anyone else notice how cedric kinda walks away like nothing happened? dude shows no emotion when anyone besides himself succeeds.

I took it as more of a look of disbelief. In fact, Ced appears to do a double take as in "did I really just see what I just saw?"

Here are some links we found about Saturday’s play of the day:

• CBSSports.com’s Josh Katzowitz: Jerome Simpson’s flip ‘came on instinct’

It was a thrill for just about everybody watching the game live — and seeing it on replay was nearly as impressive — but it was awfully cool for Simpson as well (even Washington laughed about it afterward).

One criticism, though. His left hand definitely touched the turf to keep himself upright after he completed the flip. There’s no judge in the world that would give him a perfect mark for that imperfection. Even Simpson realizes that.

Even so, Simpson’s 9 is better than most everybody else can accomplish. So, kudos to Simpson on one of the most exciting plays in the NFL this season. Let’s just hope next time, he doesn’t need a hand to steady himself.

• New York Times’ Toni Monkovic: Flop and Then Flip for a Touchdown for Jerome Simpson

Jerome Simpson’s amazing flip for a touchdown — he somersaulted over an Arizona Cardinal at the goal line and stuck the landing in the end zone — is one of the most dazzling touchdowns in N.F.L. history.

A bit of background on the Bengals’ Simpson, a wide receiver:

Before his super flip, he made a flop — similar to a soccer dive — to draw a penalty against the Browns on Nov. 27, giving an early hint that he has a special talent for flying through the air.

Sadly for Simpson, the news was not all good this season. In September, the police searched his home after they said a package containing 2.5 pounds of marijuana was delivered there. Investigators said they found six more pounds of marijuana at his home. Simpson has not been arrested and has not been suspended. The N.F.L. said it would wait until the police investigation was finished before any decision on punishment could be contemplated.

It was the most impressive touchdown dénouement we’ve seen in a very long time, though we hear that the French judge only gave Simpson a 6.0, and the IOC may have to investigate.
In all seriousness, we shouldn’t be surprised that Simpson can do this. At Coastal Carolina, Simpson was a member of the 2006 Big South Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship squad, and he earned All-Big South honors. He also set a new school record in the high jump with a leap of 2.05 meters (which he may have broken on Sunday’s touchdown).

Qualifying for the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Simpson was also on the school record 4×400-meter relay squad that set the new mark at the Big South Championships.

Put all that together, and it’s about half of the recognition Simpson will get for this catch. Oh, and a quick note to Ray Anderson and Merton Hanks at the NFL’s head offices: You can’t fine Simpson for an illegal end zone celebration, because the jump started at the two-yard line!

Bengals fans left Paul Brown Stadium Christmas Eve pretty certain that reindeer can’t fly. But they’re not too sure about Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson.
Simpson’s incredible goal-line somersault over Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington left Washington gaping at Simpson as if he were the Ghost of Christmas Past on a play that will make the highlight reels for many Christmases in the future.

• Finally, came across a story about it from Ken Millstone of CBSNews.com. Not somewhere we’re used to seeing this type of story, so we checked it out. Millstone reminds us how perennially awful the “Bungles” are (thanks), points out that this is just the third winning season for the Bengals in their past 21 (funny how some overlook that it’s also their third winning season in their past 7), proclaims that Dalton and Green have been great but neither has had the season Cam Newton has had, and describes the Simpson flip play. Which is followed by this paragraph …

The bad news for the Bengals? Running back Cederic Benson had to sit out part of the season after being suspended by the league for two misdemeanor assault charges (he spent time in jail in the offseason).

Hmmm. First of all, Cedric. And you’re technically correct if by “part of the season” you meant 1 game.

Millstone’s story wraps up with this paragraph:

But this is a team on the rise. Already loaded with young talent like Dalton, Green, and second-year tight end Jermaine Gresham, the team got a highway-robbery deal for disgruntled quarterback Carson Palmer, dealing him midseason to the desperate Raiders for a first round pick in 2012 and a second-rounder in 2013.

Sorry, Raiders fans, but Millstone already has determined that the Raiders will not be playing in the AFC title game. (Remember, if they DO, that conditional second-round pick in 2013 becomes a first-rounder.)

If you watch the longer version of the clip, Ced was walking away after setting the decisive block knowing Simpson would score. After the flip, he ran into the endzone and congradulated Jerome big time.

Marvin Lewis mentioned three times Monday that while WR Jerome Simpson's flip for a touchdown was a remarkable display of athleticism, he'd prefer other methods of entering the end zone. "You just have to be careful," Lewis said. "There’s other ways to score. It’s him and a linebacker, so just cut back and score the easy way.”

Lewis Wishes Simpson Hadn't Flipped Into End Zone

Jerome Simpson Scored Touchdown By Flipping Over Linebacker

CINCINNATI -- Jerome Simpson's touchdown flip is getting lots of play in highlight clips. His coach wishes he hadn't made such a spectacular landing in the end zone.
The Cincinnati Bengals receiver did a heels-over-head flip over an Arizona linebacker and landed on his feet during a 23-16 win on Saturday. It was the most distinctive play of Simpson's four-year career. His teammates were awed by the way he stuck the landing and raised both arms like a triumphant gymnast.
Coach Marvin Lewis said on Monday although the move was impressive, Simpson could have scored much more easily if he'd just made a cutback.
The Bengals (9-6) can clinch the final AFC wild card with a win on Sunday over Baltimore (11-4), which has a division title and home-field advantage at stake.

Jerome Simpson's flip surprised even him

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jerome Simpson's heels-over-head touchdown still has the Bengals flipped out.

The fourth-year receiver pulled off the defining play of his career on Saturday, vaulting over an Arizona linebacker and landing on his feet in the end zone during a 23-16 victory. Teammates were awed by the way he stuck the landing and raised both arms like a triumphant gymnast.

His coach? Not so thrilled.

Marvin Lewis said Monday that Simpson could have taken a much easier and less risky route to the end zone. A bad landing could have left Cincinnati (9-6) in a bad way heading into a make-or-break game.

"You just have to be careful," Lewis said. "There's other ways to score. It's him and a linebacker, so just cut back and score the easy way. For effect, it sure was big."

The play helped the Bengals build a 23-0 lead. They barely held on, securing only their third winning record in the last 21 years. A win on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium over Baltimore (11-4) would clinch the final AFC wild-card berth.

Players got the day off on Monday, required only to come in and lift weights at some point. Video monitors mounted on walls around the locker room flashed a slideshow of the weekly schedule, along with inspirational sayings.

A photo of Simpson with arms raised in the end zone flashed on the monitors Monday with the inscription: "Make The Tough Plays."

Simpson made the most fantastic one.

He got open, caught a pass and headed down the left sideline on a 19-yard play. When he reached the 2-yard line, he saw linebacker Daryl Washington headed for him, shoulder down to deliver a hit.

Instead of trying to avoid him, Simpson left his feet and tucked his head to somersault over the linebacker. Simpson landed on both feet simultaneously, crouched with the ball in his right hand. He put his left hand on the ground briefly to steady himself, then stood up and raised both arms in celebration.

The crowd of 41,273 gave its loudest ovation of the day. It got even louder when the move was replayed on the video board several times.

"To tell you the truth, it was just instinct," Simpson said. "I just saw the guy. It seemed like he was going to hit me, and I didn't want to get hit. I used my athletic ability and my jumping ability.

"I've jumped over a guy before, but never did a flip and landed it."

The landing was the most impressive part.

"I don't know what the Russian judge would've given him," Lewis said on Monday. "It was a pretty good landing. With Jerome's athleticism -- we've spoken about it many, many times. And that was another display -- a public display -- of it. He's got incredible athletic tools.

"He played very hard in this game. So I'm proud of him for how he continues to keep playing. He went in there and blocked hard. We just keep pushing him to be as consistent as he can be in all phases of the game."

The Bengals drafted Simpson in the second round in 2008 out of Coastal Carolina. He had a tough time learning coordinator Bob Bratkowski's offense and started only four games in his first three seasons.

The Bengals were enamored with Simpson's speed, big hands and ability to leap for the ball. They've seen glimpses of it in practice.

"He's not normal," left tackle Andrew Whitworth said. "The guy's got freakish talent and ability, and he gets to show it from time to time. When he locks in and puts his head down, he's going to be special."

Simpson got his chance to start regularly this season in Jay Gruden's new offense after the Bengals allowed Terrell Owens to leave as a free agent and traded Chad Ochocinco to New England. He has kept a low profile since September, when authorities said a package containing 2 pounds of marijuana was delivered to his girlfriend at his northern Kentucky home. Simpson hasn't been charged.

His performance on the field has been inconsistent. He had a season-high eight catches for 152 yards in a loss at Baltimore on Nov. 20, then a total of six catches for 67 yards in the next four games combined.

Against the Cardinals, he had five catches for 42 yards and his fourth touchdown of the season, the one with the unforgettable finish.

"I thought the landing was the best," Whitworth said. "I'm not really surprised he did it because I've seen him leap. I thought he really would just vertically jump over the guy and land it, but the flip was a nice added touch."

NOTES: The Bengals gave away cotton candy, hot dogs, hot chocolate and water to season-ticket holders who lined up for a buy-one, get-one-free ticket promotion for the Baltimore game. Cincinnati has sold out only one home game this season, when Pittsburgh brought thousands of fans. ... The Bengals lost in Baltimore 31-24 on Nov. 20 after falling behind 31-14 early in the fourth quarter. Andy Dalton threw for 373 yards, a Bengals rookie record, but also had three interceptions.

If you did not like Bengals WR Jerome Simpson's flip touchdown, well, I don't know what is wrong with you. Usually, these types of highwire acts fail miserably when attempted. And Simpson did admit that he had dreamed up the scenario of pulling off such a move previously. But he claimed that the maneuver was a spur-of-the-moment act and a perfect storm of events. "It was one of those things that just came (on) instinct," Simpson said. "I just wanted to make a play for my team and get in the endzone. It seemed like (the defender, Cardinals LB Daryl Washington) was going to hit me, and I didn't want to get hit, and I used my athletic ability and my jumping ability." Simpson is now in the unofficial Youtube 15-minute Hall of Fame, but he hopes his legacy isn't hurt by something else that hangs over his head: Authorities found a mountain of pot at his house back in September, and though Simpson has not formally been charged yet, the case is still pending. If he is charged, the NFL could get involved, and it might be Simpson's final flip for a little while.

Upon further review, Gruden stays grounded on flip

By GEOFF HOBSON

Posted 1 hour ago

The highlight of Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson’s perfect 10 somersault against the Cardinals has made it all. From Deadspin to a live SportsCenter and after Wednesday’s practice offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said he’d like to enter Simpson in an NBA dunk contest because “I would think he would have a good opportunity to win that.”

But Gruden is also a coach and therefore not a big fan of anything risky.

“I would rather have him stick his left foot in the ground and walk into the end zone. But he made it a little more exciting than I would have liked,” Gruden said. “It shows what type of athlete he is. A great athlete. Unbelievable. But I would prefer to just get the six points the easy way and walk in. I think he could have, but he saw what he saw. You can’t take that away from these guys. In the heat of the moment they see different things and when you watch film and slow-mo it and rewind it … you have to coach them up the best way you can, but when the ball is in their hands, the ball is in the quarterback’s hands, or the receivers’ hands, you have to hope they make great judgment calls.”

The Cards tape is not the first one the coaches froze to gape at Simpson’s leaping abilities. They did it when he dunked over the goal post in Seattle and when he leaped over a cameraman on the sideline against the Colts.

From Deadspin to deadpan.

“I would never coach that move,” Gruden said. “I can demonstrate it, but I would never coach it.”
