, and Alexander are doing all they can to send a message to Andre that it's time to get on board and push himself harder. This is a guy that was All-World at Alabama, and I'm guessing that due to his size and athletic ability there, he wasn't pushed really hard... and he could rely on his ample talent and girth and still be a dominant player. It's a different game here, and he's got to put the work in, bottom line. This "benching" was (hopefully) a big slap in the face to him, and he'll push himself. From what I've seen, the guy has talent and can play in this league, but he looks out of shape and I suspect endurance-wise, he's not there as far as his ability to play for long stretches. If you could take Roland's smarts and work ethic and put it into Smith, you'd really have something. Hope Andre realizes that he's got to step up, or his legacy will be close to that of Freddie Childress, and not the next Willie Anderson that some of us were envisioning. If nothing else, Smith offers so much more in the run game and we can get Benson on track. That will help the passing game immensely. If not Smith, even Collins is worthy of a shot. We know he can pass protect.
